Title: Is the time right for Guns N' Roses to make a comeback?
Post by: Scabbie on December 19, 2004, 04:32:10 PM
I'm gonna assume that Chinese Democracy will finally be released in February 05. Or March. OK lets say April.

Commercial and operational issues aside, is it a good time to make a comeback?

From a European perspective, my perception is that the most popular form of rock is 'garage rock'. You know, bands like the White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Jet etc. The general public seems to have been brain washed by the X-Factor & Pop Idol, or tied down to a particular genre (house, r&b, hip hop etc).

So how receptive do you think your country will be to Axl Rose? Do you think the press will be open minded and ready to give whatever he releases a fair hearing? How will the new stars of rock react to his return? Will the general public be open minded enough to accept music that may not be as accessible as Sweet Child of Mine and Paradise City?

The whole "curse of the `80s" phenomenon is over.

GNR has become classic and new kids are discovering them.

We need something good to blow away all the fake punk bands, sugery pop crap and something other than hip hop on MTV.

I would say the timing is good and the world needs Axl Rose!

I get a feeling that this album is going to be one that people will either love or hate. I really hope Axl pushes the boundaries...

Any time is as good as any. To me 2002 would have been the absolute perfect time, huge VMA performance: Axl Rose returns!, upcoming fall tour, in other words he had all the momentum going for him to drop the album and for the band to tour their asses off but something happened along the way and put things on ice. Even earlier this year when the GH album dropped would have been perfect timing. The album is appealing to a broader, and newer audience so why not release an album when your GH album is blowing everything else off the charts. But the Buckethead left and of course according to Axl made a mess of everything they had going. February 2005 is a fine time to drop the album, if another opportunity is missed then the band will continue to lose credibility and in all honesty the public will just stop caring for lack of better words.

Some of my friends and relatives who were big GNR fans have already stopped caring. Thats not to say they wouldn't buy the album if it was released, but more and more I feel its losing its significance and mystery....you know all this code of silence and secrecy stuff was fun for a while but now its almost so secret there's nothing to get excited about. And if old GNR fans have stopped caring, why should a 'newer audience' care at all?

So we are assuming that Axl isn't capable of writing a song that's as accessible as Sweet Child O' Mine or Paradise City?

Those are the songs that seperate a good album from a great album.  If Axl doesn't have quality material (that's worthy of the name "Guns N' Roses"), then it will never be the right time to come back, because no one will care (Oh My God!).

No, the right time was 6 years ago.

No it wasnt...

Interest in GNR is probably higher now than anytime post-'96.  Rock was deader than dead in '98.  "Oh My God" sparked little interest.  Now were seeing a bit of a resurgence in rock, especially "classic"-style rock (The White Stripes, Jet, Silvertide, The Strokes, The Hives)...meaning more guitars, less DJ action.  Live Era was an admittedly off release, but still sold an alarmingly low amount of records.  Id say theres even more interest in GNR now than in 2002, thanks in part to Velvet Revolver and Greatest Hits.  Now is actually the best time since Slashs departure to release the record.  Lets hope Axl and company dont drop the ball.

The perfect time would have been in late 2002.  Then I'd say Axl another chance of perfect timing this year with the greatest Hits and Velvet Revolver.  I agree with Scabbie.  As 2005 is coming near us I think a lot of people or starting not to care.  Wether Axl is the only one to blame or not I don't know but the GnR name as been dragged through a lot of mud.  BUT!!!!!  If they release it and the album is great I think that with time he will get the people's attention again.  It'll just take a little more work to have it all back.
