Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Michelle on October 31, 2002, 10:31:38 AM I hope I'm not too far off topic, but I just wondered about where all of you (that attend the MSG show) will stay in New York? I mean, those who don't live there... Coz I'm attending the Hartford show, but I'll go to Hartford just for the concert and stay in New York the rest of the week, but don't have a hotel so far...
Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: BA on October 31, 2002, 05:07:02 PM i booked a hotel a couple of days ago.
its the skyline hotel.it is a mile away from MSG.it has a swimming pool.it looks pretty cool. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Michelle on November 01, 2002, 09:29:45 AM Ok, thanx. I guess I'll meet some gunners in new york coz I'll stay there after the Hartford show maybe until dec 6th.
Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Jczk1161 on November 04, 2002, 05:53:28 PM I was wondering what section some of you have for the MSG show. I'm in 340. Maybe we can meet up and have a few beers!

Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on November 12, 2002, 01:12:48 AM im going
arrive at the airport JFK , dec 5th in the morning, i will be drived to the arena, directly i think. but after .... i'll have to go there : Pine Brook Road, Bedford NY 10506 do u know where it is ? whats the best way to get there ? and not so expensive ... if people live near there, can u drve me back ? do you plan to go to a club or a party, or get some food all together after the show ? and before the show are u doing something ? like eating or whatever that would be cool if we meet at lunch, no ? and then we'll go to the MSg ... tell me. bessamk@free.fr THX. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: WSOUman on November 12, 2002, 02:20:18 AM i'm gonna be there in section 9, live in jersey so i'm taking the train in, very short ride.

My first time seeing 'em...got my ticket stolen for the Guns/Metallica show at Giants Stadium 10 years ago.
I think I'm in section 104. MSG's acoustics suck, however. Not pleased about that. Still, it is a cool place to see a show. For any of you out of towners traveling to the show and are staying in Jersey or Long Island...many trains/subways run directly into Penn Station (which is conveniently located directly below MSG). Does anyone get the feeling that something BIG is going to happen at this show? I mean, this is NY!!! The first and fastest show to sell out on this tour so far!!! Maybe we'll see "Round 2", since "Round 1" was in NY as well. Maybe some premiers of some new songs!!! Who knows...just glad I'm gonna be there! Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on November 12, 2002, 01:27:27 PM yes train.
do u think its dangerous at night the train ? is the adress i gave far fro the MSG ? how far ? anybody wants to do something before/after the show ? Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on November 12, 2002, 07:50:24 PM train to there :
Pine Brook Road, Bedford NY 10506 from MSG how much is it ? expensive ? how far the train station is to MSG ? where is the msg ? center of the city ? is there stuff to see aroud ? central park ? :P Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: mike_msg on November 12, 2002, 11:30:51 PM i know this is probably better as a private msg, but just incase anyone else is coming in North of nyc.....
hey Godisdead, fyi, you'll be real far from nyc....here's an approximation: http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=pine+brook+road&city=Bedford+Village&state=NY&csz=Bedford+Village,+NY&slt=41.193450&sln=-73.600450&zip=&country=us&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFClient=&cs=9&name=&desc=&poititle=&poi=&ds=n&mag=6&newmag=5 (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=pine+brook+road&city=Bedford+Village&state=NY&csz=Bedford+Village,+NY&slt=41.193450&sln=-73.600450&zip=&country=us&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFClient=&cs=9&name=&desc=&poititle=&poi=&ds=n&mag=6&newmag=5) just go to maps.yahoo.com to map any address in the USA. as for MSG, here's the address: 7th Ave. and W. 32nd St. New York, NY 10001 Looks like you'll have to take the Metro North Railroad into Penn Station...here's a link ..i'm guessing you'd be coming from Bedford Hills station... http://mta.info/mnr/html/planning/stations/har-bhil.cfm (http://mta.info/mnr/html/planning/stations/har-bhil.cfm) take the train into Penn Station....and yes, it's located in the sublevels of MSG. .....and by the way, the trains here are perfectly safe, ...just don't dress like a tourist or wear a big camera around your neck.....cuz then you're asking for trouble. ...that means don't carry a big map and stare at it while you're walking around the city. Your best bet is to walk into any big hotel and ask for help. good luck getting here to nyc. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on November 13, 2002, 01:59:27 AM man thx a lot.
really, i appreciate. im glad the trains are safe. so c ya all there. thx again mike. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Jczk1161 on November 15, 2002, 10:08:41 AM I used to live iN NYC, im im Jersey now. You might want to think about changing staying in Bedford. I wouldnt do it. Your better off going completely broke and staying in a nice hotel in manhatten. And im down for meeting up for drinks or grabbing something to eat, just post it also with ur age/sex/location (u are coming from)
thanks Joe [beer] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: AxlGunner on November 15, 2002, 11:44:45 PM just a note:
mta trains don't go to penn station, they go to grand central. thats on 42nd street on the east side. msg is 34th st on the west side. its a bit of a walk, but not too far really. also, i believe the last trains from grand central leave around 1:30am. after that you would have to wait until like 5:30 or something like that in the morning. But NYC is the city that never sleeps for a reason, and i'm sure you could find some stuff to do to keep yourself busy. also, the trains are really safe late at night- dont worry about that. also, they are not expensive, just a few bucks should be enough. Also, don't go to central park at night, lol. anyway, i'm goin to msg with some of my buds- see everyone there [ok] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on November 16, 2002, 12:05:53 AM yes.
we should defintly post a rendez-vous point (like in front of the MSg) at a certain time, and all the people from GNR forums (gnrx, htgth) could meet ... that would be cool. what about 2 hours before the show, and we can go eat or drink something. :P i know that american peolpe are nice :P so the train stop at 1.30 .... then 5.30 ... lol ... go to club after that... thats what we, french, do, go to club at 2 am :P [beer] im so exited :P Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: MR.BROWNSTONE on November 17, 2002, 12:44:20 AM Hey for all of you that are going to this great show at MSG, I have an amazing place you can go and eat if you want. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Mat on November 18, 2002, 05:24:44 PM It's awesome! I just got a tickets for the NYC concert. I don't know how it was possible, but I got two tickets for section 127 row b. Maybe some purchases were cancelled due to credit card problems, but it seems as that section just started to get sold. Still, it was a little expensive. $183.75. It's better worth it, but I guess Axl can't blew up that concert.
This will be a crazy week in december. I already have my tickets for both Boston and Hartfort concerts. Now, I will see them 3 times in one week. I've never seen Guns N' Roses in concert. I'm glad I missed the riot ten years ago here in Montreal. I was waiting until they would return, but I figured they won't return soon. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: BA on November 19, 2002, 01:45:24 PM its getting closer.
only two weeks today until i go out to new york. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: WSOUman on November 20, 2002, 03:53:34 AM also carmine's in times square is a primo restaurant, and i will have to argue that is the best chicken parmigana is the best you will ever have [drooling] i'm not sure on the exact location but it is right off of 7th avenue and is close to the smack dab middle of times square. just beware, waiting times to get a table can be a bitch. they serve "family sized" portions meant for sharing, and it works out best this way. you get to try numerous dishes, but i definitely recommend the veal marsala and the chicken parmigana. my response after eating the chicken was, "i am never brushing my teeth again." hahaha. we also had the cheese ravioli which was also very good, but you guys might wanna try some of the seafood. we didn't have any. anyway, i hope you guys have a bangin time at the show, i know i will! i'll be the guy in the guns n' roses shirt... Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: SINSHINE on November 25, 2002, 03:54:18 PM Don't know if it's an old rumor, but I heard Hoobastank was
opening for some future dates...maybe MSG? :-\ Or, better yet, maybe just Mix Master Mike and an early/longer Gn'R set!!! I was looking through some old bootlegs online and saw the set they did the first time they every played MSG (on the illusion tour). Axl made some kind of comment that they were going to have to pay $24,000 in "overtime" penalties...they still played what looks like 2 1/2+ hour set! Hopefully we'll get similar treatment on the 5th! ;D Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Jczk1161 on November 25, 2002, 05:04:11 PM I have hard absoutly nothing about hoobastank. I already have a room at the Pensylvania Hotel which is very close to the MSG, but I'd like to find some safe parking for the for two days. I will be coming from Hartford, and we would rather find a safe parking just outside NYC and simply take the subway. We never drived in NYC and we would rather not be stuck in the traffic. [no]
Is there any big and safe parking that cost less than $35 per day? Any Gunners going to MSG come hang out with us at Mustang Sally's from about 4pm to 7pm The little MSG Gunners mailing list shaped up pretty good... A bunch of us are meeting at this pretty cool restaurant bar just a few blocks from the Garden. The more the meaner... hehehe Lets invade NYC GN'R Style! feel free to circulate this invitation to other Guns forums / communities i think it'd be pretty interesting/cool to get the bar, 2ti, htgth, gnrx, etc.. fans all in one place... i know there are a lot of us 'out here' who are going to be there. [ok] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: SINSHINE on December 04, 2002, 12:09:51 PM Hey...just a heads up to anyone traveling tomorrow to the show. There's a snow storm that is going to hit us early morning and continue through the day (making the drive in
early evening not so pleseant). Here's what weather.com had to say... SNOW SHOULD START NEAR THE NEW YORK CITY AREA AROUND MID MORNING...AFTER THE MORNING DRIVE PERIOD. THE SNOW SHIELD WILL THEN SPREAD NORTHEAST AND COVER THE ENTIRE REGION BY EARLY AFTERNOON. AT THIS TIME...IT APPEARS THAT THERE COULD BE A COUPLE OF INCHES OF SNOW ON THE GROUND BY THE EVENING RUSH. TEMPERATURES WILL STAY COLD THROUGH THE EVENT...AND THERE WILL LIKELY BE MANY SNOW COVERED ROADS BY THE EVENING COMMUTE. Like I said, just a heads up to those traveling. Hopefully Axl IS, in fact, already in NY and this storm won't be a factor in his arrival time (he doesn't need anymore excuses to be even later) [confused] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: mike_msg on December 04, 2002, 12:30:02 PM NEWSFLASH!!! Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 01:28:43 AM I just got back from the show at MSG and it was f**k**g unbelievable. Best concert I've ever been to by far. Blew the doors off the two other times I saw GN'R: '91 and '92. I can't get into too many details because I'm toast and I have a long day of work ahead in a few hours...BUT- I just wanted to pass on that in the simplest terms- this was a f**k**g outstanding night for Axl Rose and the band.
I could not believe the level of doubt and nervousness that permeated the crowd before hand. People joking about the VMA's, riots, screaming for Slash and Duff- and all I can say is that by the end of the show Axl had the crowd 100% in the palm of his hands. It was a beautiful thing to behold a 40 going on 41 year old turn back the clock and leave everyone in a skeptical crowd utterly convince that they had just spent two hours with the coolest mother f**k*r in the world. Secondly- this new band is a caged animal...that was a near perfect show- and one is left with the sense that this band hardly broke a f**k**g sweat. Just wait....when Axl finally takes the leash off these guys and let's them play their own material....the world will be rocked. This ain't GN'R propaganda. See these f**k*rs whenever and wherever you can. I would go watch the exact same show 10 nights in a row and be blown away by it....GO!! Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 01:46:44 AM OK, well the setlist was the same, the only surprise was that there was not a lot of chatter onstage from Axl, but he seemed to be in good spirits. I think the show was definitely a sellout, aside from the seats directly behind the stage the place was packed by the time GNR took the stage.
I was a little worried at first because only about 1/4 of the place was full when CKY came on, then maybe 1/2 or 1/3 full for Mix Master Mike, but once the lights came down and GNR took the stage the place was jam-packed and everyone was LOUD! My ears are still ringing a little... CKY: Nothing special really, but they are pretty loud and aggressive, with a couple of good songs. The people that actually showed up were pretty responsive to them. They played about 5 songs, including a really funny Christmas/Thrash Metal song that got a good reaction. Mix Master Mike: Well he is good for what he is I guess, I think he would be really cool to see performing in a club/disco environment, but not in an arena rock show. He played for about half an hour or so, mixing some Janes Addiction, Led Zeppelin, RATM, Disturbed, House of Pain and Beastie Boys songs. The only thing that really popped the crowd was when he played "Fight for your right to party" Intermission/Flashing Session: Surprisingly most of the women in the crowd were pretty timid. I was expecting a lot of wild behavior from what everyone else was saying. A couple of girls kissed and flashed, while most of them hid their faces and/or kept minding their business. One girl in particular was WILD, they showed her about 4 times and she was very willing to show the goods, I guess if I was a girl and I shelled out thousands for fake tits I would show them to anyone who would start hooting and hollering too. This didnt go on for very long though because Axl was ALMOST ON TIME! Yes thats right! He was maybe 10 minutes late... GNR: The band went on stage about 9:45 or so, and they were fucking tight. Axl was on all night and didnt miss a note that I remember. The only "audio problem" he encountered was the fact that MSG was rocking and rolling singing along and almost drowning him out sometimes. Hey 20,000 people will do that to you. Most of the local sports teams here were represented by Axl, aside from the Mets and Islanders. He started the show in a Rangers Mark Messier Home white jersey, then a blank rangers 3rd jersey, a home Derek Jeter Yankees jersey, a Latrell Sprewell Knicks jersey, A Curtis Martin Jets jersey, a Michael Strahan Giants jersey, and a home Rangers jersey with #1 "Rose" on it. Axl didnt talk too much, he dedicated Knocking on Heavens door to Sept. 11th, calling New York the strongest city in the world. Cool stuff... He also made a remark he made before about critics calling the material "dated". The funniest moment though was when he brought out a box or Krispy Kreme donuts, and started talking about Conan O'Brien, I guess regarding him being called "Fatty McGoo" on his TV show. Then he handed donuts out to the crowd. Funny shit... I wont bore you with the setlist since it was basically the same. Besides I dont really remember it exactly and Im sure someone else will tell it. The rest of the band was dressed as usual, no major changes that I remember. The band played great, Finck and Buckethead's solos were impressive. For everyone who has been bitching about Robin Finck's "sloppy playing" I would like to give you all a big FUCK YOU! He was AWESOME on Sweet Child O Mine! Didnt blow a lick! The only complaint I have on him was his solo part in November Rain. Honestly Richard Fortus should play both parts of that song, he nails it down, but I guess they arranged it so each guitarist gets a part to play in it. Merchandise: Same as the previous shows, although there was a GNR hockey jersey for 100 bucks I dont remember being mentioned, but it was pretty lame. Everything was a fucking ripoff, I ended up getting one shirt and some stickers and my brother got 2 shirts. I wasnt gonna spend anymore since Im sure most of this shit will be on Merch.com for about half price next month. I really wanted the dragon long sleeve shirt but Im not shelling out 60 bucks for it. I think Zakk Wylde charged about half that on his website for a similar shirt that is cooler too. All in all it was a great experience, much better than when I saw them in Vegas. A very professional performance, the pyro is awesome and the sound was great. Axl was on top of his game tonight, and this band is really coming together. People who bitch about this being a cover band are morons, this band puts there own stamp on these songs and makes them sound new. And the new material is great, my only complaints are that I didnt get to hear a new new song, and I didnt hear Rhiad and the Bedouins. Oh My God would have been nice too, but oh well. If you are on the fence about going to one of these shows, GO!! You will not be disappointed, the buzz from the crowd was great after the show, and Im sure most of the people who attended are not internet GNR fans. A lot of younger teenage fans too who really seemed into it. GNR is back, whether you like it or not, and they are worth checking out. I cant wait for the album, but this show helped tide me over! I just want to clear a few things up:
1. The band played every song perfectly, note for note. 2. Axl's voice is the greatest it has ever been. Powerful as a motherfucking nuclear explosion. 3. Axl is NOT GOING BALD. His hairline is exactly the way it has always been. 4. This band will become the biggest band in the world shortly. 5. The show was professionally filmed. There was one guy on each side of the stage. they were in the air in these moving contraptions with video cameras. 6. Axl is in amazing shape. he ran all night, back and forth, and then some more. He jumped like a maniac. He sang like a maniac while running and jumping like a maniac. This guy is insane. 7. Axl hasn't had plastic surgery. 8. The pyro in this show is fucking sick. The light show, the confetti etc. Everything was perfectly placed. 9. If you didn't like this show, then you need to check your pulse because you are probably a corspe. 10. Buckethead is about to become a household name. he will be known as the Eddie Van Halen of this generation, maybe even more important. 11. Richard Fortus is sick on guitar. Excellent player. 12. Brain is an amazing drummer. This guy kills I will think of more. Feel free to ask me specific questions, although refrain from boring ones like setlists, merchandise etc. Good old Conan O'Brian was in the house tonight. it was funny. Axl mentioned that Conan was on a diet and that he should take a break from it. He had a box of crispy creme donuts and started giving them out. he said it was "Axl's white trash catering" or something. It was funny ;D Nick gnrx Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 02:38:46 AM First and foremost, it was an amazing show. Started just before 10 and ended moments before 12. Axl kept looking at his watch so someone must have made a real stink about the time.
Standard selection of songs but even the new songs seemed pretty well received from where I was sitting. I didn't notice a lot of people leaving as others have reported. But, here's my question: What is so important backstage that Axl can't stay onstage for an entire song except November Rain? What's he doing back there? This wasn't the leaving often changing outfits or blowdrying his hair that we all remember from the 92/93 tour. Any time he wasn't singing he ran backstage. What is back there? Is he back there snorting lines? Getting blowjobs? Wiping his face with a towel? Having a drink? What's up with that? Is this something that has been going on all tour? I've heard people complaining that he leaves a lot but I had no idea it was this bad; I figured it was just between songs like we were used to. Any thoughts? Ideas? Comments? -Dori DNB-list Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: tim_m on December 06, 2002, 03:56:27 AM from what i heard he was indeed there
Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 05:46:37 AM First thing, when i got to the soundcheck, which was complete BS and a waste of money i found out about an interesting scam ticketmaster/or whomever is in charge of tickets have...the SOLD OUT show still had seats in front row, and of course i got em.
It seems that they wont sell god seats at presale or regular sale, so that fans can buy crap seats, and then on day of the show they release all the good seats...this way the show "sells out" i had a long convo about this with one of the guards there. But moving on, CKY...yup only good thing from them was the xmas song...they dont sound that band...it's just that that their singer(s) can't sing...but only scream Mixmaster Mike was kinda cool... GNR...Wow, amazing, the only song i though was not their best performance was YCBM...Axl seemed to be running out of breath on that one. Buckethead solo was unbelivable...like nothing i ever heard before in my life, i have never enjoyed a solo this much...this guy is amazing. From my front row seat i must say the most amazing person to watch was Robin Fink, his facial expressions were unreal..he was really into it, the short solo followed by SweeT Child Of Mine was something else. Axl: given that this was my very first GNR show i was a bit dissapointed, i mean the jerseys are cool, but i like to see him in his older attire, the hair...hmm...the face, well he def bleached his eyebrows, i have no idea why...well he looked exactly like he did at the VMA's...i did not expect him to look exactly like on TV...a little bit unreal for me, i felt like i was watching TV. He sounded great though, had lots of energy and looked like he was in a good mood. Anyone notice Twiggy from marilyn manson in the crowd? All i all it was great, i expected to hear a new song, but oh well...maybe nest time Going to Philly tomorrow Dianachka gnrx Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 05:48:31 AM Wow whata show!!!!!!1

I am glad that I got to see them twice this week, once in Boston and then in NY. I left Boston yesterday a day early due to the snow storm and picked up some magazines on the way. I started to read People magazine (with Osbournes on the cover)they had a poll that said which rock star in their 40's rocks the hardest and the answer was Axl Rose - 49%, Bon Jovi - 38%, Bono - 8% and Sheryl Crow - 5%. I thought this was real cool. I arrived in Jersey and stayed with my friend.
