Here Today... Gone To Hell!

Alright, who here is a fan? If there was ever beauty projected through lyric and song, this is it.

For those who aren't familiar with MLB, it is one of the earlier "seattle bands" that revealed themselves circa 1990, if I am not mistaken. The group was fronted by Andy Wood and included Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, who later went on to play in Pearl Jam. After, releasing Apple, Andy Wood was taken to hospital, where he passed away due to a heroin overdose.
As far as I understand, Vedder and Cornell (Andy's roommate) formed Temple of The Dog in Andy's memory, after which Vedder joined Ament in Pearl Jam.

MLB are often compared to PJ and other grunge bands and one can't help but wonder what the ninetees would look like had Andy lived.  It's hard to describe their music to someone who never heard them.

For those who have heard them, what do you think? Do you think they would have been "the band" of the ninetees? Would there even be a Pearl Jam? Or Nirvana?

I do like them, but I think that PJ are better. MLB are on halfway from glam to grunge. A strange and lovely combination  : ok:

Stargazer is one of my favourite songs of alltime. But I dont think they would have been bigger than any other band from that era. In a way I think you can compare the Myth surrounding the band with the myth surrounding Kurt Cobain. We got some great music, but  could the music we didnt get have been even better..?

I think Chris had written two songs that he wanted to record with Jeff and Stone. That turned into a whole album of songs and since Eddie was up in Seattle, because Pearl Jam were starting, he got to sing on the album too.

The Temple Of The Dog song "Times Of Trouble" is actually the same song as Pearl Jam's "Footsteps". One has Chris' lyrics to the music and the other Eddie's.

Yeah, that's exactly what it is. You took the words right out of my mouth about the glam/grunge combination. They were in a way a link between the dying  Rock N Roll era and the soon to be popular new style.


Although, I agree there is a level of mystique surrounding this band, along with the sad question of "What might have been?" but I don't think you can compare them to Nirvana.

MLB wasn't given a chance to thrive on their success and get to the top. By the way, I love Stargazer.

to answer a few questions, yes Nirvana would have happened anyways, and they already had to some degree ;D
Pearl Jam on the other hand would most likely never have happened if Andrew hadn't died.

Making a documentary about Andy Wood, which is awesome.

I saw this movie tonight - it was part of the AFI?s music documentary series.  I met the director, Scot Barbour who answered questions about the making of it, right after the movie.  Andrew Wood's brother, Kevin Wood was also there, and it was pretty emotional seeing him.

I had only ever heard Chloe dancer/crown of thorns from a  long time ago, and I loved it, but I never followed up on the band.  But damn, this movie makes me want to hear more!  I love his voice and his style - it was not 'grunge' at all!  He loved KISS, and he was an incredibly flamboyant performer on stage. 

The movie had interviews with his family members and many of his friends including Chris Cornell, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, and there was even a GNR mention because Greg Gilmour was in Duff's 10 Minute Warning. 

But the best parts of the movie was just watching old footage of Andrew singing, joking, and messing around.

I wonder if he had lived to become a big star instead of Kurt, would there still be the rivalry between GNR and grunge, because Andrew Wood was part of both worlds, and that was amazing to see.

Now, when I listen to Say hello to Heaven on Temple of the Dog, it has a lot more meaning, and it's enough to make someone cry.

Both of those songs are amazing, Footsteps is one of Pearl Jams best songs IMO, although I didnt care that much for the version with the added harmonica that was released on Rare Dogs.

MLB was a damn good band, it would have been interesting to see what they would have become. I would have liked to see if they could have ever possibly topped "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns"

that's great - I really want to hear more.  Is this album different from the one called Stardog Champion?

Stardog campion is one of the songs and Stardog records was the name of their Polygram records imprint, I dont know if what you have is the same disc, the self titled has 17 songs plus a two song rarerities disc.    It should still be in print and available at any major record store. One thing i forgot to say earlier, the movie Singles was one of the greatest tributes to Andrews life, the CD had a song and a large picture of em on the back. The movie featured Chloe Dancer/Crown of thorns- originally from the Shine ep- it played it 2 or 3 times in really key scenes. it was a great tribute to someone who died before his time, and probably the biggest media exposure M.LB. would recieve............[/b]...R.I.P>Andrew Wood

Anyone here familiar with Mother Love Bone? While most people know them as a pre-cursor to Pearl Jam they really were a lot different?much more bluesy/grove-laden. Think Zeppelin meets Aerosmith meets Jefferson Airplane. The great Andrew Wood was like the love child of David Lee Roth and Janis Joplin with maybe a little Steven Tyler thrown in.

Anyway?if Wood hadn?t died, MLB could have been one of the biggest acts of the 90s. Apple is an awesome album?songs like ?Stardog Champion,? ?Come bite the Apple? and ?Stargazer? are classics that no one has ever heard.

Check out their album (also reissued as just a self-titled album) if you can.

Great band and one of the best names in the history of rock.
