Combined bands has fraction of talent

By John Wenz / Daily Nebraskan
September 23, 2004

When Guns N? Roses hit the ears of music listeners in 1987, hard rock and glam metal found something grittier, dirtier and more dangerous than RATT, Winger or Nelson combined.

They were the hard-drinking, fast-living, heroin-shooting, hat-wearing, audience-bating rebels that burned down the walls of cutesy crap like Poison.

After some years of infighting, the band finally dissolved, leaving the lackluster cover album ?The Spaghetti Incident?? as their final full-length testament to the band?s glory.

Now, it?s 10 years later, and ?Chinese Democracy? is still on its way, supposedly.

But ?Chinese Democracy? involves no one that made Guns N? Roses great, outside of mentally unbalanced lead singer Axl Rose.

No, those elements went on to Velvet Revolver, who with the advent of The Darkness and a return to the fun hard rock of long ago, certainly stand in a position to take over the world.

But Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum have a fatal flaw in their return to the world of music.

That flaw is ex-Stone Temple Pilots lead singer and supposed-ex-junkie Scott Weiland as lead singer.

Oh, and forgetting what a good song sounds like.

With ?Contraband,? the debut album of this super group (though I hesitate to use the word ?super?), Velvet Revolver shows just how diluted any great musician can become over time.

With all the bands out there living in a post-GNR world, and to a greater extent a post-STP world (which in itself is a frightening thought), it would be safe to assume this band would have a lesson or two to teach the horrible hard rock groups of today.

But alas, the band is like the puppy that lost it?s way, except in this story, the puppy drowns, comes back as a zombie and just sort of plods along, acting just like everyone else out there.

?Contraband? is a muddled mess, a horrible album of a band that in the end should not have been.

The guitars, which should be searing with Slash behind the axe, instead sound merely tepid. The drums are rote, the vocals drenched beyond recognition in computerized effects.

Everything that made GNR great and STP occasionally above average is gone.

Instead, there is just a great void. A void that this band could never hope to fill as they are.

Rather than present something different and dynamic, Velvet Revolver lets themselves be upstaged by the Nickelbacks and Puddle of Mudds in the world.

And this, in fact, is the scariest fact of all.

The confusing thing about this article is the author slams Axl by saying no one that made gnr great cept for axl is working on CD but in the next sentance he slams VR saying they forgot what a good song sounds like.

I suppose the Daily Nebraskans editor had the day off?  The syntax is laughably bad and it has the substance and development of a bad high school newspaper article (the Daily Nebraskan wouldnt happen to be a high school newspaper, would it?).

Velvet Revolver upstaged by Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd???  That's the stupidest thing I've ever read!  Slash, Duff, Scott, Matt, and Dave could release an album of Buddhist chants and it would still blow those generic shit bands out of the water!  Whoever wrote this has his head up his ass.

Finally a journalist who can bring both old GnR and new GnR fans together and agree on something: That this punk really dosent have a clue about rock n roll. If he hates rock so much, why do he have to review rock bands? He should stick to his Britny Spears and NSYNC cds? !!!

The author obviously has no knowledge of music at all, being upstaged but Nickelback, come on, that is just so wrong, my God, i dont know how you could write an article on VR and even mention Nickelback, maybe with the exception of shitty a band they are, and it is refreshing to see a band like VR come out and show these sorta bands what rock & roll should sound like.
