Title: Are GN'R "cool" again?
Post by: RichardNixon on January 31, 2005, 08:32:57 PM
So they weren't cool maybe 1994-1998, but around '99 it was not that uncool to like GnR and now it seems more younguns are gettining into them. Thoughts?

Correction:

Guns N' Roses have ALWAYS been cool.

Whether certain people realize it or not is what changes...

If you've been reading magazines and newspapers, you would've noticed that GN'R are considered cool again.

They were looked at as rock stars a few years ago and nobody was interested in rock stars at that point. Everybody was supposed to be into the whole "anti-rock star" thing.

Now GN'R get mentioned all over the place and people are wearing GN'R t-shirts like it's some kind of fashion statement.

I don't think the "Greatest Hits" would've been this successful if it had been released in the late 90s.

I think the world needs Rockstars... and Rock n' Roll needs Rockstars.
- Oasis is going to blow everything away in few months with their new album and a huge Stadium tour
- U2 works fine and they'll make a Stadium Tour this spring/sumer in Europe
- I hope the new GN'R will follow soon...

Many of the big bands/artists from the 80s and early 90s are now become relevant again.  First, Van Halen re-united for a tour and a new album.  You have Velvet Revolver, with members of Guns and STP.  Then comes Green Day.  Then Motley Crue.  Then U2.  It just seems that people are so fed up with the crap that's rock music today and they are looking for something different.  Although bands like the Darkness and Jet are pretty good, I think people are looking beyond that for the last great rock bands, many of which I've mentioned.  Hopefully, Axl will jump on the bandwagon, because, yes, Guns N' Roses is cool once again.

good q...
in my opinion...
I realized that liking gn'r bk in 94 wasnt really that cool (highschool) bc like others have stated, grunge was on the rise (anti-rock stars).  So I was a bit ashamed of admitting I liked them...eventhough I'm a very outspoken person who doesn't care what others think (odd, huh?)

well are they cool now?  I think it's "ok" when I tell ppl I liked/like them....but I think the current/recent line up may not be THAT cool...esp. w/ buckethead (I mean it!)...when he was in, I think ppl where thinking ..."wtf??" (Think of how slipknot is sorta a joke)....

I think ppl definately see the OLD gnr as cool (think 86-89)....but the current band, it's something we're gonna see (although I know they are RESPECTED as a GOOD/TALENTED band)......

(aside: imo, I think VR is seen as cool, if that means anything :) )

short answer....NO

GNR with a reclusive insecure singer a bunch of people that noones has gotten to know, no new music, memories of a band headed towards big cheesy ballads and bigger cheesier videos, and a guy who wore a bucket on his head while he mimed (look up the word 'pretentious'....then look up the word 'wank').

As negative as Im being, the only people i EVER see with a GNR t - shirt are either ferals that ahve balding long hair  or younger people wearing a GNR shirt simply to take the piss.  Despite this a LOT of people LOVE appetite era GNR and love some Illusion stuff, so its not irreconcilable.

I still love em...well love axl and some of the 'em'....not including bucket, sorum, gilby or dizzy.

Here in Brazil is "cool" to make jokes about GN'R and say that Axl's gay, Chinese Democracy won't be released ans things like this.

But I'm glad to see that, around the world, it's changing. Like somebody said here on topic, things go on cicles.

Well said Jarmo.

I can remember when GN'R weren't cool (mid to late 90's) and it was an embarrassment to admit you were a fan, but now more and more people are pretty accepting about admitting to liking the band.
This is the original lineup I'm talking about too.

Most people (outside fans like the rest of us) tend to think the new band is a joke, still due to the VMA's appearance, which is a shame really.

Come on Axl, show us the goods! : ok:

I don't think they ever went out of fashion.....

They are much more in the news and media in general now - the band could dominate like never before if Axl was to re-emerge now, the situation has been very favourable for a few years now

I've never really cared whether or not GnR was considered cool by the mainstream. I loved them. The best band, with the best singer of all time, for me. And if CD comes, and the critics and media slam it(which I expect they'll do, no matter what it sounds like), it won't affect me. I likes what I likes, whether you likes it or not.

They've become trendy again, like alot of bands from their peer group have of late.

The 80's concert t-shirt is in vogue also so I think the term "fashionable" might be a better term than "cool"...