Today I started driving down form Jersey to NY on a 4 hours treacherous road and bad snow condition but was lucky to arrive at MSG at 5 PM and also got a good parking. As I arrived Eva called me and so we decided to meet at Mustang Sally along with a whole group of people, unfortunately I couldn't meet anyone so walked back to MSG and met Bonnie(AXLNSLASH1). I had seats way back but then I went to meet Bonnie who was right upfront and luckily the people in those seats never arrived to I was seating in row C instead of row 37. Later Bonnie turned and told me that there is this cute guy on the right with some really nice GNR tattoo and when I turned it was Axl D (Sal) so I went and met him and we spoke for couple of minutes. Sal is such a nice person and I was really hoping to meet him and I am glad that i did. Bonnie kept telling me he is so cute, she had never seen his pics at the Bar. Anyway back at MSG, they were serving Champagne everywhere for a price but it was really neat to see this concert in a real Rock N Roll style. CKY took the stage at 7:45 PM and played their usual stuff nothing interesting. Mix Master came in at around 8:30 PM and played till 9:15 PM. There was very very little or infact just one lady who flashed, I was surprised cause in Boston the girls had just gone wild on flashing. Bonnie had this handwritten paper with GNR bar, D'NB list and AMB written and tried her best to attract the attention on the cameraman but he never saw her. Anyway Guns took stage at 10:00 PM with Axl arriving in Rangers Jersey. The crowd just went wild. He changed I think 4 times. The other guys were wearing the same stuff that they wore in Boston. The song list was as usual. Axl had some rants. He first of all thanked the entire crowd for this sold out show. the crowd really cheered him then. He then bought a box of donut and said that it was specially for Conan O'Brien(Conan had made some comments about him on his show) That was too hilarious, he then distributed the donut in the crowd. He also mentioned about his show in Chicago and how he had great time there and went on to say that one of the journalist had critised the show saying that the crowd did not like it but Axl said that probably this guy must be out having a drink or maybe taking a Midol since he did not hear how the crowd loved the show but that journalist should have had some PATIENCE. Axl was in a real fantastic mood. One time after a song he asked the camera to be focused on a couple in the crowd and asked the guy how his girl friend was. BH and Robin's solo were good. BH distributed his toys and in the end bought this huge toy and threw it in the crowd. Axl was running around the stage from one end to the other and each time he would go to the left side he would shake hands with the people at that corner. I saw this girl she just ran when Axl came to her side and holded his hand and didn't let go for a second but the security guys just pulled her back. She came back to her seat and started jumping. It was so crazy. In the end there was he confetti and I picked some up as a souvenir. The crowd was really good as people all around were dancing in between the aisle. Overall absolutely fantastic show. I am so addicted that I am now thinking of attending the show in Philly on Sunday, I have already booked tickets for the LA and Vegas show after I saw them in Boston. At the end Bonnie went up to Del James and spoke to him and asked him if he had any backstage passes and he told her that his pockets were empty and they had distributed far too many passes already. This man is really Jackal and Hyde and after hearing some stuff about him I just don't respect this guy anymore. Yes the passes are given to girls who dress cheaply and basically are sluts. Its sad since the people who get to meet Axl don't know any shit and people like Del are responsible for this crap. I think there are far too many true GNR fans out there who should be given the chance but I guess that is how the world is.It is Del and few other guys who go in the crowd to look for the girls. I hope someone tells Axl but I guess he may never know. Well thats all for now, I am really tired after driving back to Jersy. In case if I remember something will post it tomorrow. Goodnight folks. CCHAAN the bar Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 05:58:39 AM Just got home from MSG! Here is my review:
The night starts by meeting four friends for some grub. Then we walk down 8th Avenue toward MSG and see the big lighted sign: "Tonight/Guns N' Roses/Sold Out" CKY: As far as I'm concerned, they should add an "SU" to the beginning of their name. Mix Master Mike: He was really cool. He spun a lot of rock songs (Zep's Immigrant Song, Metallica's Seek And Destroy, a few RATM songs, etc.). Overall, a great choice for opening acts. Guns N' Roses: They hit the stage around 9:50 or so (not exactly sure). The introduction was some slow keyboard music. The crowd went nuts with the opening notes to WTTJ. The opening pyrotechnics set the mood for the song.the band smoked through it. Axl clearly demonstrated to NY that the VMA performance was a fluke. Then ISE, which rocked. I was surprised to see Buckethead running around so much. Mr. Brownstone came next, then Live And Let Die. Once again, the crowd went nuts for the pyrotechnics. KOHD was next, the lighters immediately lighting up, although the applause didn't come in until the first line. I don't think most people realized what song it was until then! Think About You next, which got a tremendous reaction. YCBM was a true shock.the band played it right on. Better than any bootleg I've heard to date. Then Finck's solo came and was surprisingly good. I've heard complaints about him.I'd have to say that next to Axl, tonight was Robin's night. Obviously the place went ballistic for SCOM, which featured an unbelievable RF solo. OTGM was next, followed by the night's first true rant. (Quotes are from memory.) "Is Conan here? Is Mr. Conan O'Brien here? I hear he's on a diet. Well, everybody has to take a break from a diet every now and then." He slowly walks to center stage with a box of Krispy Kreme donuts. "So I got him a box of donuts, Krispy Kreme donuts. Axl's white trash gourmet." He proceeded to throw a few donuts into the crowd. Then he handed the box into the crowd and told some guy to pass them out. (When I left, some chick went running to some guy with a corner of the box."Look what I got, look what I got!") I guess a retaliation for Conan's VMA comments. Then they brought the piano out. Axl started the solo with the asshole song (You are an asshole, blah blah blah.woops. Wrong song." Then the back and forth comedy routine. Then the deep and soulful solo. Then November Rain. Fortus did a killer job on the first solo. Finck did an okay job on the second. Buckethead stole the song with his outro solo. Next, Axl gave a short speech and the band played Chinese Democracy, which got a decent response. Next Madagascar, which got a better response. Then he introduced the band and Buckethead did his thing, starting with the nun chucks and robot dance to pre-recorded music with Brain on drums. When he got his guitar, he played some theme (not sure what song), followed by a guitar solo, Big Sur Moon, Star Wars, another solo (thumb slapping), Hog Bitch