I've just seen the first 17 episodes of a new series in Japan called 'Bleach'.  It's a really good story, definately some of the best anime i've seen recently.  The fighting (because, of course, there is fighting) is kinda similar to DragonballZ, but the feel of the show really reminds me of FF7 and Akira.  It is getting extremely popular very fast, but we won't be getting a UK release for a while because, y'know, we're the UK.  If any of you are into your anime though, I would seriously recommend getting some subtitled discs off ebay for ?8 - it'd be well worth it.

Other than that, i'm also really enjoying another series called 'Cowboy Beebop' right now.  That's got a really different feel to it, but it's so damn cool and stylish, as well as being really, really funny.  Again, if bounty hunters in space is your thing then i'd really recommend trying it out.  The series is quite expensive but there is a film as well which is very good (and cheap on play.com) so, yeah, i'd recommend that someone check that out.

Anyone got a favourite show/film that they wanna recommend?  I'm always looking for new stuff.

Spirited Away and  Princess Mononoke are pretty good. I would also recommend Grave of the Fireflies .

Ha, a few years back my friend went crazy and started buying Cowboy Bebop DVDs off the internet, I find that memory funny for some reason

I've read my fair share of manga, I never really "got into" the whole anime thing though

Cowboy Beebop is great.  It has a very rock n' roll attitude to it.

I recommend 'Hellsing'.  It's about a vampire, but I assure you it's not cheesy.  It's one of the best animes I've ever seen.


I also like 'Noir' - a dark series about two women, and it's unusual as the story is set in France. 


hmm, for light-hearted stuff, 'Love Hina' is a good, fluffy anime.

Tim, I love Mononoke - it's one of my all time favourites.  'Grave of the Fireflies' is the most unbearably sad thing i've seen since 'My Girl'.


I've seen trailers for that, it looks pretty class.  Have you seen 'Blood The Last Vampire' or 'Vampire Hunter D'?  Those are both dead popular, although I thought Blood was a bit too short.

What is 'Mononoke'?  does it have your typical 1 guy and like 43 girls with multi-colored hair?  I watched one like that a while ago, cant remember its name.  But all the girls would turn into some kind of pet animal.  really weird.


What do you guys think of Evangelion?  I liked the overall storyline and those giant mechas, BUT the main character really bugged me.  I kept wanting to reach out to my monitor and slap him silly.  The coolest character is that girl who had 3 lives - I think her name was Rei.  I wish there was a spinoff series about her.

Of course!  I used to love Dragon Ball and DBZ!  Gundam Wing is a good one too.  They got pretty popular here a few years ago, but I kinda quit watching them... 

I quite like Gravitation... I always liked DBZ and Gundam Wing... and uh... I went through a phase of liking Sailor Moon... :hihi:

I like Evangelion but I also think it's overrated.? People go crazy over it when there's much better shows out there, although I guess a lot of them wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Eva's influence.? Full Metal Panic is a very similar idea but a lot funnier.

Also here's a class show that a lot of you might like.? It's called FLCL (or Furikuri), it's only 6 episodes long and is really cool and surreal, but with a really intelligent theme hidden in there somewhere.? The first time I saw it I thought it was random fun but it's a lot smarter than that.? Really entertaining.? The first ep only comes in 3 parts on youtube, so here they are:

watched 120 episodes straight for naruto then i got sick of it.

For the manga part of this I recommend Abenobashi... my friend got me into it, its really quite funny and an uplifting read.

What's so great about anime?

For me the artwork.... and a lot of the time the plotlines are very good.... (course that isn't all the time...), but you've gotta be quite imaginative to come up with some of the stuff that those writers come up with... obviously that doesn't go for all of the stuff, some of it is complete shit! :hihi:

Bleach rocks. I'm on episode 87 (they've made 97 I think) and it's currently on a filler arc (meaning episodes to pass time so that the manga can get a ahead)

Though I must say the fillers are downright awesome!

Nice to see this thread is still breathing.  I saw a film called Whispers of the Heart the other day and it was fantastic.  I dunno if that many people here would like it, it's all very "heartwarming" and the ending is terrible but for the most part I loved it.

I really don't get it. It looks like the guys who make the animation for anime movies don't want to use too much paper..  I don't remember the name of the movie, but there's this little girl whos parents turn into pigs so she starts to work in a japanese spa or something.. well that's actually a good movie, but that's the only one I like so far. Rest of them.. :-X

That's Spirited Away, a Mityazaki film.  Damn good but not one of his best - grab a copy of Princess Mononoke and we'll talk.

Yeah I read a bit of the manga for this - i'm kind of rooting for Light as well.  I'd probably bury a book like that if I found it, or lock it up and throw away the key.  Still, it'd be awfully tempting to use that book for evil, even if it meant sacraficing your soul in the process.  It's a clever idea - I hope the story doesn't trail off over the series.

^^  It looks like Death Note is starting to lose some steam.  But the first 12 episodes or so kept me on the edge of my seat!  I want to read the manga now too.

I love the Ninja Scroll anime film.  The series I didn't dig so much.  Maybe the mangas are really good - I dunno.  Try to watch the film though cause it's brill! :love:
