How does one become a moderator?

That's a question I get asked quite often here.

Here's the official answer: I pick people who I think could be moderators and then ask them.

None of the current moderators has asked me in advance.


The moderators are also people who have been visiting this board for quite a while so they know how this thing works.

What about later on when you do need moderators and I've been around?

I find it amazing how so many people want to become a moderator so badly. Apart from having the utmost privilege of being hated by hundreds of people and not even being paid for it, I can't see many advantages to that situation.
Oh yeah, of course it allows you to vent your bad mood on poor unsuspecting members, but that's about it.

I want to be a moderator very badly so I can use it on my resume. I find that a BA from UMass Boston just isn't cutting it in the job market :rant: ...

But being a moderator at the most prestigious Guns N' Roses board on the net might give me the extra edge that could get me into Harvard Law School...

Save that privivalge for the younger people of this generation *cough*me *cough*

I was a Moderator at about 3 different sites which did have it's perks, at this site I cannot see what the real perks would be.  Being a moderator is quite a bit of work mind you.  Not just anyone can be one.  The bad ones don't last long.  Enjoy being on this site first before wanting to do all the work behind it.

Being a moderator isn't great all the time though...

One time...I went to the bathroom, to wash, after dinner, and I found my flannel, in the toilet. Another time, I went, into the toilet and all the brisles, bar one, had been cut off from my toothbrush. Another time, Chris put bleach in my shaving cream, and...jarmo stiffled a giggle.
