Title: Ronnie James Dio
Post by: RichardNixon on March 09, 2005, 07:51:24 PM
Any RJD fans? I really like a lot of his stuff. I just got his first band's self-titled debut album, "Elf" (1972). I thought his albums with Rainbow and Black Sabbath were awesome. Dio also has a lot of cool albums, like "Holy Diver." I haven't listened to his new album yet but I hear it's good.

Funny, I just started listening to Dio a few weeks ago, and they've become one of my current faves.  "Rainbow in the Dark" is such an awesome song...I've listened to it dozens of times by now.  Dude has an awesome voice.  I'm also checking out some of his Rainbow and Black Sabbath stuff, although so far at the moment I prefer the Black Sabbath tunes I've heard - "Neon Knights" and "Children of the Sea" - to the Rainbow stuff I've heard.  "Stargazer" is pretty good, but I think it's a little overrated.

I like his lyrics a lot - they're not your ordinary love songs (at least not the ones I've heard).

I hear many of his songs on internet radio: Last in Line, Rainbow in the dark, Mystery, and that amazing song Heaven and Hell.

Ooo, an "amazing song", eh?  I'll have to download that one.

I love that song "We Rock".  Just the fact that they were pompous enough to put that title on a song, I love that.

Heaven And Hell is one of my favourite songs of all time  : ok: Assuming we're talking about the Sabbath song here, not some other song with the same title.

I first learned about Dio from the Tenacious D tribute song to him, "Dio."  It's pretty awesome, kinda funny, maybe slightly disrespectful but I think it's all meant in good fun, especially since he posed for a photo with them, with him "passing the torch" to Jack Black.

"Holy Diver" was definitely his best album.  Some of his other ones have some good tunes, "Sunset Superman" for instance.  And the guy puts on a good show.  Sounds as great live as he does in the studio.

For the band Dio, get the albums Holy Diver, Sacred Heart, and The Last In Line. Everything else is for hardcore fans. For the man Dio, get his Black Sabbath albums Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules, and especially Dehumanizer. They're all excellent.

I was a  H-U-G-E  Dio fan in the 80's.  I don't think I ever bought any cds since every "album" I had back then was on a cassette tape.  I'll bet I buy Dio cds eventually.

Back then, his videos were awesome as well.

Dio's good stuff.  He's a legend too.  There's a 2-disc Dio Anthology out there that looks like a really good listen.  It includes stuff from his Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and solo careers.

His Sabbath stuff is totally over-looked.  People completely shit on it just cause its not Ozzy.  IMO he has a better voice than Ozzy.  Heaven And Hell is an excellent album, same goes for Mob Rules.

Heaven and Hell is definitely an overlooked classic.

Unfortunately the newest song that he is on, "The Chase" off of Operation: Mindcrime II doesnt exactly demonstrate why he is considered by many as a Metal Legend

Contrary to published reports, legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW) **has not** died after a six-month battle with stomach cancer.

After rumors started circulating via the Internet late Saturday that Dio had lost his cancer fight, BLABBERMOUTH.NET reached out to Ronnie's wife/manager Wendy Dio, who sent back the following message at approximately 11:35 p.m. PST on Saturday, May 15 / 2:35 a.m. EST on Sunday, May 16:

"I am at the hospital and Ronnie has NOT passed away!!!! He is not doing good, but he is not dead.

"I will let you know if anything changes.

"Thank you for your concern."

***UPDATE***: Wendy Dio posted the following message on Ronnie's official Twitter profile at approximately 3:45 a.m. EST on Sunday, May 16: "Don't believe the rumors, Ronnie is still hanging in there!!! Hugs, Wendy Dio." ***

It was only a month ago that Dio, 67, spoke about his battle with cancer with the Artisan News Service on the "black carpet" of the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, which took place on April 8 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. When asked about how he had been feeling since he was diagnosed with the disease late last year, Dio said, "Well, I feel good and bad at times. It's a long process. Chemotherapy is a... I never realized what a difficult thing it was to go through. It's a real cumulative effect ? the more you have, the more it piles up on top and it takes longer and longer to get over it. I find it very difficult to eat. I don't like to eat anyway, so I guess that's OK. But I know I have to. But this makes it very, very hard. But if you're determined to beat it, then you have to go with what you believe is going to beat it for you, and in this case it's that. I go to a great hospital in Houston called M.D. Anderson, which I think is the best hospital in the world, I have the best doctor in the world, Dr. Ajani, who I really trust and I really believe in, so I think I've done all the right things. It makes me feel positive about my life and positive that there is a lot more of it to live."

