Yeh - your right - the opening riffs do sound alike. at the same time "war machine" sounds familiar to STP's sex type thing riff which sounds alot like a danzig riff .. I forget the song name but the word "snake" is in the title. I'm sure you can find similarities in certain sections to a lot of songs. Both Steven and Duff were Kiss fans, so I wouldn't be suprised if there wasn't some type of influence from Kiss in a GN'R song.

Also: -The riff in "Paradise City" sounds like Black Sabbath's "Zero the Hero." -The end riff in Motley Crue's "Droppin like flies" sounds like GN'R's "Locomotive."
