cool 8) Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: jameslofton29 on May 31, 2005, 07:15:04 PM Brownstone is a reference to heroin. It isn't about an apartment complex.

Post by: fieldsy on May 31, 2005, 08:04:34 PM Izzy came up with the title.
Mr Brownstone could easily be a reference to their delaer who lived in that complex? Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: blasphemer on May 31, 2005, 09:50:08 PM Man wtf, Brownstone herion is the color of brown which is packed tight which looks like a fucken stone. JEEZ. If u truly dont know what ur talkin about just dont say anything;
Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Johnny Nightrain on May 31, 2005, 10:17:30 PM I said "supposed." It's just local legend that Izzy bought and/or dealt drugs there. It could even be a double meaning. Just thought it would be interesting to show.

who the fuck knows where the name brownstone comes from...????? heroin? crack? these apartments? a dealer here? Izzy could have been referencing these buildings. I just hate it when someone presumes to know everything about something that they know nothing about, just because it is known that Brownstone was a reference to heroin for the Gunners. who's to say where Izzy got the name from. cool pics. thanks Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: fieldsy on June 01, 2005, 04:52:03 AM Man wtf,? ?Brownstone? ? ?herion is the color of brown which is packed tight which looks like a fucken stone.? JEEZ.? ? ?If u truly dont know what ur talkin about? ?just dont say anything; cute. Dont you just think it is weird that there is a complex called 'Brownstone' in the town that Izzy and Axl grew up in and they have a song called 'Mr Brownstone'? Im not saying the song is about fun times they had in the apartment but rather he got the name for the song from this place. Its obvious the song is about fucking heroin. Now do YOU know what im talking about? Also when have you heard (apart from GNR) that another sland name for heroin is 'brownSTONE'? I havent. Axl said in court that Izzy came up with the name. Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: D on June 01, 2005, 05:18:42 AM I like the double meaning, Brownstone for heroin being brown and like a stone and they bought the brownstone from an apt building called brownstone.
Axls house looks like the one I grew up in for a few years. Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Nytunz on June 01, 2005, 05:55:32 AM it was damn smal

Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Butch Français on June 01, 2005, 06:59:56 AM nice job Johnny, thanks for the pics!
the Brownstone buildings are probably the reason Izzy came up with that way of referring to heroin.. it's not like it was a trademark slang for heroin, at least not before GN'R got big (probably still isn't though ;D)! Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: badapple81 on June 01, 2005, 07:13:18 AM In Robert John's book it shows Axl in front of the trees he planted when he was younger, certainly looks like similar surroundings.
And yes Mr Brownstone is about drugs and not an apartment block, but they had to get the name 'Brownstone' from somewhere, think about it before dismissing it. Thanks for sharing : ok: Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Johnny Nightrain on June 01, 2005, 07:42:47 AM Are the pictures from that book online anywhere? I know what the other side of the house and the other houses look like. I took it from that angle as not to show off a street sign or an address or anything like that.
I was tempted to go up and ask if they knew they were living in his old house, but I didn't. I felt like a detective or something parked across the street taking the picture, which is why I only took one. Didn't Kurt Cobain's childhood home sell for a lot more than it was worth, just because it was his house? Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Jessica on June 01, 2005, 09:00:21 AM Didn't Kurt Cobain's childhood home sell for a lot more than it was worth, just because it was his house? Don't know, but his house was much bigger than this one. Actually, if you replace the wood panels by fake red brick, this little house is very similar to the one i grew up in in between 5 and 12 years old. Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Btw, about the "Mr brownstone" thing, i allways tougth it came from the heroin thing because in my country getting hight with drugs is getting stoned. And so, just like heroin is brown ( i suppose) and the song says :"We`ve be dancing with Mr. Brownstone, he`s been knocking, he won`t leave me alone", i though that it was only about drugs ans had nothing to do with some building or what!! Rock on : ok: Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Maybey someone who lived in that building used to knock on Izzy's door looking for drug money and wouldn't leave poor Izzy alone.... :rofl::smoking: Izzy? :smoking: Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Mateoson on June 01, 2005, 02:21:21 PM Well being from Lafayette, I can tell you that the locals believe they are talking about this particular apartment building which is called "Brownstone". Also legend has it that they used to party hard over there. So maybe they were doing a little brown stone at Brownstone.
Next time I'm in Lafayette I'll snap a pic of Izzy's house he just sold. Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: AxlStaleyWeiland on June 01, 2005, 03:04:16 PM Mr Brownstone is heroin. In LA, as well as most of southwest USA most of the heroin comes from Mexico and is a black tarlike type of heroin, instead of the white or brown powder heroin found in midwest or east coast USA or Europe., plus the lyrics obviously show its about heroin not apartments or crack or whatevever. "used to do a little but a little wouldnt do it so a litttle got more and more" " stuck it in the middle shot it in the middle, should have known better.... Id leave it all behind" BTW i thought Smells like teen spirit did come from the deoedeant in some way, like Kurt Cobain used to fyuck a chick who wore teen spirit and after they fucked everyone would say kurt smells like teen spirit, Im not sure that the lyrics of the song really have any connection to that, I just thought thats where the title came from

Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: RustyCage on June 01, 2005, 05:31:26 PM Mr. Brownstone is a heroin dealer that supplied the band. I remember once seeing him on a talk show where he said "he had supplied a now big rock band in L.A. but won't name who they are and that they wrote a song about him". He called himself Mr. Brownstone. Twas either Maury or Sally show. Not sure because it was a while back.
Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Freya on June 01, 2005, 06:55:02 PM Quote "he had supplied a now big rock band in L.A. but won't name who they are and that they wrote a song about him". More likely to be "Dr. Feelgood". Of course Mr. Brownstone is about heroin, but it doesn't mean that the old apartment block didn't give Izzy the idea to call it that for his song. Thanks to Johnny Nightrain for posting this. So much of early GnR had to do with where they came from, it's nice to see their place of origin. And perhaps especially poignant considering with what Axl says went on in that house. Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Johnny Nightrain on June 01, 2005, 08:05:34 PM Yeah, a lot does have to do with where they came from. Like, jumping into the river too many times to make it home. The Wabash is a big river that runs right through the city and was probably the inspiration for that line. "Paradise City" is supposed to be about Lafayette, too. I think Axl said it was him going back and forth between here and L.A. And the lyrics "out back on the highway, on 65" is a reference to I-65 which is the major highway that runs just outside of town. Though, I swear it says I-65 in the song, not "on 65."

Axl compared Indiana to Auschwitz. /jarmo Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: Johnny Nightrain on June 01, 2005, 10:43:37 PM Izzy said this about "Mr. Brownstone" in Hit Parader in 1988:
"It can mean a million different things to a million different people. It's like when you listen to a Zeppelin song, what do you think? I have all kinds of fucking wild ideas about what "Custard Pie" is about." Axl said this about "Paradise City" in Hit Parader in 1988: "The verses are more about being in the jungle; the chorus is like being back in the Midwest or somewhere. It reminds me of when I was a little kid and just looked up at the blue sky and went "Wow, what is all that, it's so big out there." Everything was more innocent. There are parts of the song that have more of a down home feel. And when I started putting the overlayers on the vocals (I put five tracks on there), it seemed that it came out like some Irish or Scottish heritage." Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? Post by: jarmo on June 02, 2005, 07:53:32 AM Ok, I thought you meant Paradise City, the title, is a reference to Lafayette. Like with the Brownstone reference.
But if you mean the song is about living in a place like Lafayette and wanting to get out of there, then I can understand it. /jarmo Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? I don't know why I'm arguing this, but why would he call himself Mr. Brownstone and not name the band? And the lyrics of the song suggest not an actual person but the spector of addiction itself. And N.I.B., I'm quite certain they didn't do heroin until they went to L.A. Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up? All that's needed is for the truck to be a bit more banged up (and the house), and there to be random beer cans flung everywhere! :rofl: Oh, and an old guy with a bigass beard and a rifle sitting outside in a rocking chair wearing a beer hat and old dungarees with a mangy dog sitting next to him!(http://img127.echo.cx/img127/1221/dsc020070ii.jpg) bonus picture: The Brownstone Apartments, supposedly the inspiration for Mr. Brownstone. Plus it was also probably the brown rocks kind too, just to have the whole triple coincidence thing! Title: Re: Psssst...wanna see where Axl grew up?
