Title: If Could of Chosen The Covers To Go TSI...
Post by: Dave_Rose on April 22, 2005, 08:03:58 AM
The title says it all what covers what you choose I dont believe this has been discussed before you can keep remaining tracks as well on there. I know the theme was meant to be punk rock cover but lets not do that here.

Only Women Bleed
Tie Your Mother Down
Dead Flowers
Heartbreak Hotel
Sail Away Sweet Sister
I Was Only Joking

I think if GNR would of done Mountains "Mississippi Queen" It would have been awesome.? By the way, Ozzy sucked at his rendition of that song.

I know that this song was not released at the time but a perfect song for Axl to cover would be Paperbag by Fiona Apple.  I have read that he is a fan of hers and has been seen at some of her past shows.    The closing of the song is as follows:

And I went crazy again today
Looking for a strand to climb
Looking for a little hope
Baby said that she couldn't stay
Wouldn't put her lips to mine
And a fail to kiss is a fail to cope
I said honey I don't feel so good
Don't feel justified
C'mon put a little love in my void
She said it's all in your head
I said so is everything but she didn't get it

I changed the he's to she's and all the craziness talk is relevent.  Do you guys know this tune?

The title says it all

Then perhaps you should have been a bit more careful in typing it  :hihi:

But anyway, there should have been a good Stones tune on there. Maybe "Some Girls" or something.

Something like this:

Bucket O' Trouble
Anarchy in the UK
Dancing in the Moonlight
Rock the Casbah
Cocaine
Stairway to Heaven
Incense and Peppermints (If they could pull it off without sounding...well...hippy :hihi:)
Bad Penny
Piece of Me
Shuffle It All
Whiskey in the Jar
Love Will Tear Us Apart

I've always thought they would've done a kick ass version of Heart's Barracuda if they'd of thought of it. Seems like it was right up their alley.

Well if I could have chosen covers for TSI I might have put the Immigrant Song on there somewhere.

some off the beaten path choices:

"Sister Anne" or "Kick Out the Jams" by the MC5
"Ace of Spades" by Motorhead
"TV Eye" by the Stooges
"Who Will Save Rock N' Roll" by The Dictators
"Borstal Boys" by The Faces
"Gimmee Back My Bullets" by Skynyrd
"Highway Star" by Deep Purple

As for a Lies Acoustic/It's Alright vibe, Axl solo:

"Brass Buttons" or "In My Hour of Darkness" by Gram Parsons
"Thirteen" by Big Star
"I Want You" by Dylan

Piece of my Heart by Janis Joplin would've been cool...

along with:
All of My Love-Led Zeppelin
Sweet Emotion-Aerosmith
A studio version of Wild Horses
Billion Dollar Babies-Alice Cooper
Living After Midnight-Judas Priest

It would be pretty fucking sweet if they did a cover of Man in the Box by Alice in Chains as well

Anything by Heart or Zeppelin would fit Axl`s vocal style pretty naturally. Maybe an Aerosmith song or two?

I would love to hear Axl cover "Seasons In The Abyss" by Slayer and "Cars" by Gary Numan.

I literally jizzed myself when I first heard Axl screaming the chorus to Hair Of The Dog, so there's not much more I could have wanted from TSI.? But if I had to choose any others:

The Beatles' "Blackbird"

Sex Pistols' "Substitute"

The Animals' "House Of The Rising Sun"

Janis Joplin's "Crybaby"

Even though I can appreciate The Spaghtetti Incident, if it were up to me, I would have prefered GN'R never did the album.

Covers are fine now and again, like during a concert perhaps, but not actually recording them.  Not an entire record anyway.

You should be slapped with a wet fish for suggesting that GN'R cover a poison song.

Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody
The Rolling Stones: Jumpin' Jack Flash
Alice Cooper: Only Women Bleed
The Rolling Stones: Wild Horses
Aerosmith: Train Kept A Rollin' (even though this isn't an original Aerosmith song)
Queen: Tie Your Mother Down
Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven (they played parts of this acoustically in '93)
The Eagles: Hotel California
The Rolling Stones: Dead Flowers (studio, the one on Gilby's record is not very good)
AC/DC: Whole Lotta Rosie (studio, the live version by Gn'r is awesome)
Pink Floyd: Mother (whole version)
Black Sabbath: It's Alright (studio version with Axl on piano, like on Live Era)
Todd Rundgren: Dust in the Wind (studio with Axl on piano)
Not that the covers on TSI are bad, and I would actually take many of the covers on TSI over some of these, but these would be some good covers.

I'd like them to do cover versions that would really surprise me like when Metallica covered the Bob Seger song.

