Title: The HIM Thread
Post by: AxlsMainMan on August 08, 2004, 05:41:13 PM
Alright, I just majorly got into this band last month and am absolutely loving their music. I only have the new greatest hits package and fully intend on getting the previous 4 studio albums. All i can say about this band after just listening to there hits countless times already is that they are utterly amazing and incredibly talented. The drumming is pretty medicore and guitars are pretty nice, but vocalist Ville Valo is the brilliant star of this band. His voice litterly sends shivers down my spine in alot of the songs. I want to see them live, because i think it would be one of the greatest concert experiences ever, but I dont see a masive North American Tour since their just starting to gain fame internationally. Anyone else here really like this band? What are your thoughts/opinions/dislikes even about HIM? Easily the best new band and best cd ive purchased in years.. :)

Ive only heard the singles on Kerrang and i was quite impressed, oh and ive heard their cover of Chris Isaac's Wicked Game and i think they crucify that but the other stuff is quite catchy i am into so many bands and getting so many CDs right now it'll be a while before i get any of their stuff.  I had a chance to see them at Download in June but they collided with Metallica....what can i say?

Well, Ville Valo is a cool, level-headed guy. He's such a regular dude, with his feet planted firmly on the ground, I like that. I'm not really that much into HIM's music, but they do have some great stuff, I must admit. One Last Time is a brilliant song.

I've seen them live twice, at big festivals, and they were a bit boring. Maybe a gig at a club would work better.

I caught HIM at Download I wanted 2 c Metallica but HIM was very good I love Wicked Game I enjoyed it they went off stage early dammit and then I caught the end of Metallica  : ok:

I really started getting into HIM about 4 or 5 months ago. The first time I heard Razorblade Romance I was hooked instantly. I even got so obsessed with them that I carved their trademark heartagram into my ankle (I'm not mentally unstable, I just don't think before I do things sometimes). I hope that someday I will get the chance to see them live.

I liked Razorblade Romance very much but after that they have become a little bit too "pop". I liked the heavier sound that they had in the beginning..but still Valo have made brilliant songs after Razorblade, no doubt of that.

few pics of Valo:

Yeah, wicked game is easily one of my favortes, I like the version on the greatest hits album and their first album better then the heavier remix version. The Sacrament is overall my favorite track though. Only one word can describe it, and that is beautiful. The lyrics, Ville's heartaching lyrics and voice is just flawless

I don't see what the big appeal is...i've had razorblade romance for quite some time now and i still think they kinda suck.  they are too blatently goth for anyone's good.  come on...song titles like "Join me in death" and "death is in love with us" ::)  i think they're cheesy as hell and their lyrics are about as trite as thier boring pretentious music.  i don't see how you can't find them cheesy with Valo's deep whiney voice crying about his lost evil lover.....pleeeeeese :hihi:

Its a matter of opinion i guess, but I think Razorblade Romance is an absolutely brilliant albuma nd easily one of their best. Too blantently goth? What does goth have anything whatsoever to do with talent and originality? I persoanly only view Valo as sole true goth in the band and he is honestly to me one of the most intriguing and best rock front-man out there right now. With each album they just get better and out due themselves and still probably have so much more to offer in the future, so no i dont find his vocals cheesy at all. Beautiful and a breath of fresh air yes.

As far as I know it's done kind of tongue in cheek.

i don't see how you can't find them cheesy

By knowing what Valo's like as a person, you get a different perspective.

I like the Wicked Game cover and Join Me, which is a very depressing song. I don?t know how the guys in the band look like but for some reason I picture them as androgynous(however you spell that).

I love HIM.  They're goth, but in a catchy, early 80s, postpunk, keyboard-dominated vein, which I like.  And they combine with a metallic sound, which makes the music even more powerful, makes it actually rock.  Ville is a really charismatic frontman, and I really can't believe they're still only a cult band in North America.  They're easily better than almost any band out there today.

Have anyone heard the new single 'wings of the butterfly'? I kind of a like it althought HIM begins to be more and more pop.

I heard it today and I didn't like it at all it sounded to pop I hope the record is not like that at all, it also make me remeber such stupid band as simple plan, sum 41  and all the power pop  :hihi:

Title: Re: The HIM Thread

Wings Of The Butterly is terrible, way too pop and doesn?t sound HIM at all. Catchy it is, though.

In the late 80s a magazine said Axl likes to run over little poodles with his car. So I guess it's true because it was in a magazine.

PS. My toilet paper has more journalistic value than Metal Hammer.

I`ve been listening to HIM for the last couple of moths and they`re quickly becoming one of my favourite bands.
Their new album Dark Light is awsome too, songs like Wings Of A Butterfly (I know its the first single, but is one of the best from the record).
My personal favourites are Buried Alive By Love, The Funeral Of Hearts, Wicked Game (originaly by Chris Isaak), Pretending,Wings Of A Butterfly and Poison Girl.Plus, they did that song for Viva La Bam, dindt they? That one`s great too.
Villo is an awsome singer and songwriter, he`s got a really low voice but can reach pretty high notes too.
Any other HIM fans here?

Well if you want an opinion of them.  I liked their songs Buried Alive By Love & The Funeral Of Hearts and i thought they might be fair good.  considered getting/downloading an album but before i got a chance i saw them at Download back in June.  They were on before Velvet Revolver & Black Sabbath and i found them a bit blandy and samey, the crowd were clearly frustrated as they threw bottles and shit at the frontman, Villo? for most of the set.  Anyway to cut a long story short i found 'em kinda lame, probably not what you wanted to hear but...what the hell...

Plus, they did that song for Viva La Bam, dindt they? That one`s great too.

The song is called King of Rock n Roll made by their guitarist Linde (Daniel Lioneye). He also sings the song.

And btw, it?s Ville..

I didn't like the last single something with butterflies or stuff but their early stuff as Razorblade Romance and Greatest love 666 are absolutly awsome, songs like Right here in my arms, join me (in death), the covers of Chris Isaac's Wicked games and Blue Oyster Cult's Dont Fear (the reaper) brought a new meaning of depressed and heavy metal, Villie called it Love metal so as a new album, I think their best album IMHO is DS&BH
If people doesn't know too much of HIM, (even though there's another thread about it) the must listening would be, wicked games, join me (in death), funeral of hearts, gone with the sin, heaven tonight, bury alive by love, In joy and sorrow.
 :peace:

They should've never "crossed over" to America. Ville Valo is trying way too hard to masculinize his image over here, and their traditionally goth "love metal" is suffering by trying to appeal to their newfound sk8er boi audience. I've been a big HIM fan for a long time, and Dark Light had its moments, but I'm afraid I don't have high hopes for this latest one.

I've heard two songs from the record, can't remember their names as I'm not a big fan :hihi: The other one was ok, it had some cool riffs and melody, but the other one was just horrible. I don't know what they were taking while recording it, but it was simply awful as it had no real melody and Valo's singing was way off. I just hope it's the only song like that on the record.