I don't think they are that famous again, at least in my country, rap, hip-hop artists and beat songs still rule here. Certainly better than mid-late 90s, there is some credit to the GH, but the problem is that while we know how anticipated is Chinese Democracy for years and years, many people still don't have a clue about it. It's anticipated for those who know the story, the others will say "Chinese what"?

that's true.. today in my economics class the teacher asked us "what do you want the most?" and i said "an album.. guns n roses' chinese democracy" and the class had no idea what i was talkin about and one kid even went "i'm sure you can download it off the internet cuz i downloaded eminem's album a month before it came out"

i just rolled my eyes and said "ok, thanx for the advice"

GnR is cool and always was cool. It's just that the average fans are ashamed to admit it. They think the new guns will suck and then it will justify their lack of interest. But us diehards know better. I was 18 when Appetite was released and have never and will never hear hear music like that again. The Illusions reassured the world how musically and lyricaly different this band was from all the rest. The drought is where all the doubt comes from. But we've all heard some of the new songs and know thatthe talent is still there. I think more people are wanting to hear this album than we think. They just wont admit it. Even the media that does nothing but tear down Axl want to see it so they can degrade this band more. Well, It's coming, soon seems to be the word, and when it does just watch how many people jump on this bandwagon. Great days lie ahead for us true fans.

I see old school GN'R t-shirts all the time in certain stores.  I look at how much they've sold and there's always only a few left.  They need to have NEW style GN'R tee's.

Yes I think in the eyes of the public and hipsters etc... there is a certain 'cool' attached to old-GNR particularly 87-91 era. I guess it's a retro type appeal, but i'd also say that the rise of bands such as The Strokes, Jet, QOTSA, White Stripes etc.. has shifted the focus back on the whole dirty rock n rioll vibe. Grunge made later day GNR look terribly unfashionable and bloated, while nu-metal was a fad and a bad one (not unlike hair metal) at that.

GN'R have emerged as not only cool but from a historical perspective are getting their dues as true legends. Their music is both classic and timeless  : ok:

From what I hear, around the time GN?R debuted  the majority wouldn?t have thought dudes like them trendy. But their music won people's hearts.
Burning sincerity is what moves people.
They may call it cool afterwards, then uncool or whatever a while later but fuck cares.

I say fuck what they think.? Who cares if GN'R is hip and trendy again!?? Not I.? I love the band's music now as I have since the 80's whether it was the 'thing to do' or not.? Most people I talk to here and there don't even know what GN'R stands for and have trouble naming any tunes.? The same can be said for Megadeth and Def Leppard - two of my other all-time favorite acts.? I don't give a shit if one more person still likes them besides me or if 10 million still stand behind them with me.? For me, it's about what I like and what I think is cool.? If other's agree with my preference in music - great.? If not - who gives a shit?? Not me.

True. At least when you answer to girls' question about what's your favorite band, they say I like don't cry from them. The more aware will say Scom, Paradise City or November Rain.

And something last, I've always believed gn'r are cool, but do they seem cool? That's another question and it should not bother as that much.

I was 15 when I became a fan heard SCOM on the radio went out and bought AFD and never looked back! that was 2000. I never cared if people thought they were "cool" they were my band that i liked and for along time it was only me but I've got several of my friends rockin' out to them now! : ok: and when I wear a Guns N' Fuckin' Roses T-shirt its not cause I'm some kid caught in the past and it sure as hell ain't cause 80's band T-shirts are in, it's cause I'm a GUNS N' ROSES fan!!!

i always visit this website for information on gnr and have never register the forum to post any of my views but after seeing this thread i just have to give my 2cents worth of opinion  ;D

i have been a gnr fan when they released their debut album appetite for destruction. THEY were the band that make me fall in love with rock music. before that i was into british pop/80s retro stuff(still do in fact ;D) and have never ever like rock music, even when the likes of bon jovi, van halen etc were the more popular rock bands and coming up with nice songs. but i just wasnt into it. but gnr change my world. i thought axl's voice was one of the most unique voice around. and sweet child o' mine really hit home. to me gnr is very original. they are just being themselves. just raw stuff.

so the topic question itself to me is really irrelevant because ultimately what attracts me to gnr is their music. not whether they are cool or not. they make me open my eyes to the world of rock music. and that there is really good music in the world of rock, and not just noise(i was ignorant last time ;D)

personally i dont really bother whether gnr are cool again or not. as long as they write good music, i will listen to them. its truth during the mid 90s they wasnt that popular. so what? i still listen to them. i still listen to the songs which i think is nice to my ears. i do embrace new stuffs like grunge. i am a huge nirvana, blur, suede, smashing pumpkins and weezer fan. i still listen to wham!, duran duran, tears for fears, pet shop boys, depeche mode, new order. when george michael admits he is gay my friend make fun of me for being a fan of his. so what if he is gay? if his music is good, i will listen to it and admit i am a fan. so what if u like something which may not be cool enough to admit it? if its good to your ears and you like it, be proud of it and admit it, even if its not cool.
