Title: Which rockstar death shocked the music industry the most?
Post by: Pryor Murphy on December 15, 2004, 03:53:16 PM
Which famous rockstar death shocked you, and the whole music industry the most? Was it Elvis, Hendrix, Kurt or somebody else that you will never forget? What do you think?

I don't know about the music industry side of this, although alot of other musician's have been commenting on it lately....But as I was not around when the other artists died(with the exeption of Cobain),I'm going to say,for me anyways,it has to be Dimebag Darrell.
I saw Pantera live once in 2001 I believe...Then I went to see Damageplan twice...Both times I saw Damageplan I got the oppurtunity to meet the guys in the band, and get pictures taken with them...Down to earth, caring of the fans is what they are...The last time Damageplan came by(the second time in Toronto Canada)was a week to the day of the shootings.
Now it's been a week, and I am still in disbelief.

Well,  only 2 rockstars died while I was alive: Dimebag Darrel and Kurt Cobain. And since I was 3 years old when Cobain died, and I didnt knew a shit about Nirvana, I?ll have to say Dimebag Darrel.RIP

I don't remember how the reaction was when Lennon or Elvis died, but I imagine the impact of Lennon dying must've been the biggest one.

Both happened before MTV.

A lot more than that actually...

Yeah, Lennon definitely.

Cobains death had the biggest impact on my generation.  Although Dimebag Darrels death was extremely shocking.

Lennon definitely.  The fact that he was killed the way he was, and that he was such an advocate for peace, so sad.   :'(

It's already been said but I would have to imagine it's Lennon. An entire generation looked to him on everything and he was taken really unexpectedly.

You know me Guys I will go with Freddie Mercury, that november day was really a preposterous day ?:'(, the music lost their last legend, I would say that a lot of people still misses him, also lennon I not sure but if he'd still alive he would have become God and have fired lighting from his hands and he would also fly ?:nervous:

John Lennon's death was felt worldwide. So I'd have to agree with his death being the most shocking.

I dont remember Lennons but that would have to be the biggest.
I do however remember Cobain vividly ( I was 16 ) and that had  and continues to have a large impact
It is always shocking and tragic when a creative person dies young and even more so if there is a violent element to it.

Hoon, Staley, Sublime's Nowell come to mind...

Speaking to my folks and older relatives about this, they believe Elvis's dead caused a bigger impact than John's death. Maybe just in Spain, but no one has ever topped the king.

I think dimebag, so unexpected

Jim morrisons death did a huge impact on me, and the industri-
-but it was not actually a shock when he died, it was like people knew it would happen

Many shocked me - Elvis for sure (I can remember how upset my mother was when we heard).  Lennon just stunned everyone and Kurt was huge on the news and shocking.  One a decade, I guess.  :-\

I agree with John Lennon's death being most shocking for the music industry. It was unexpected. I can?t remember it, but i?ve been told, that my mum was so upset about it, as she was a huge Beatles fan.

For me it was Cobains death.

Well, thats true. But I hadn?t heard Sublime until few months ago, and I had no idea sone of them had died.Shanon didnt impact me that much, probably because I didnt know he was dead until I got into Gn?R, and Staley?s did afect me but not as much as Dimebag?s death.SO I?ll have to go with my beloved Dimebag

Let all the rock souls Rest In Peace

One who, unfortunately, definitely didn't seem as a shock to the music industry because we all saw it coming was Layne Staley. It took seven years for him to be put out of misery. It's even more pathetic that he's so forgotten already, because the majority of the bands of the mid to late 90's owe their success to him and the Chains. He's the only musician who has died that I continue to cry over.

I know what you mean. Every year when the industry commemorates Cobain there is not a fucking word about Layne..

Not shocking, but very sad, Warren Zevon

Two for me: Rik l. Rik and Richie Manic. Ok, Richie might not be dead. But both represent true musicians, that didn't conform to 2.5 minute long songs that has been reatardedly frozen into todays youth (see The Holy Bible, and anything from 78 - 97 that Rik was involved in).

Music lost something special with those two, and not just teenage lust, as I suggest the other people mentioned in this thread are.

It would definitely have to be Lennon's death but that was right before I was born. The most shocking in my lifetime was Cobain, but that didn't affect me personally.

The biggest one for myself was George Harrison. It was to be expected since he was ill, but it was still upsetting. I remember turning on the radio one night and they were playing "My Sweet Lord" by George Harrison and I just knew he had passed.  :'(

well...Lennon's death was violent, which is what made it shocking...plus that he wasknown world-wide...yeah, i have to say this was one of the saddest events...Kurt Cobain's death, for instance, was somehow shadowed by the fact that it was suicide. that didn't stopped him from becoming a legend (man, i get so pissed at those shitheads that don't understand crap of Nirvana's music, they just heard of Kurt...). many other rock stars sadly died.  i'm sorta young so i couldn't say if the media made a big fuss (for example Cliff Burton died in a buss accident...but back then Metallica weren't mainstream...it atill really makes me sad)

i don't know about the "music industry" (sometimes it's so full of shit), i can only talk from my point of view

I think it would be John Bonham (Led Zep)... His death brought down the biggest RnR band in history... What a waste...

MTV were probably in the middle of practising a stunt for Jackass and decided to make it 'real'.
