Title: GNR in Top 100 metal Cd's
Post by: hyperionmax2003 on June 13, 2005, 10:58:42 PM
In the July 2005 issue of Hit Parader they had a countdown of the
Top 100 CD's in Metal History, and GNR made the list twice:

27. Use Your Illusion 1/2
By the time the GNR gang got around to making this collection,
they (or more pointedly, vocalist Axl Rose) has grown tired of the hard
rock anthems that characterized their explosive debut.  With Illusion's
two disc's encompassing nearly three hours of music, there was something
for everybody on these two seperately- sold albums.  And while the music
did wander at times, at heart it was still pure rock and roll dynamite.
Hey, there was even a nasty shot directed in Hit Parader included in Axl
Rose's snarling tune Get in the Ring!
"That was when Axl started taking over the band", said guitarist
Slash.  "His ambition started getting in the way.  He was determined not
to do the same thing twice - even if we all knew that was what we did best."

2. Appettite For Destruction
Loud, fast and furious, from the moment of their inception in the
late 80's GNR was like a run-away freight train  rolling through town
at too fast a speed- a wreck was inevitable, but what a glorious wreck
it would be!  Like a rabid pit bull, this West Coast quintet snarled their
way onto the rock scene with AFD, one of the most engrossing debut albums
of all time.  From the raw power of WTTJ to the suprisingly sweet sentiments
expressed throughout SCOM, this is an essential "must have" for any hard rock
collection.  While the often surly, unpredictable personality of Axl Rose
occasionaly cast a distatsteful palloron some of GNR's rock and roll legacy,
with the passing of more than a decade since this disc first appeared, it's lasting brilliance
can now be fully appreciated.
"We didn't think about what we were doing that closely," said guitarist Slash.
"We just went in and did it.  We liked to play live in the studio, laying down
the track together start from finish.  If somebody messed up, we didn'tstop
the tape.... we just all statrted from the beginning.  That's what made Appettite
so special."

So, watcha all think? (Oh, and Metallica the black album was #1)

It's cool to see GN'R on the list, but if The Black Album was #1 then this list is obviously shit.  TBA is a very good album, but its Metallica's 5th best album, so it damn sure isn't the best metal album of all time.

Ha,ha agreed. But does anybody know if the following quote was an actual quote from Slash or just something the magazine made up b/c of their past "run-ins" with Axl???

Thats a matter of opinion about the black album being Metallicas 5th best album, however The Black Album when put in the perspective of music, timing, and the impact it had. Id Definately say its in the top ten metal albums ever  :peace:

I could live with top 10, but #1 no way.  A Black Sabbath album needs to be ahead of any Metallica album.  They created metal.  Also I would rank a number of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest albums over the Black Album if we're going on impact.

The Black album is great. I'll never forget the way I felt the first time I heard it. But it did NOT even come close to having the impact that AFD had on the world. GNR were an absolutely worldwide phenomenon. Shit, there was even starving kids in Africa wearing GNR shirts! AFD is number 2 only in a parallel universe.
