Title: A Loophole for CD?
Post by: jameslofton29 on May 21, 2005, 05:41:18 PM
I just thought of a way Axl could release some new material without being judged like he's gonna be when a full length album comes out. Do any of you guys shop at Best Buy? Alot of albums they sell will have a bonus disc with the album. I'll use Contraband as an example. I finally bought Contraband last Christmas, and when I went to Best Buy to get it, it had a bonus disc that had a few lame covers on it. Maybe this Christmas, Axl/Geffen/Interscope could do something similar. You go into the store, look at the GNR section, and when you see the Greatest Hits cd, you are shocked that another disc has been added to the package. On closer look, you see that it is a CD sampler of the upcoming album. Maybe 3 or 4 songs. This is a brilliant idea. And to make it even more brilliant, dont promote it at all. Let it be a juicy nugget for the core fanbase to discover. And since it would be a cd sampler and wouldn't qualify as a legitimate release, it would fly underneath the media's radar.

What makes this incredibly original marketing idea dumb?

maybe something like that would have been cool years back with live or studio performance of the tracks we have already heard, but now I don't want teaser bullshit or re released songs that have been played to death and talked about 24-7 online.. Let me go to the gnr section adn see cd and be done with it,..

But wouldn't something be better than nothing? I think its a great idea. With everyone's all or nothing attitude approach to this album, going against the grain would be right up Axl's alley.

who's he going to impress the forum fans that make up like a percentage point of gnr fans.. it's been so many years there's no reason for this type of promo, and who wuill be looking at ghs to look for a bonus cd..?

Mike, thats what makes the idea so brilliant. You're just casually looking through cds, go to the GNR section, and stumble upon a miniature goldmine! Everyone thinks its a shitty idea, but I guarantee if this were to happen, the GNR boards would crash from the surge of activity.

The GNR boards crash when a badly recorded IRS leaked a year plus after the fact, it doesn't take much...

the irs clip is scary, maybe the people here shouldn't be allowed a lot of music at once.. They all came and wet themselves over a 32 second blurry audio clip.. A entire album release and axl may get sued for heart attacks

32 seconds ? it's 3 minutes and 39 seconds.

Actually, not alot of people "came and wet themselves."  If I remember correctly, at first, the majority thought it was fake.  (IRS that is)

I can't think of a better "bonus" in the GNR world, than the release of Chinese Democracy itself.  It definitely won't sell itself to the regular public, so yes, there will have to be intelligent marketing, something that will get folks to buy it rather than d-l it illegally....it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.  The marketing will have to be strong to overcome the overwhelming negative sentiment I hear from "radio-land" whenever New GNR is mentioned.  Just this morning around 9am on WYSP, Philadelphia's rock station just played YCBM, and mentioned after the song, "Don't laugh, new stuff from GNR is expected by Christmas."  Sometimes I think we're all a bunch of masochists.   :'(

I want all or nothing

the time CD comes out im gonna be burnt out on Madagascar,The Blues,CD,and IRS.

if there are 12 songs and these 4 are on there, thats 33 percent of the record we've heard.

I want to be surprised.

Yeah, you'll think its retarded, until it occurs. Then you'll be in love with the idea.

wouldn;t be better to just release an ep with songs we have already head?

Then the album could come out with songs on it that we haven't heard.

its a good idea but i hate it! it would jus be a a way to postpone the actual cd even longer which would be even more annoyin for us fans

I think if we have to wait another 2 or 3 years, the idea I mentioned earlier should be taken into consideration.

if we had to wait another 2-3 years this band would break up, or someone would leave..

Mike, someone is probably going to leave anyways. I would say by year's end. The band cant stay in limbo forever. At some point, someone will get fed up. I highly doubt it would be Tommy. He's been around the longest and supposedly has played a big part in the making of CD. I always thought Robin might be next, but he's kind of in the same situation as Tommy. Probably a more minor player like Chris or Brain. But of course, this is just speculation. LMAO!!

How many people buy music online anyway? Not so many. :P

More than 100 million songs have been legally downloaded from the iTunes Music Store alone.

In the grand scheme of things, legally bought online music accounts for roughly 2-3% of record sales. Not a lot in the big picture but considering the medium is only a few years old and only getting bigger, it is impressive.

Secretly putting a sampler disc with a GH release that was released so long ago makes
zero sense.
I actually thought when they first released the GH CD, that having a 1-track bonus CD featuring a new song from Chinese Democracy would make sense (if they were actually planning on releasing CD within 6 months of the Greatest Hits CD).
Just something to tell music fans, here's the greatest hits CD of the band you know as GnR, and here is a 1-track bonus CD of a track from the long-awaited comeback album, due out next Spring, bla bla bla..
Sadly, they knew then that the CD was still miles from being completed.

The only thing that could hold me over until CD is perhaps a dvd of the MSG show perhaps in dolby 5.1. But seriously as D said, its all or nothing..on with round 2.