Earlier this month, HEAVEN & HELL canceled its summer tour plans in Europe due to Dio's treatment for stomach cancer. The band said in a statement that Dio wasn't "well enough to tour this summer. We hope that everyone understands and want to thank fans and industry colleagues for their continuing support at this time."

Ronnie James Dio has performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects included the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He is currently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also included former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.

Metal legend Ronnie James Dio dead at 67
AP, May 16, 2010 5:00 pm PDT

By WAYNE PARRY, Associated Press Writer Wayne Parry, Associated Press Writer
Ronnie James Dio, whose soaring vocals, poetic lyrics and mythic tales of a never-ending struggle between good and evil broke new ground in heavy metal, died Sunday, according to a statement from his wife and manager. He was 67..

Dio revealed last summer that he was suffering from stomach cancer shortly after wrapping up a tour in Atlantic City, N.J. with the latest incarnation of Black Sabbath, under the name Heaven And Hell..

.
"Today my heart is broken," Wendy Dio wrote on the singer's site, adding he died at 7:45 a.m. "Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away..

"Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all," Wendy Dio continued. "We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us ... Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.".

The statement was confirmed by Los Angeles publicist Maureen O'Connor..

.
Dio rose to fame in 1975 as the first lead singer of Rainbow, the heavy metal band put together by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who had just quit Deep Purple..

Dio then replaced legendary vocalist Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1980 with the critically acclaimed album "Heaven And Hell," considered by many critics to be one of the finest heavy metal albums of all time. His on-again, off-again tenure with Black Sabbath touched off an intense debate among fans as to which singer was the true essence of the band ? a discussion that lasted until his death..

He also enjoyed a successful solo career with his self-titled band, Dio, in between his three stints with Black Sabbath (1980-82; 1992; and 2007-2009, when the band toured as Heaven And Hell, to differentiate it from Osbourne-led versions of Sabbath). Many of his most memorable songs revolved around the struggle between good and evil, including his signature tune "Heaven And Hell." He also drew heavily on medieval imagery in songs like "Neon Knights," "Killing The Dragon" and "Stargazer.".

"He possessed one of the greatest voices in all of heavy metal, and had a heart to match it," said Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French, whose band toured with Dio since 1983, and was to do so again this summer at European rock festivals. "He was the nicest, classiest person you would ever want to meet.".

Dio organized an all-star charity collaboration in 1986 called "Hear N Aid" to raise money for famine relief in Africa, styled on the successful "We Are The World" campaign of a few years earlier. His solo hits included "Rainbow In The Dark, "The Last In Line" and "Holy Diver."

Ozzy looks solemn following Ronnie James Dio`s death

By Joanne Clements May 17, 2010, 12:15 GMT

Ozzy Osbourne shopped solemnly for clothes just hours after learning of rocker Ronnie James Dio?s death.

Osbourne, Dio?s Black Sabbath predecessor, was stony faced as he accompanied wife Sharon to the Malibu Country Mart in California.

Dressed in his trademark black clothes and sunglasses, the British singer carried bags of shopping from the James Perse boutique. Sharon, also in black, followed behind.

?Ozzy did not seem himself at all,? one eyewitness said.

?He was walking in and out of the shop, clearly agitated. Sharon was really having to look after him and lead him around.

?He didn?t smile once. It was obvious something was wrong.?

Heavy metal legend Dio died yesterday (Sunday), aged 67, after losing his battle with stomach cancer at a hospital in Houston, Texas.

The singer replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath in 1979.

Ozzy took to his Twitter page to pay tribute to Dio, writing: ?Rest in peace Ronnie.?

My God this sucks- I can't believe I actually saw his Last Concert Ever in Atlantic City last year- front row center & got his autograph at the end of the show. It was the second time seeing him- the first being just a week before that.  Thank God I did at least get to see him before he died. He meant so much to me & will greatly be missed.

Long Live Ronnie James Dio!

This is sad news.  I was only listening to Rainbow Rising two days ago and had planned to see H&H this summer

I feel fortunate to have seen him with H&H a couple of years ago, however.  Truly brilliant frontman, and I'd say that he's only second to Mr Rose in my estimation in terms of frontmen I've seen live.
