Title: Estranged in concerts
Post by: neko on May 01, 2005, 02:42:11 PM
i think this is one of the best GNR-Axl songs they have made , and i think Axl really put his feelings into this song , but i find it funny that in the concerts it seems that he didnt like the song , or doesnt agree with it that much , he says numerous times things about this being a happy song and a little bit cheesy (it sound to me like that by the way he presented the song). maybe in the concert with all that energy he doesnt feels like playing it . is it just me or anyone feels the same way?

I think he loved that song, that happy comment was him being sarcastic I believe.

I used to really like the song, but it's a little too overblown for me - Axl and Co. have done better work musically and lyrically in songs like Breakdown and Locomotive.

As for Axl mocking the song in concerts... he was being sarcastic I believe. On Live Era he prefaces the tune by saying "This is a nice, happy song," so I think he was just kidding around.

plus he adds something about being great to commit hara-kiri ;D

The intro.'s Axl being sarcastic.  It's a beautiful song both lyrically and musically, but it is mega-emotional, and a bit depressing...compared to Locomotive and Breakdown???  both very good songs...but compared to Estranged???  Not even close.  It could possibly be, no, in fact, it is, one of the greatest songs ever written.  Just my 2 cents.

I absolutely love Estranged, but for me the song doesnt work as well at concert as is does on the cd. Some people may make an argument that most songs are like that, but i disagree. But like at the Tokyo 92 show for instance, it just seemed rushed and unemotional. I dont know if that explains it very well, but its just missing the same kind of power that the cd version conveys. Either way, its still a great song!

Estranged is underated. I guess because it's a long-length song.
I believe lyrically is better than November Rain.
If you check the lyrics of songs like Estranged, you'll notice that Estranged is the only song that doesn't let you missery. You may say that listening to sad, blues songs makes you wanna cry or even jump from a window, but Estranged is the only song that restores you.
I know a guy that this song saved his life or something.
I don't think we'll ever hear it again live though. Madagascar (lyrically) is the sequence in the old trilogy.

It  reminds me of "a perfect day for Bananafish" by J D Salinger.

The main character Seymour Glass said "It's a perfect day for Bananafish" and later pulled the trigger on his honeymoon.

Bananafish, according to Seymour, swim into holes where there are bananas and stuff themselves on them, sometimes eating as many as seventy-eight at a time. This makes them so fat, naturally, that they cannot get out of the hole, and they die there.

Doesn't it mean suicide in Japanese?

And about Estranged live... It sounds WAY too empty with just Slash playing guitar on it on Live Era.

I can't hear much other guitar work on the cd tho??

Hara kiri is a way of commiting suicide by taking your bowels with a knife (sorry to be so explicit) ;D

Right, you can also say "seppuku" in Japanese for the same expression. It literally means "cutting the stomach". It's basically a form of ritual suicide from feudal times in Japan that was mainly used by Samurais. It's pretty gruesome, but to sum it up, the person who committed seppuku (or hara-kiri) slashed his abdomen with a knife or sword, first left to right then bottom to top.

So yeah, Axl was ironic when he talked about Estranged as a "happy song".

Edit: damn Jenny you were faster!

I LOVE Estranged, and I always listen to it whenever I feel shittified because it cheers me up again. I don't know why though... maybe its just because its Gn'R, or because its a beautiful song.... or maybe its because each part rips through me like that chilli sauce from the kebab van... (there's a kebab van near where my boyfriend lives, and when he gets one from there, he always has chilli sauce, and it always makes him need the restroom an hour after eating! I tried it once, and man... that stuff is HOT!)...
anyway, I wish Axl would play Estranged again... maybe an acoustic version... that would rule! Or even a really fast electric version. That would rule too! Don't get me wrong, I love the way it is already, and I wouldn't change it for the world, but hearing it performed different a couple of times would be interesting!
Hehehe... harakiri...
Jenny, the way you explained it, I led myself to believe it meant killing yourself by shoving a knife up your ass! Then I realized that wouldn't actually kill anyone, it would just hurt a LOT!

LOL It's just that English is not my mother tongue, so I described it the best I could at that time :)

That's OK, just I thought it was a funny thought, so I had to post it! :D Hehehe... can you imagine anyone actually DOING that!?? Shoving a knife up their ass.... jeeeeeeeez that's gotta hurt!!!!

yeah, in the studio version you can also hear izzy's distorted rhythm guitar throughout the song.  but on the live era version you can only hear slash's guitar.  whatever, i still think it's amazing live.  i remember having my doubts before hearing the live version, but afterward i was very impressed.  slash nailed those bends perfectly.

Yes. The American-English literal translation is "tummy tuck".

In most cases it was a virtual death sentence. So I hear.