$1,000 Wedding by  Gram Parsons
Man Of The World by Fleetwood Mac
Truckin' by The Grateful Dead
In The Ghetto by Elvis
Mother by Pink Floyd
Run Through The Jungle by CCR

Cover versions of Led Zeppelin songs would be cool but it would hardly be a stretch for Axl to sound like Robert Plant.

Sabba Cadabra (Sabbath)
Dream On (AeroSmith)
Rock n' Roll (Zepplin)
Paint it Black (Stones) <----- This would sound great with Izzy's voice
Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
I Cant Get No Satisfaction (The Stones again)
My Generation (The Who)
Break On Through (The Doors)
Walk This Way (The Original) (Aerosmith)
Poison (Alice Cooper)
Smoke On The Water (Deep Purple)
Holiday In The Sun (Sex Pistols)
All Of my love (Zepplin)

Thats pretty much all I could think of for now, but I tried to put a little bit of everything.  :peace:

Title: Re: If Could of Chosen The Covers To Go TSI...

1. No More No More, Aerosmith
2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Black Sabbath
3. Skulls, Misfits
4. Whole Lotta Rosie, AC/DC
5. Fighting My Way Back, Thin Lizzy
6. Killed By Death, Motorhead
7. Immigrant Song, Led Zeppelin
8. Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen
9. Helter Skelter, Beatles
10. We're A Happy Family, Ramones
11. Gimme Back My Bullets, Lynyrd Skynyrd
12. Poison, Alice Cooper

There's a hundred others, but I think this tracklisting has a bit more variety than that of TSI.  Also this incorporates more of GN'R's classic rock influences.  I think they sound better covering classic rock songs than the do punk ones.

Post by: jameslofton29 on May 02, 2005, 04:08:51 PM
Sorry Rob, but U2 did the best version of Helter Skelter, and Axl probably knows he couldn't top it. If Axl did a beatles cover, it should be a song that no one else has tried to cover, like "Get Back". Your other song choices are pretty good. I'd like to see Axl try the Elastica song "Line Up". That song has a GNR vibe going. If I had never heard that song, and just seen the lyrics to it, I would think it was something written by Axl and Izzy. Something else Axl could try is "Wishing Well" by Terence Trent D'arby. Now THAT would be interesting!

Title: Re: If Could of Chosen The Covers To Go TSI...
Post by: Rob on May 02, 2005, 07:58:08 PM
I've never heard U2's version of Helter Skelter.  I've heard Aerosmith's and Motley Crue's and I think they're both very good.  However, I'm sure Guns could top U2's if they tried.  The reason I went with Helter Skelter is because its a heavier song that would fit Guns style more.  But yeah, it probably would be cooler to hear them do a song no one else has covered yet.

Rob, you've never heard U2 sing Helter Skelter? DAMN, you've got to check it out! Its on Rattle and Hum. Its Live but extremely intense. no one could possibly do that song any better. Another song I'd like to hear Axl do is "My My Hey Hey" by Neil Young. That song makes me cry. I can't even imagine the impact od Axl singing it.

AC/DC - High Voltage

Rockin' track, and it'd suit both Slash's playing and Axl's crazy-ass "Jungle" voice. This song's chorus is the sonic equivalent of being kicked repeatedly in the crotch by a jackbooted gentleman named Jurgen.

High voltage rock 'n' roll!
High voltage rock 'n' roll!
It's High voltage,
High voltage,
High voltage rock 'n' roll!

Led Zeppelin - Gallows Pole

Doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Would make a cool 'Lies' style acoustic type-thing.

The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses

Cuz, well y'know... Gilby does it so well and all...

You know Axl's voice is so under rated when your thinking about how his voice would sound on certain songs - it works on almost every song you think of -  incredible voice.  Just a shame he has been away for so long.

Anyway My top choices would be:

(Either) Cracked Actor or Suffragette City  - Bowie

Pale Blue Eyes - Velvet Underground

Dont let me down - The Beatles

And just out of morbid curiositylol    Crazy Horses - The Osmonds

ummm...since it was a punk album...i would have used

1. so alone- johnny thunders: (better song the ycpyaaam) and i could see Axl adding something to it.

2. let's have a war- fear: although i think it would be a challenge, the A Perfect Circle version sucks, if TSI were coming out now it would be timely .

3. working class hero- john lennon: this song is not punk, but it is a song i love and one axl would fit into as a singer, i'd love to see what he could do with it.

haha SIDHY wasnt a punk song!

1) Sex Pistols- Anarchy in the UK
2) Black Flag- Wasted (Duff on vocals probably)
3) L7- Shitlist
4) Soundgarden- The Day I Tried to Live (haha it wasnt even out when TSI was released, but oh well)
5) The Fangs (I think that is their name)- The Money Will Roll Right In
