Title: Stained Class
Post by: Walk on April 29, 2005, 03:54:55 PM
Is this the album that started speed metal? Or did Motorhead get the ball rolling by fusing punk rock with metal? Halford or Lemmy? (ok, that's an impossible one to answer!)

I think Lemmy should get credit for kicking metal in the ass in the late 70's when Sabbath, Purple, and Zeppelin were declining. Judas Priest helped keep metal alive too, but I think Motorhead has been more important in terms of influence. Even some early "black metal" bands like Venom have some Motorhead worship going on.

However, I'll say Stained Class is a better album than any Motorhead album. And no, there are no suicide messages in there! ;)

Stained Class is awesome

...however the production is absolute shit and makes the songs sound kind of weak when they should sound metal.

It could be an amazing album if it had that "Painkiller" sort of guitar tone.

Do you have the remaster or origional, because i have the origional and the sound quality is poor.

The remaster sounds a little better. The Sad Wings of Destiny remaster is good, too. These are rare examples of albums that sound better remastered on CD than vinyl, because the original production was so poor. That's why they're so great live.

I think the drums sound too tame, but the guitars sound fine. Halford holds back too often, too.

well its a great album even with the poor production

Have you heard Halford's live version of the title track from his live CD with his solo band?

it kicks ass!

...well i wont put the remaster too high on my to-buy-list, but i would like to know what you think of the bonus track which i believe is fire burns below?

The bonus track is mediocre. I wouldn't get it if you already have it. The only really good unreleased track Judas Priest have is Heart of a Lion, which you have to buy Metalogy to get! Most people should just try some "alternatives" to purchasing music to hear the bonus tracks, because they aren't worth buying the album again for.

Judas Priest pionnered the twin guitar attack but i think Motorhead with songs like Ace of Spades started what most people would consider real speed metal.

Bathory is black metal, period. I put Venom in ""s because they don't have the sound down perfectly, kind of how early Slayer can be considered black metal, but thrash is more appropriate.