Stomp, Pirate's Life For Me, Wonka In Slaughter Zone. To clear this up, he played Wonka once through, using his foot pedal to loop it. As the loop played, he handed out gifts. (This was not pre-recorded as some reports claim; it was a loop of his playing from seconds before.) Rocket Queen next, then The Blues (best response of all the new songs). The solos in The Blues were amazing. Axl sang the end from atop the piano. Next, Axl gave his "the news say we sound dated" speech and ripped into My Michelle, which got an amazing reaction from the crowd. Next a speech about "my old friends, my former friends, my probably never really friends friends," or something like that. Patience. Then Nightrain. Holy shit Buckethead shreds on that song. The crowd was nuts. I looked around toward the end of the song.every seat as filled. I was in the 300s and was still standing from the opening notes to WTTJ. People in the 400s were standing. The crowd was sold.GN'R is back in NYC! After a few minutes, Finck came out and did another solo, which was great. Then Paradise City. With the pyrotechnics, the confetti and the three guitarists all soloing, the crowd went f**k**g nuts. And the best part of the whole f**k**g night.Axl's closing line: "SEE YOU NEXT SUMMER!" Axl's jersey selection: Rangers home, Rangers away, Yankees home, unknown (black), Knicks home, Giants away (some of this may be incorrect). Setlist: Welcome To The Jungle It's So Easy Mr. Brownstone Live And Let Die Knockin' On Heaven's Door Think About Your You Could Be Mine Finck Guitar Solo Sweet Child O' Mine Out Ta Get Me Piano Solo (You Are An Asshole/Back And Forth Comedy/Deep Moving Soulful) November Rain Chinese Democracy Madagascar Buckethead Solo (Bucket Chunks with Nun Chucks, Robot Dance - Unknown Theme - Guitar Solo - Big Sur Moon - Star Wars - Guitar Solo - Hog Bitch Stomp - Pirate's Life For Me - Wonka In Slaughter Zone) Rocket Queen The Blues My Michelle Patience Nightrain ENCORE: Finck Guitar Solo Paradise City Brian Bank DNB-list Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 06:03:53 AM Wow! And here I thought I'd get the first review up...
Just wanted to add a few quick things: Screw ticketmaster. We showed up a few hours before the show and got seats, we were told, in the third, fifth, and sixth row from the box office. We were thrilled. Then we got inside and saw the first two rows had been partially removed: so, really, we were in the first (Izabel), third (me and a friend), and fourth (John and Jan) rows. So, as I said, screw ticketmaster. Axl was in really, really, REALLY high spirits. Whatever kind of good mood you've seen him in recently, multiply that by ten. He was cracking up the whole show. At one point he was jumping around with Tommy (almost like he was imitating Tommy) and they were both laughing their asses off. If the rest of the world has the reaction to Buckethead I keep seeing at these shows, then the guy is gonna be a huge, huge star. Slash style. Period. A friend of mine had shit seats (section 400, all the way in the back), and started the evening as a BH naysayer. When I spoke to him half an hour ago, he said "Buckethead's got skills." So that's that. Axl slammed the NY Times writer who wrote the shitty Vegas review two years back. So expect a negative review from the NY Times. Axl's best line of the night, by far, while the band was playing the intro to "My Michelle": "This is a reuion tour, of sorts. I got enough of myself together to be here." Or something like that. And Axl did end the night by screaming out "See you next summer!" and something else, which I couldn't hear. So, hopefully, this won't be a RIR 3 kinda "next summer." Security was LAX. I could have snuck a bazooka in if I had felt so inclined. And they took it even easier on the girls then on the guys. Okay. Bedtime now. -Matt DNB-list Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: kidrock on December 06, 2002, 08:34:53 AM Thanks again Kiki for the reviews. It appears he has a tent set up with a misting machine like you see at pro sporting events to help cool the players, I am betting he goes in there to cool down and to help keep the vocal cords moist.
Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: SINSHINE on December 06, 2002, 09:09:11 AM MOTHERF@CKER!!! [rant]
Let me ask you a question. How many times on past tours and this tour has Axl started a show "on time"? Exactely! I've waited ten years to see Guns n' Roses...ten friggin' years...and of all the nights Axl decides to start the show on time he chose last night. I walked into MSG at 10:20 thinking I had another 20 minutes or so to wait for the band but as I'm walking closer and closer I see no one in the hallways and then I hear the most dreaded sound I ever heard in my life...it was "Think About You"! My heart sank. I got to my seat, turned around and sure enough, Guns n' Fuckin' Roses. My heart sank even further into my stomach...I had missed the first 5 songs [crying] Then, about a half second later I realized that GUNS N' FUCKIN' ROSES WERE RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME PLAYING YOU COULD BE MINE!!! Holy Shit! This isn't real! Oh, but it was! [yes] You've heard the setlist and countless reviews so I won't bore you with that. What I will say is that (not because they're one of my favorite bands of all time) WITHOUT A DOUBT THEY WILL BECOME EVEN LARGER THAN THEY WERE IN THE LATE 80's EARLY 90's!!! [yes] [yes] [yes] Every song was note for note. The power was like that of a Metallica show...hit you square in the chest! Robin was the biggest surprise of the night (as I had heard some pretty negative reviews of his playing). He fuckin' wailed on that axe! Buckethead was incredible...truly one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Brains was equally as impressive as was Dizzy, Richard and Tommy (who looked to be having an Fn' blast the entire night!). Then there's Axl...holy shit can this motherfucker sing! The highs the lows the screams...all studio quality shit! I went with a friend who had seen them on the Get in the Ring tour and the Illusion tour. He had his guard up going into this show...as Slash is his guitar idol. He was in awe. He couldn't believe how much passion Robin and Buckethead had put into their playing. Truly blown away! He went from saying "...yeah, maybe I'll buy Chinese Democracy when it comes out, we'll see" before the show to "...holy shit, when does Chinese Democracy come out? This band fuckin' rocks!" afterwards. [yes] I'm still very bummed I missed the first 5 songs...but I left there with my assed kicked wanting a second beating! Last night's show also marked the 40th concert I've ever been too and let me say...could last night's been the best of them all??? Very possible! Still in too much awe to figure it out! ;D So look out world...your ass is about to be kicked hard!!! GUNS N' ROSES ARE BACK!!! [hihi] [hihi] [hihi] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Dragon on December 06, 2002, 09:31:17 AM I might hava a clue on why Axl runs backstage in between songs, in an MTV documentary about the Guns n Roses and Metallica tour(Live and Loud 1992) they go on a backstage tour with Duff. And when they go by Axl's little corner Duff make a comment about a 'non smoking' sign and says it's because the oxygen thing.
