Title: Some songs should never be covered
Post by: younggunner on September 23, 2004, 10:20:49 PM
I just listened to A Perfect Circles first single, "Imagine" cover. They butchered the song. They are an excellent band but they should have never attempted to do this song.....

I thought the same thing when Sheryl Crow attempted SCOM.  I couldn't help wonder who gave her permission to do that.  Its painful to listen to.  It's probably been discussed on this board long before I ever joined, but I really can't stand to hear it.  Yuck.

I agree certain songs shouldn't be covered or at least they shouldn't be covered by certain artists.

Limp Bizkit's cover of The Who's Behind Blue Eyes is cringeworthy. I can't believe they cut out the best part of the song for that lame robotic voice. To add insult to injury I heard Fred spelled Pete's name wrong on the album.

The Foo Fighters version of Pink Floyd's Have a Cigar is just as bad.

It just seems that Redhat can't do anything right. He's such a hollywood whore.

Check out "behind blue eyes" by Silvertide they do a pretty good job (If you've been listening to the radio you might know there song "Ain't Commin Home").  I'm not sure about Shinedowns version of "Simple Man" they don't butcher it at least and I respect that they choose a song by Lynyrd Skynyrd that wasn't a big hit and is a personal favorite of mine.

Worst cover ever just behind  Limp Bizkits behind blue eyes has to be keith richards butchering his very own jumpin jack flash with aretha for a fucking whoopie goldberg film, does this count?

If memory serves me correct, Have A Cigar was on the b-side of the Learn To Fly single. Their drummer Taylor Hawkins sings it rather than Dave Grohl, and it sounds great.
Foo Fighter's cover of Baker Street kicks ass too!

I also wonder why wasn't Axl pissed off by that one.

The Foos cover of Darling Nikki is much, much, worse.

Tatu's cover of How Soon Is Now was horrible. That song has such a special 'atmosphere' that it cannot be captured in cover versions.

I think the problem is not the song that's covered, but the band that's covering it.Knockin on heaven's door,LALD,Mama kin or the TSI songs are amazing, and GNR could rise to their level and give them new life.

So I think the topic should be "Some bands should never cover songs"

I'm listening to APC's cover of Imagine right now, I like it. They took it and made it sound like an APC song. They did a good job, they didn't try to be Lennon, they did it as themselves, that's good.

Death had the guts to cover Judas Priest's Painkiller!  :o It isn't as bad as the Bizkit and APC, but it isn't as good as the original. It's just mediocre. It's impossible to improve on that song, it's like trying to make a better SCOM, it's not going to happen. Chuck's raspy voice and the new guitar solos in the song didn't add anything to it.

Limp Bizkits cover of Faith by George Michael is awesome.

Mind you it was on their first album....nuff said.

Yeah.  Britney Spears recorded "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll", and I wondered if I was actually in hell.

Stereophonics' cover of Hangbags and Gladrags is reason to hate the Sterophonics.  It almost sounds exactly the same except Stereophonics are a crap band with no charisma.

Busted covering Teenage Dreams (or whatever it's called) is also a crime to music.

Never touch Bohemian Rhapsody or Stairway To Heaven because those two songs especially are in a league of their own and you WILL be laughed at.  :hihi:

Also has anyone heard Wyclef Jean's cover of Another One Bites The Dust by Queen? Awful. He changes a nice catchy song into a song about robbers and murder or something. And he uses bits of Freddie Mercury singing in it. Bastard. And whats worse, Queen put it on their Greatest Hits III album!

I dont know ...but I hate Metal bands that covers classics tunes just to make them sound heavier, or stronger.
Its like a fuckin Trend. Like that shitty band  that covers "Take on Me" , just to make it sound like heavy metal and gain fans and put more money in their fuckin pockets , and they are the first ones to criticize Metallica and call em "Sell Outs"  ::) Those fuckheads never will be real and unique!

Yes I have and as I told to Mr. Dead Horse once, that song really screw up the entire CD it really sucks , I guess the decission to put that song with Wyclef Jean was by Roger Taylor he is always trendy.
