Title: Illegal I
Post by: tomass74 on September 21, 2004, 09:56:22 PM
Not sure there has been a post about this song. I have seen this song refered to as one of the weaker tracks on Contraband. I just wanted to say that it is definately one of my favorites. I think the chorus is awesome and it stuck out to me from the beginning. Not that it is very complex or anything, I just love the way it is sung. I love when he repeats "lying there".? The music is great too. Very underated song!!!!!! Thats all... I haven't really listened to the CD in a couple weeks because someone borrowed it from me. Looks like I will be buying another copy......

eh, it's alrite. I love contraband but that song kind of blends in. I think the song that kicks the most ass and gets looked over form that album is spectacle.

spectacle rocks my fucking world. Illegal I is only as good to me as it comes before my fave song on the album.

yeah both Illegal anf Spectacle are GREAT songs get get overlooked.  At first I thought Spectacle was the worst song on the album but then I realized how complexed it sounded. It is the best guitar song imo. It kicks ass in the same way Nightrain does as far as guitars go.

Indeed. Both songs are great. Scott did an awesome job in those tracks and Slash really put a lot of power through his les paul.

Agreed.  I personally feel, IMO, that this is one of the top 3 songs on Contraband.  Illegal i Song is a crazy song, and crazier live.

Every fuckin' song rocks.  Not one single bad song on the album.

It's all AAA quality.

Not true the producers butchered BIG MACHINE. Live the song has so much energy and vibe and got the crowd going and chanting, but on the album it sounds like shit and sounds repetitive. After a few listens you wonder what the heck happened to this song it had so much potential

Illegal is a bad ass song.  Best drumming on the whole album.  I love it.

I fully agree! I think Illegal I was even voted off 1st in suvivor? However, I think it & SMF are by far the best two rock cuts on the album.

Illegal I takes u alot of places. Love the chorus & I love Slash's little strungout solo towards the end. Plus, it's probably Sorum's shining moment as a drummer. A great song!

i love the solo of slash's on illegal I

why do people say matts drummin kicks ass on illegal i? is it cause he opens it up with "wipeout" or something? his drummin sounds bout the same to me on every song.

I think the drumming intro is a little more full-on than Wipeout, and listen to the rolling drum pattern in the verses, it doesn't sound like straight-ahead rock drumming like in the other songs on Contraband.

sorry his drumming is good i guess, i just have a bias towards Sorum cause i think he's a fake poser and an ass kisser.

Got an explanation for either?

His legendary confrontations with Axl doesnt sound like the work of an ass-kisser to me...

Some would argue that Matt's an asskisser because he stayed close with slash and duff but I think that's ridiculous. I mean wouldn't the safer bet around 96 when he left to have stuck with Axl, one of the biggest rock stars ever, and the GNR name (which Duff was still very much a part of) then to allegedly kiss slash's ass? I think the reason he stayed close with duff and slash is because they got along well and when it came around time for the project duff and slash loved his playing. I mean it's very doubtful they woulda said "we can find someone we like better but sorum baked me brownies this morning and told me my ass still looks good in my leather pants so lets go with him." And as far as being a poser, well I don't know what that's about. Sounds out there to me. And as much as I love Axl you could make much more of an argument he is a poser by trying all new image stuff and the braids and the jersey and all. He looks like the guy in that video by the offspring "pretty fly for a white guy" in that thing.

Matt sorum is a good drummer i give him credit, i dont know booker to be honest, i guess to me he just seems fake.

Have you ever knew someone in your life, i actually have a couple friends like this, and its like no matter what u do, they've done it or know someone who has done it also or better.

I dont know, my views of Matt started souring the more i read his interviews.? Scott doesnt have to talk about his drug problems, neither do slash or duff, but with matt its like he has to brag to try and make himself look cool.

I dont know he just rubs me the wrong way, his comment on axl's pussy piano and how he didnt sign up for that etc. I mean cmon, u couldve quit!! so isnt he pretty much callin himself a sell out? If he had so much integrity to be in a rock band, why didnt he just quit GNR when he saw the pianos?

I laugh when i see him in the FTP's video

that video is so amazing and so great until his parts, Matt laughin and smilin and kissin two girls at once which is another attempt at him to try and look cool. That video is so meaningful and touchin, Scott's acting is amazing, Duff does a great job, slash is somber, but heres Matt, Mr Happy fuckin sunshine while Scott is on the verge of death. It's just a bad contrast to me.

when u are cool u just are, when u are not cool u have to do or say shit to make yourself appear cool, right or wrong thats how matt sorum rubs me.

Why is he trying to be something. He wore jerseys back in the day as well. He has also said hes been wearing jereseys and following sports for quite some time now. Axl does his own thing.

I am not the biggest Sorum fan, its all about Steven baby! But I don't think he is a poser, nor do I think he is an asskisser. Although I agree Matt does seem cocky but then again alot of rock stars do. I just don't understand the hate some people have towards him.

Hey, I am not a drummer, but it shouldn't take one to figure out that the drumming on illegal eye is probably the most difficult on the song.  He is a good drummer.  Sometimes he is like a machine, but with no soul.  However, this song impresses me.  Listen to the fills, and he doesn't really stop the whole song.  He has some pretty good fills in SMF as well.  I think he has improved since the Illusion albums.  But back then, Axl often told him how to play, so it is hard to tell.  Slash and Duff like him, and those two are pretty loyal as well.  I guess they are just comfortable playing with him.

I've been thinking a lot about this song today and I think it would make a great 3rd single more so than Superhuman because of that catchest ass/brilliant chorus with Slash's amazing playing underneathe!

They really do need to come out with a kick ass in your face song next. I would say Super Human, Sucker Train , Or Dirty Little.