If I would run around and at the same time sing like Axl does on stage, I sure would need oxygen and lots of it. And thanks for all the reviews. [ok] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 10:38:36 AM Thanks again Kiki for the reviews. I'll by you a drink someday if I ever get to meet you. Shit I'll buy you as many as you want. Now your talking! It's a deal! 8) Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 11:01:10 AM OK, here is my review...
I'm still half a sleep so I hope you can make sence of this review... Last time I saw Gn'r was in 1992. This new band is better. Honestly I had my doubts, but I came to realize that if the "old friends" were up there on the stage it would have been soooo cool.. for about a song or two.. it would have gotten played out and boring quick. here are some things I will remember forever about this show * axl, NY loves you * B-head had a crazy solo, people loved him! (anyone noticed the lighting ficture on his bucket? it was like a x-mas tree.. soo cool. ohh man, did axl find the right guy or what?? * peace brother... peace brother...(if you were there you saw this on the screen too.) * robin wore a cool hat in the begining kind of like the pic on his web site. He too was great. he does this cool dance with his legs. * brain, dizzy, chris, tommy, fortus...sorry didn't notice you much... paying too much attention to axl, bhead and robin.. Fortus did play a cool Nevember rain solo.. * axl, NY loves you man * Gnr has a future.... music was excellent. muthafukka can sing, can run, can perform..Its very Holywood.. each character is so off the wall... different, kinda freaky very cool. It gets your attention and wanting for more. * who ever said something special was going to happen at this show wasn't kidding. Indeed it was.. * the new songs are sooo coool! I love them I really like the lyrics.. * MSG is a great place for a show.. there was magic in the air.. * Bootlegs suck!!!! I hate them... I have so many too.. All it does is ruin the music sometimes.. maybe because of the quality of the recordings.. they make you think that they can't play good..all the bootlegs combined does NOT do any justice to what this band tryly sounds like. I'll post some more as it comes to me.. I'm going to the philly show tonight... I'll write a better review for that one. peace brother.. troubledwine the bar Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: john on December 06, 2002, 11:09:48 AM If axl had said that thing about september 11 at the show i was at i would have flipped.
Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: pilferk on December 06, 2002, 11:22:26 AM They actually talked about the show on Howard Stern this morning and they specifically talked about Axl going backstage. There is, indeed, and oxygen tent back there that he heads into for a few seconds to get his breath back.
One of the Stern cronies also accused Axl of lip synching to a track. Thankfully, a listener called in and corrected him, telling him, indeed, the "Axl" background vocals ARE played as a track, but the main vocals are not pre-recorded. They did give the show a VERY good review. The Howard crony who talked about the lip synching said he just couldn't believe the vocals were THAT perfect...that's why he suspected lip synching. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: jarmo on December 06, 2002, 11:29:13 AM They're using backing tapes? WTF?
I haven't noticed that on the August bootlegs.... :-\ /jarmo Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: john on December 06, 2002, 11:38:43 AM ........And people argued with me for days about how there was no pre recordings of any kind.

Gn'R rocks! [peace] [beer] [hihi] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: XxWickeds10xX on December 06, 2002, 12:20:43 PM [ok]
That show was unbelievable. I seen GnR back in the day, i think it was either 89, or 90. They still had the original lineup, and they were great! But lastnight was something different, maybe it was the garden air, maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was just that bad ass AXL. Hes still got "it". Before the show, i wished that it was the original lineup making a comeback, and kicking ass. I wanted that more than anything, but these guys made me forget about that. Buckethead kicks ass, along with Robin, and Richard. They played those songs HARD. Harder than ive heard in a while. It was like i was hearing them for the first time. They are back....and bad! GUNS AND ROSES 4 EVER!!! Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: nadia on December 06, 2002, 01:13:29 PM What a great show and waht a mature crowd.....
Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: TyRod Tulip on December 06, 2002, 01:51:19 PM What a great show and waht a mature crowd..... I was amazed at how mature that crowd was in Boston too. I guess that is what 11 year will do to a crowd of mostly teenage kids. BTW, I didn't notice any prerecorded backup vocal being used in Boston and I specifically listened. While it was loud at time, I think I would have noticed backup vocals. Even in LALD when on the album, the backup singers sing "You never did, you never did, you never did", that was not in the Boaston Show. What tou heard in Boston was the entire crowd singing those lines. Another instance is in Nighttrain when on the album Axl sings "Love that stuff" and "I could never get enough" and other things like that were not used in backup prerecordings. /Tulip Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: mike_msg on December 06, 2002, 04:22:57 PM Here's my late review...
CKY....thankfully, I showed up during their second to last song. The crowd was acutally pretty nice to them. ....No one really booed them off stage. But the crowd cheered when they said that they were playing one more song. About 50% of the ppl were there for the opening acts. MMM...it was alright. He did a tribute to Jam Master Jay....the crowd was only into the rock songs he was spinning. Seek and Destroy got a good response. Not too many flashers during the intermission....but there was that one chick below section 107....dang....trashy...but entertaining. I'd say about 90% of the available seats were occupied at around 9:45. when I saw the 3 roadies walk on stage at 9:55, I was like "holy shit, is this it?...they're grabbing the curtain! Boom. all the lights go down". The ambient music plays, ..and the fog machine is cranking away. Robin comes out....and WHAM! the show is on! Right before or during KOHD, Axl says after the events of 9/11, NY is the strongest city in the world. It was good to hear that. Everyone remained standing for a long ass time. Some people started to sit down during Chinese Democracy. Though it was a combination of reasons, ....1: they didn't know the lyrics, 2: standing in a pair of boots hurts your feet. So it was understood. It felt kinda weird being the only one in my section singing along to the new songs. ...but I guess bootlegs will do that to you. [hihi] I nearly crapped my pants when Axl called out Conan and brought out the krispy kremes. The band looked very happy. I've been reading the negative stuff about Robin this, and Robin that.....well, last night, he shut everyone up....he took the lead on like the first 5 or 6 songs.....and that thing he does with feet is hilarious! Amazing. With his black hat and white suit, all he needs is a black cane and he'd look like he's from A Clockwork Orange. Buckethead won over a lot of new fans. Everyone dug the nun chuck and robot dancing. Fortus showed his true colors during the last few songs.... a lot of ppl say that he's an Izzy carbon copy.....but I think he's better in terms of on stage performance. That Matrix camera thing is pretty cool at center stage. ..And to add to what a lot of ppl said about the crowd.... I was amazed at how civilized and behaved everyone was. No fights, nothing. it's so true what 11 years does to a person. It felt like the show moved so fast. It ended just before midnight. So i'm thinking it's 1 or a combination of reasons why the show started at 9:55.... #1 - Axl read the preview in the NYPost #2 - MSG told the band that anything past Midnight would result in heavy overtime. #3 - Axl wanted to start early cuz ppl have to go to work in the morning. #4 - It's the first show to have been "sold out"...so it was our reward. Anyways, it was an awesome show...and worth every penny. I hope the band has continued success with the rest of the tour. [beer] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: john on December 06, 2002, 04:28:39 PM To the people who saw this show and at least one other. Were there more cameras at MSG than the other shows you saw? It makes sense that if they were going to put out any sort of music video or even full concert video, it would be for this show. Anyone notice?
Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: W.Bailey on December 06, 2002, 06:17:00 PM hey guys,This show was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. What an awesome night!!! im not gonna give a long review because well I would just be repeting things
I just want to say a few things... 1) first I wanna give a big ups to people sitting in 335 and everybodyelse at the show, you guys were awesome, you could tell Axl was feelin the crowd 2) the best songs were SCOM, LIve and let Die, and Nighttrain 3) Richard Fortus was fucking amazing, I hate to say this but he really puts Izzy to shame, he played amazingly. He looked awesome in his white suit. 4)Lastly, Axl Rose. He was absolutely incredable, the man is a god. I didn't care that Slash and that drunk Duff Mckagan werent there, thats how good he was. OK, peace gunners Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 06, 2002, 06:30:49 PM Just got back from a f**k**g amazing concert at MSG! AXL IS BACK!! His voice is JUST like it used to be, and not as messed up as it was during the VMAs. I wasn't really paying to much attention to the other players, just mainly Axl.
The night started off with CKY, which I did not get to see, cause I went out to a bar before the concert. I was up in Section 407, which sucks, but it was still great! Mix Master Mike went on and did awesome scratching on the turntables. He played Rage Against the Machine, Busta Rhymes, Disturbed, Missy Elliot, Beastie Boys, and a couple others. My favorite was when he did House of Pain which kicked ass. After that there was a break and the camerea tried getting girl to take off their shirts. At the beginning no one did, but then one girl did, and they kept goin back to her, even putting the spotlight on her. Then the lights went out and Welcome to the Jungle came on. I'm not too sure of the playlist because I was a little buzzed, but I do know that someone was smokin up 4 rows down from me. Axl wore different jerseys. He had a Jets, Giants, 2 Rangers, Knicks, and Yankees jerseys on. He sang Knockin on Heavens Doors n dedicated it to the 9-11, which got a lot of people to pull out their lighters. He came out with Krispy Kreme Donuts and said something about him supposed to be on a diet, but I couldnt hear!! He joked around and sang November Rain. He then mentioned the former band mates for a second, refering to them as "My old friends, my former friends, somethin somethin,(i think he said) I guess they were never my fuckin friends anyway" or somethin like that. Then he sang Patience. Buckethead did his nunchucks, robot dance, then guitar solo which got the crowd around me to say Slash Sucks! Buckethead, Richard, n Robin all kicked ass doing different solos. I was suprised because I didnt know Richard Fortus was a really good guitar player until today when he did November Rain (I think...cant remember). Anyway..They did Night Train and then left the stage. Robin came on and did a solo for I think it was The Blues. Then the rest of them came on after like 10 minutes and sang Paradise City. That was the end. Axl tried saying something but i wasn't coming out of the microphone, then he said something else loud, but I COULDNT HEAR IT!!! He was running around and came over to my side of the stage often, which was cool. Axl messed up a part of the lyrics for You Could Be Mine, which I spotted out right away. I was like the only one who knew the words to Chinese Democracy and The Blues. Now my voice is dead, and burns like hell. It was defitnetly worth it though. GUNS N' ROSES KICK SERIOUS ASS -Hightlight of the night was when a scalper was taken away by undercover officers, and he was all like "Please sir, Please!!" The #1 Gunner GT Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: SLCPUNK on December 06, 2002, 07:16:55 PM I'm a little tired, so forgive me is I totally missed it. But is there a review yet from NY times or any other paper? I'm wondering what they said, especially since the always harsh Howard Stern said it was a great show (according to another post).
Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: C0ma on December 06, 2002, 09:59:43 PM I response to john I had seats to the Boston, Hartford, and the New York Shows....I'd have to say based on camera volume I'd say that Boston would be released. There were many more cameras and mics placed all over the stage.....I was closer in New York and didnt see nearly as much.
Maybe Axl liked the Last Live U2 DVD that was recorded in Boston?? Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: BA on December 07, 2002, 04:23:08 AM this is very late and i will not write a review cos everything has probably been said.
well this was the third time i have seen the band this year and it was probably the best of the three. i just got back from new york to shitty england about an hour ago so i am tired. i must say everytime i see b'head he impresses me more and more.he played the longest solo of the three shows i have seen them at.he played big sur moon which bought a smile to my face and also chicken binge aswell as all the other stuff. the band looked really happy together.axl was on a high and was very happy hpwever alot of the time when he was speaking i couldnt make out what he was saying.i know he slagged the guy off that wrote thqat bullshit review in chicago.and when he dedicated nockin on heavens door to 9/11 that was very moving.the doughnut thing was funny. anyway same songs as you all know which was a shame for me but hey nevermind. one thing though i have never seen so many dick heads at a rock concert bgut in a place like msg what can you expect. one more thing i would just like to say that mix master mike sucks dick and doesnt belong at a rock concert.gnr should get a decent rock band to back them other that sky.all there lead singer did was swear every single word.he must of thought that it was cool to swear every single word. anyway gnr rock as im sure you all know by now. Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: MR.BROWNSTONE on December 07, 2002, 04:31:40 AM Thank you all for the reviews. I wish I was at that show. :'(

Just wanted to know what you think of the place? [ok] [peace] Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 07, 2002, 09:51:59 AM Saturday, December 07, 2002
BY LISA ROSE Star-Ledger Staff NEW YORK -- After a decade of virtual inactivity on the concert scene, Axl Rose didn't let a little winter storm stop him from debuting his new Guns N' Roses crew for a capacity crowd at Madison Square Garden on Thursday. The snow was deep, the trains were late and the roads were slick as hair gel, but the band kept its date and satisfied fans' appetites for nostalgia. Although the players have changed -- Rose is the only holdover from the original lineup -- the metal rang familiar. The two-hour performance drew heavily from their seething debut album, 1987's "Appetite for Destruction." There were only three new tunes off their fabled "Chinese Democracy" record, which was planned for a 2000 release but has yet to surface on store shelves. Rose has replaced his old GNR cronies -- Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler -- with hired Guns from the alt-rock ranks. The new roster includes Primus drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia, six-string guru Buckethead and former Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck. Guns N' Roses was a nefariously volatile live act during its bandanna glory years. The group's punctuality was poor and they could be a sublime mess or just plain sloppy, depending on the night or the alignment of planets. On Thursday, GNR '02 took the stage at the civilized hour of 9:50 p.m. and they played smoothly. Too smoothly. As they ran through riotous faves like "Welcome to the Jungle," "Paradise City" and "Rocket Queen" with gloss and precision, one longed for their former rag-tag nastiness. Their old shows were punk onslaughts. This performance was more like a hard rock oldies revue, a singalong session where the crowd knew the words but Rose needed a TelePrompTer. More fresh material would have been nice, although the new numbers sounded stale as year-old sponge cake. The audience response to the "Chinese Democracy" tunes ranged from mortuary silence to weak-wristed applause. Even if the musical aspect of the show was routine, there was some bizarre behavior between songs. Before "November Rain," Rose trundled out with a box of Krispy Kreme donuts, handing them over to the front rows and muttering about Conan O'Brien. He was presumably reacting to the late-night talk show host's recent joke that the band should change its name to Fatty McGoo and the Guys Who Aren't Slash. Rose's humorous protest was lost on many fans. "Ef-you Axl," one surly beer-guzzler cried. "Play some music!" Rose, 40, has grown a bit doughier with the years and his wardrobe was oversized sports jerseys rather than slinky leather duds. With his spray of braids, he seems to be cultivating a circa '98 aggro look ࠬa Korn's Jonathan Davis. The voice, however, remains the same. Rose is still able to emulate Ethel Merman and generate hyena screeches. The concert opened with the breakthrough smash, "Welcome to the Jungle," the dirty opening riffs spurring high-fives and hoisted cups throughout the venue. More retro power-chords followed with "It's So Easy," "Mr. Brownstone" and "You Could Be Mine." Rose sprinted across the stage like a track star as the troika of guitarists traded licks. Capped with a KFC container and shrouded in a white mask, Buckethead was the most technical player, frenzied fingers creating alien soundscapes. Fricke's style was sexier and grittier, while his shaved-in-front, long-in-back hairdo made the lanky guitarist resemble Riff Raff from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Ex-Love Spit Love member Richard Fortus was the most traditional of the three, both in fashion and sound. Although the concert was lo-fi by post-millennial standards, there were the requisite pyrobursts with "Live and Let Die" and a downpour of sparks that accompanied the epic climax of "November Rain." As long as the group stuck with the all-hits program, the arena was ecstatic. The crowd had little patience, though, for their stray attempts to branch beyond their history. Buckethead's solo spotlight, a prog-rock m?lange of "Star Wars" and "Willy Wonka" themes, was greeted with derision and upturned middle fingers. Fricke's mellow instrumental interlude also failed to enrapture the masses. Of course, this show was not about looking to the brave new future, but reliving the spandex past. The concert was simply a simulation of the band's '80s heyday, a quick-fix time warp for fans and a quick buck for Rose. Some grooved to opener Mixmaster Mike's turntable medley of hard rock and hip-hop, but others booed. A more popular opening act was the display of female physiques and lifted shirts on the arena's jumbo video screen, captured by a camera that prowled the audience for eager volunteers and unsuspecting victims. http://www.nj.com/entertainment/ledger/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-0/1 03924515296480.xml Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: Kiki on December 07, 2002, 09:53:00 AM Older and wiser, Axl brings out heavy Guns.
Even the biggest brats eventually grow up. Look at Axl Rose. In the singer's first New York show in nine years, Thursday at the Garden, he repeatedly expressed gratitude to the crowd, made light jokes, put on a slick, professional set and even showed up relatively on time. It was quite a change from the Axl of old, who liked to launch into wild-eyed rants, fight with his own fans, show up hours late and pace his performances with the discipline of a kid suffering from attention deficit disorder. Then again, Rose has much to prove with this tour. By eluding the public's view for nearly a decade, Rose had become the Norma Desmond of rock ? a recluse and a rumor-magnet of legendary proportions. After so much time away, Rose has not only dared to try to fill the nation's top arenas, he has billed the event as a Guns N' Roses tour, even though his seven-member band features not a single other member of the original group. Curiosity alone probably could have filled the Garden (it was sold out). But the band's first tiptoe back into the pop pool ? an appearance at August's MTV Awards ? sounded unfocused and desperate. It was "Welcome to the Bungle" time. Here, Rose was in far better yowl, and his group seemed much more rehearsed. Rose did, however, cut an odd physical figure. At 40, the once-svelte star appears to have taken one too many trips to the dessert table. To cover for it, he sported an array of muumuu-size sports jerseys, matched with pants large enough to hide Fat Joe. His cornrowed hair looked like something ripped off Bo Derek and ghoulishly sewn into his head. Yet, in his classic role as caterwauler, Rose was king. He hit all the right screeches in such songs as "Rocket Queen," "Nightrain" and "My Michelle." The band, featuring veterans of acts from Primus to Nine Inch Nails, played forcefully. Lead guitarist Buckethead (who sports a KFC container on his noggin) showed particular skill ? far more, in fact, than original GN'R axman Slash. As musicians, the old band were hardly missed. But there was no rapport between the new guys and Rose. Essentially, these players operated as a top-shelf tribute band. Naturally, this gave the show a deeply nostalgic feel. It featured just two new songs from GN'R's upcoming album, "Chinese Democracy," neither of which made an impression. Not that it mattered. The two-hour performance stressed songs from 1987's "Appetite for Destruction," which represents the band's sole great achievement. Ultimately, the evening worked as a tame and misty look-back for late twentysomethings, featuring the unlikely transformation of Axl the loon into Axl the warm and fuzzy. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/story/41294p-39000c.html Title: Re:December 5th, NYC @ MSG Post by: A.L.R. on November 06, 2003, 01:47:52 PM I just wanted to point out, Axl messed up on Rocket Queen.
