Title: Anthrax & GN'R comparison...
Post by: metallex78 on May 11, 2005, 06:37:53 AM
I know some of you might be thinking "what the hell?!?!" from the title of this topic, but I don't think it's that strange.

Let me explain.

Two very different bands, yes I know, but they're lineup situations are pretty similar.

Firstly, as we know, the original lineup of GN'R went their separate ways, leaving 2 original members (Axl, and Dizzy is kind of an original member) and were replaced with new members with an intention to update their sound, although we're yet to hear any of that, apart from what's been played live of course.

And Anthrax, who had a bit of success in the 80's with the original lineup, changed in the early 90's (also I assume to update their sound) to a new vocalist (John Bush) and guitarist and were left with only two original members (Scott Ian and Charlie Benante). The main difference is that this new lineup of Anthrax released 4 albums of new material, to some success, whereas nuGN'R haven't released any.

And there are similar arguments amongst Anthrax fans as to which lineup is better, old or new, much like nuGN'R vs old GN'R.

And to make things stranger, the original 80's lineup of Anthrax have gotten back together again recently for some reunion shows, again leaving Anthrax fans on either side of the fence.

Me, I'm a new Anthrax fan, I much prefer John Bush singing, to the hair metal screaming of Joey Belladonna, and I prefer their newer albums to the 80's stuff. But I'm still gonna see them live when they play in Sydney this coming weekend.

So there's a kind of a comparison to go by as whether or not the nuGN'R lineup might be successful or not with different members, and what fans prefer, old or new.

Just something to consider.

i just hope that Anthrax are doing this for the right reasons, John Bush n' co. are pretty much left in the fuckin' dark.

I'll be seein' them in Brizzy!!

I guess with the grunge wave n' all that bullshit in the 90's that fucked up alot of bands, the same would of happend to GNR too.

Yeah, I hope John Bush comes back too, but I think he's spending some time with his wife and new baby who was born not long ago.
Charlie and Scott have already mentioned that John and Rob are still very much part of Anthrax, so let's hope they keep true to their word. And I really loved John Bush singing the old stuff on the Greater Of Two Evils album, to me it sounds much much better than Joey.

Anyway, as for their reasons for this "reunion" tour, the last time Anthrax played here (in 2004) they sold out two Sydney shows and now it doesn't even look like they can sell out one show!
So if they really are doing this tour for the money, it doesn't seem to be working...

I'm still looking forward to the gig this saturday night, I'm sure they'll be good.

Their old stuff is easily better than their sellout era.

Sellout era?

What exactly did they sell out?

Anthrax became useless after Persistence of Time, their last album worth getting. John Bush should have stayed in Armored Saint.

Thats all good an fine if you feel that way, but you still haven't explained how exactly they sold out.

Speaking of Anthrax, are any other Sydney-siders going to see them tomorrow night?

I?m really sad for Johm Bush and Rob Caggiano..hreat musicians..great singer. I also like Bush better on vocals. I must say two things: first, this is not the "original" Anthrax reuniting...a reunion of the original members would have Neil Turbin(original singer) on board. Second, a comparison between GnR and Anthrax is too out there.

Yeah, I know it's not the very original Anthrax lineup, but the most popular and successful Anthrax, like when people refer to the "original GN'R" they're not talking about Tracii Guns or Rob Gardener are they? They mention Axl, Izzy, Slash, Duff, Steven.

Anyway, like I said, I'm comparing that both bands have had lineup changes, not their music.
