Title: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: IndiannaRose on August 29, 2004, 03:23:44 AM A commercial for Guns N' Roses's new album just came on VH1 during 'Insomniac Music Theatre'. I was thinkin' in my head that this had to be a "wtf!" moment but it turned out to be a joke. The commercial came out of nowhere at about 2:00 am central and it said something to the extent of "if you have the new Guns N' Roses album then you've gone through time with a time machine to the year 2047", and then it just faded out. I am assuming it was just some Conan O' Brienesque joke about Guns N' Roses since the VH1 logo appeared at the end of the commercial, but it's so peculiar that this came out of nowhere.
So strange. ??? Title: Re: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: ppbebe on August 29, 2004, 03:34:01 AM Hmm??? Weird joke out of blue. So didnt they say Chinese democracy? Title: Re: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: Jonx on August 29, 2004, 06:40:32 AM Thats kind of strange. Does anyone know if VH1 has ever done this to any other band before, do they usually have joke commercials?
Maybe this is the start of something??? Axl likes to poke fun at himself, just look at the cartoon at the begining of the Rio show and some of the rants from the 2002 tour about starting riots and being late etc.... This could be the start of some promotion for the album. I can see Axl putting something like this out. As for the VH1 logo at the end of the clip maybe it was produced by VH1 specifically for VH1. Another thing, how do we know this album is still called Chinese Democracy, when was the last time axl said that this is what the album was called? Just my thoughts Jonx Title: Re: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: Dont Try Me on August 29, 2004, 06:49:00 AM That is very strange.... out of the blue they do a commercial about that? Its pretty cool to see people would actually put commercials on tv about this album. When theres an actual release date the hype/press and anticipation is going to be at an all time high. It's definitely not just a joke. It could be a joke as a part of a show they're preparing but they don't have enough time to make fun on fans... But I saw the same thing real late last night after I got in from partyin.

Title: Re: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: D on August 29, 2004, 01:55:21 PM i agree with the whole why would they do that argument.
why GNR? why a band that has done very little? No one can sit here and try to convince me that the Behind the Music was to strictly promote VR. U have the A-Z etc etc now this commercial, the BTM november release date, it is almost sept, the month where something has to go down if we are getting it this year. Will be interesting to watch the VMA's tonight, not that i think they will be there, but a commercial or anything is possible. Title: Re: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: DemocracyRose on August 29, 2004, 01:59:15 PM It could be the first part of the commercial... and theres more to come... :-\

If you're saying that commerical time on VH1 at 2am is expensive then you obviously don't know "lots of shit". The only people watching at that hour are alcoholics and the unemployable, hardly the prime demographic that advertisers go for. I'm just saying that 45 seconds of TV time is too expensive to spend it on a joke... Prior to my current work with a firm that produces documentaries I have worked for CNN and NBC as a producer. I am very familiar with how much commerical time costs and and VH1 is at the low end of the scale and at 2am it would be relatively cheap. This isn't opinion, it's industry fact. Many people do stay up very late, they're just not in the demographic groups that advertisers consider to be important. Therefore there is less demand for those time slots and they are worth less. The NBC show ED has poor ratings but was kept on the air for longer than it should have been because the people who were watching it were from a demographic group that was highly sought after by advertisers. Therefore those slots were in demand and made alot of money. You should watch VH1 some time and see how much time they waste with utterly pointless garbage. Title: Re: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: patvalley on August 29, 2004, 09:52:38 PM Sorry guys but it's nothing to get excited over. VH1 (and MTV) have a bunch of funny commercials like that, I've been seeing them a lot recently. I wish it was real but it's just a commercial for VH1.
However if you really want to believe it's a commercial for something GNR related, feel free. ..... I'm just saying that 45 seconds of TV time is too expensive to spend it on a joke. Not if it's an in-house ad for Vh1. Theyve repositioned themselves as a pop-culture commentary network. Certainly the myth and humor around Axl Rose and Chinese Democracy is something to comment on in today's pop culture...could just be an ad by the network to show how 'smart' they are about that shit. Title: Re: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: Saul on August 30, 2004, 12:22:56 AM seems rather silly that they are willing to burn a bridge with an artist who "may" be poised to make one of the biggest rock comebacks of all time. ???

