Title: Rhiad...How many version of this song you`ve heard?
Post by: dENIS on March 16, 2005, 10:09:18 AM
How many times GN`R played it live? I really like this song. I like it a lot when i hear it in Las Vegas show and after in Pukkelpop festival. It`s really rock - in the end is the best part - so energy in there - something like Korn, Limp Bizkit and Nirvana both playing together. Really love it.

So not in RiR? I haven't heard the detroit version yet.
Yeah, Riyadh is prophetic of the earth shuttering new sounds, I reckon.

I love Rhiad. Exept this little 10 seconds keyboard intro, I think this is a very powerfull song. Dockland'02 video version is GREAT. I see a lot of potencial in its studio version. I doubt it will be on CD (but who knows?) but I hope We will see it as a very good B-Side.?If I were Axl I would just change the guitar solo a little bit because BH shreds on it and it's not very nice to hear. I would ask him to play it in a more "conventional" way, without shredding. Exept these 2 little details, I love it.

HELL NO ! conventional? to make it sound more accessible ? aka commercial ? aka play to pleaze instead of playing to fulfill your rocking needs and vibrations ? HELL NO !!
the hell with the bluesy shit old slash plays, that's been done over and over again for the past century...
IT'S TIME FOR SOME NEW and SERIOUS ATARI SHIT !? : ok:

shame buckethead left.... bumblefoot would've been a great replacement too.
that's what I like about the new gnr, the music is not for the radio.

the best version of rhiad I've heard is the one from las vegas 01-01-01? HOB

I like the detroit version the best....Not for quality of the recording, but the solo sounds better, and the whole song sound more raw. :smoking:

This song sucks in all its versions!! The music sounds good but its a song that Axl just cannot sing live. I don't know how anyone can possibly like how he sings it. His voice sounds like fingernails on a chalk board.  He might redeem it in the studio, but if he doesn't,I would advise leaving it off CD.

are you nuts ??? axl totally nails rhiad.

and that "fingernails on a chalk board" sound that you speak off... (might as well say cat in a blender vocals)

IS THE BEST SOUND EVER !!!

I wasn't impressed with it live in Detroit, however I think a studio version will be great.

Rhiads a great song, took a little getting used to, but of all the newbies (excluding OMG which I still love) it gave me the best feeling yet about the new musical avenues Axl seems to be exlporing. I only had one copy on my mp3 before some arsehole stole it...can anyone recommend the best version? Its the kind of song that still keeps me waiting, all these years for Axl's new album.

I agree, it'll be fantastic once he's finished in the studio with it. And if its one of the 'B-List' tracks, lord only knows whats on the A-List.

No, just to make it sound better. That's as simple as that. I do think a more normal (conventional) guitar solo would improve the song a lot and would contribute to make it sound even better. More generally, I think shredding is not really the best thing to represent what GN'R is about. Guns N' Roses has always been into melodies, not shreds. It's a whole different conception of music. Buckethead is enought talented to adapt. 8)

for me it wasn't madagascar that convinced me of the potential of this whole thing, it was riyadh.

it's so good

the vegas version is great, but it's a little slower than how they did it on the 02 tour, i like them both, i agree with a different solo but not necessarily a slow one, i think this song has one of the best choruses ever

Title: Re: Rhiad...How many version of this song you`ve heard?

not especially a slow one, but just a slower one would be perfect? :P
Everybody knows Buckethead can play 10.000 notes per seconds, it's not necessary to show it everytime he makes a guitar solo. Ok, we know it.? Let's work on the guitar melody instead, to make this solo the best possible, the most melodious one. The greatest guitarists ever are not those who show their ability to shred like speedy gonzales, but those who show their talent to write great guitar melodies :peace:

Informed fans of Buckethead know that not only can he play those 10,000 notes per second and melt your face but he can also play 3 simple notes and melt your heart.  : ok:

Ok, let me correct some things:

Rhiad was only played on Vegas 2001, Osaka, Tokyo, Pukkelpop, Docklands and Detroit. They didn't played Rhiad on the other Vegas shows. He played OMG (and the 12/31/2001 was the last time they played OMG).

I have all of them, but there's no soundboard version. The better one is the Osaka mix, made by some fan with the Bootleg and the Axl's Monitor Mix.

I made a Rhiad video with the Pukkelpop bootleg video dubbed with the Osaka mix audio. You can check it here:

I love Rhiad. Exept this little 10 seconds keyboard intro
What? There's no keyboard intro. There's some beat there and a really good Fortus riff soon after, but there's no keyboard stuff. BTW, there's nothing wrong with that at all. I love it.

for me it wasn't madagascar that convinced me of the potential of this whole thing, it was riyadh.
Agreed 100% rey. I love the song, this is what I expected to hear by Axl. I've been hooked for this tune since the first time I heard it. There's some AMAZING riffs, an absolutely cool chorus and some really smooth 3 guitars works. Actually, I don't know how can someone hates this song saying how much is "techno" or "industrial" or something. This is the most rocker song by the new band and they did a terrific job IMO.

Silkworms has no solo and it wasn't played on Docklands.
He just thought that synth beat intro was some kind of a keyboard effect.

GNR is unique. Not "normal"  :P I also think you don't really understand the meaning of the word shredding.. slash shreds too you know ?  :P

Slash doesn't/hasn't ever really shredded.

Shredding can generally be defined by such guitar techniques as "fret tapping", "sweeps" coupled with use of the tremelo arm or whammy bar while using "pinch harmonics". Players like Eddie Van Halen, Vai, Malmsteen and Buckethead employ such techniques where as Slash is a much bluesier player (pentatonic). Sure, he can play fast when he wants (check the amazing outro solo on Rocket Queen) but he uses different techniques such as hammer on, pull offs etc.. so he's never been considered a 'shredder'.
