Title: First effects - dunno where to start
Post by: GNR_Green on December 24, 2004, 02:30:04 PM
I'm thinking about getting my first proper effects pedals or unit.  I'm looking for something that is good value more than anything, as I can't really play guitar well enough to justify the best kit!  This is for my own personal pleasure, shall we say.

At the moment I've got a Yamaha Pacifica plugged into a Marshall MG30DFX.  It's got Flange, Reverb, Chorus and Delay in-built, but you can't exactly change the setting and play at the same time unfortunately.  I'm guessing a distortion pedal would let you skip between the clean (or distorted) setting on the amp and distorted setting on the pedal.  I don't think it's worth getting a wah, as I can't play anything that will make use of it.  Is there anything else I should consider?

I don't have a set budget or this idea, but bear in mind I live in England so ? only please.

Thanks.

some effects aren't useful at all... I consider that it's stupid to buy a boss analog pedal that you will use posibly for 2 songs...

I'd go for a nice distortion pedal (boss metal zone for example) or a wah wah pedal. those are analog and great sound trought.

If you want you can buy a multieffects (cheap ones are digital and quality sux) to explore other effects before buying a good effect pedal

Like Aero said, get yourself a good distortion pedal / switch and or a wah wah pedal. But if your not interested in wah sound you should definetely get a switch between clean and distortion. Don't have price tags for you but a good switch ain't that expensive. Go to the guitarshop nearby and check out yourself and ask some advice there too.  : ok:

rock on and happy holidays all!

Ok, I went out and bought the Danelectro Beyond Metal (Black Liquorice).  I like the distortion, it is indeed beyond metal.  Noobish question to follow:

Playing it switching between clean tone and pedal distortion is fine.  What happens when I use it to switch between amp distortion and pedal distortion presents a problem however.  Is it normal for there to be so much 'noise' when the pedal distortion is selected?  Even when I damp the strings there's a constant hum/drone.  The pedal has a level, bass and an octave switch.  The octave thing doesn't seem to do a great deal sadly.  Is there a way of avoiding all this extra unwanted noise?