Title: Vh1 finds a subtle way to take back their November release date comment Post by: jd#7w on September 02, 2004, 02:15:22 PM I saw a commercial the other day on Vh1 that was like "If you enjoyed Guns n' Roses long awaited new album...Then you were probably born in 1883 and discovered time travel and and are now in year 2047."
So maybe thats just their way of telling people that it turns out they were wrong about November I dunno if this is old news and if it is I'm sorry but i just thought I'd post it. Title: Re: Vh1 finds a subtle way to take back their November release date comment Post by: smishkey on September 02, 2004, 03:08:35 PM Vh1 also has a commercial(?) that says " If you enjoyed Jessica Simpson's 'In this Skin' album, you like to talk about yoga with your mother and you have a butterfly tattoo that you pet, and also talk to" So they're just making these totally random quirky bits to throw in between commercials.
Title: VH1 commercial hints at release date Post by: Danny on September 04, 2004, 07:27:19 PM Not 5 minutes ago I saw a quick, 10-second commercial on VH1 where the following statement was posted on the screen and read out-loud by a female voice:
"If you just got done listening to Gins N' Roses highly anticipated new album..." ...then there was a few seconds of silence untill the following faded onto the screen and also read out-loud: "...then you probably just stepped out of a time-ward from the year 2047." Title: Re: VH1 commercial hints at release date Post by: Bill 213 on September 05, 2004, 12:26:26 AM what the hell has vh1 against Axl? leave the guy alone... ::) Well the old saying any press is good press has served it's purpose.? Just look at the rise in Greatest Hit's after Behind the Music was on. And for everyone that thinks this is just for GNR, well they've been doing it for other artists too. Like they made fun of Clay Aiken's measure of a man. It had "If you like clay aiken's Measure of a man".........then you've probably been searching for the true measure of a man all your life. So this isn't just something related to GNR. Title: Re: VH1 commercial hints at release date Post by: SLCPUNK on September 05, 2004, 01:11:19 AM I rag on Axl a lot, in fun, saying the album will never come out.
But I am starting to believe soon may be the word. 1) Behind the music. Take it for what it's worth, but most times this show is an hour long ad for a new album. 2) a-z show. They are bringing more interest to the group this way. 3) This ad. I saw it today too. It's odd....Why bring this up out of the blue? I think they are slowly bringing attention back to GnR because an album is gonna drop. Just my .02 cents. Title: Re: Chinese Democracy parody/commercial appears on VH1 Post by: Cowboy Buddha on September 05, 2004, 04:15:56 AM I don't think there's anything going on. I believe that VH1 is just making jokes. VH1 is trying to be more "hip" nowadays. Take for instance the commercial with the "Blinging" moutain climber. For the Gn'R shows and stories, I believe yes it's a tad bit strange that Gn'R is being talked about alot lately but I also think that there's not much to say nowadays in music. VH1 is not gonna bring up a Twista or Yellow Card BTM or A to Z because it seems that they are trying to target an older audience or non "ghettoish" audience (that's for MTV to clean up, the popular shit). Try not to get your hopes up. Just believe in it when it's Official. As for the BTM quote, just take that as a grain of salt. And Tommy, Great guy, for fuck sakes he's from Minnesota. I like the guy but Tommy knows nothing about the release of the album, by the way if you haven't picked up his solo album go get it, Stinson has some great shit in his music. Tommy has been saying "It's coming soon" or something similar to that for the past two years in every interview. He's probably saying that because he knows that people are gonna ask him that and soon could be the next few months or the next few years. So bottomline what I'm trying to say is take everything as a joke, rumor or a grain of salt, unless it's offically announced. I'm going to sleep now, anyone agree, Comments? :peace:
