Title: Axl Rose vs other vocalists
Post by: Captain Obvious on August 21, 2004, 02:01:25 AM
The other day, I decided to give Skid Row a serious listen for the first time. Even though not as good as GnR,  Bach is one crazy singer and much much much better than what I expected. THis got me thinking, in terms of vocal ability, he seemed to be right up there with Rose/Tyler, if not better. Now, I am not a musician, so I would like to get a more educated opinion.  Now, I have a question for those of you who heard Bach sing. Not counting lyrics and showmanship, just pure voice, who is more vocally talented? Now that I think about it,  Rose's voice doesn''t seem to be as "free", it seems much "tighter". Perhaps, it's just his style and he chooses not to venture into other territories, event hough he can.

Also, if you know other rock vocalists that you think are better/more unique than Rose, please share. (I think Freddie Mercury is one of the few, I always believed Layne Staley is also right up there beside Rose). I realize this is a GnR thread, I'm not trying to put anyone down, Axl is THE frontman but I'm just curious. Why the vs. thread you ask? For fun.

Gloria Bennett once said Axl Rose was one of the most gifted vocalist she's ever trained. I feel the same way when I listen to his voice. SB just screams loud. :P

I think Axl is the best.  I know for sure that he can do very much different styles. I read in an interview once that he also sang other people's melodies in the choir and to not get caught you had to be really good. So he must be good then!

But I also like Linda Perry's voice alot. She can scream like a crazy woman...... and although she doesn't sing the best music in the world, Pink's voice is really great and she can sing almost anything. She also did Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child O Mine on her tour. She is a huge GNR fan.

But there's no one IMO that can even come close to Axl....

i have also started listening to Skid Row, and i noticed the same thing. Bach is unbelievable but i agree that right now cornell has the best voice in rock.

Axl is my 'fave' frontman but in terms of comparing him to Bach i would have to say i think Bach is better.  I prefer Axl's voice but i think if you were to evaluate vocal range and all that stuff Bach would win i also feel Bach's voice has survived better than Axl's.  But hell lyrically, entertainment wise and for sheer uniqueness Axl kicks his ass.  I accept just because Axl is my fave frontman it does not make him the best vocalist he's definately up there though with the likes of Mike Patton, Chris Cornell & Dave Wyndorf.

John Lennon was the most gifted singer in the world. Just listen to "Mother" or "I Found Out" from the Plastic Ono Band album.

Yeah, I really wanna hear how Bach sings now. I imagine his voice deteriorated at least a bit. Also, it'd be cool to hear him with Slash and co. but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Who is this Mike Patton you speak of? I did a quick search and found out he is a Faith No More singer...is that the guy who was in the Epic video? ...You want it all but you can't have it...

Hmm..I will do that. Never really knew Lennon was a technically good vocalist, he always gets praised for his writing, so maybe that overshadows the fact that he can sing good as well.

Hey Captain! you should see Axl & Bach perform together at the RIP Magazine Party in 1990 really great to watch and ive heard some recent stuff by Bach and i feel it has not changed much

Mike Patton was the lead singer of Faith No More he is also in Mr. Bungle has worked with Buckethead, Dillenger Escape Plan has a band called Tomahawk as well go to the Bad Obsession section and look for the thread on Mike Patton projects or next time he's around on this board ask Arron about him he seems to adore the guy : ok:

we all have our favourite ones but John Lennon??

Freddie's voice is great, also like Bach definetely. Bono's voice is very unique also..

Judging Patton on Faith No More's Epic isn't the right way to judge him......
FNM's Angel Dust or his work in Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle, Lovage, or Dillinger Escape Plan would be better.........

I heard mike patton toma hawk open for tool, and he was terrible.
He almost got booed off the stage.

As for what other singer has a great voice, Maynard Keenan of tools voice is one of the  best

There's obviously more talented "singers" and front men with better voices, but make no mistake, in his prime Axl Rose was by far the greatest rock n roll "screecher" of all time.  The most range and sheer volume of any front man with that style I've ever heard.

Listen to yell before the solo on WTTJ. Then try to do it. Axl had a sick amount of range. Now tho Chris Cornell seems to be the popular choice on thsi thread, and I have to agree. He can do it all. Steven Tyler still has his voice after all these years. I wonder how he conditioned himself to be able to do that or if he is just lucky.

Axl is one of the greatest vocalists,  but a few have him beat.

Freddy Mercury - Even Axl would admit that.

Sebastian Bach - He has great range, more than Axl, but kind of a screamer. From a creative standpoint though, Bach still sings the exact same way he did in the `80`s. I give credit to Axl, his singing style has changed over the years, but he is still unmistakably Axl.

Axl can have is days where he has nailed it, but others where he was below par ( 2002 VMA`s)

To the other end of the spectrum....Scott Weiland can not compare. Sure he sounds great on the VR CD, but live he is awful.

Morrison

(Axl's) singing style has changed over the years, but he is still unmistakably Axl.
That is the thing with Axl's voice...
its uniqueness....

I love Axl's voice itself...
not even going into vocal range, style, etc...
Just the quality and tone of his voice itself...
When he sings of course many things come into play...
but even when he speaks.. just his natural 'speaking voice'
Something very appealing about his voice to me...
comforting... exciting... and the ladies will agree with me I'm sure...
something oh so sexy about his voice
Its personal taste and in the end it is just what appeals to the listener's ears
Axl has something that obviously appeals to a very broad range of ears...
(on top of all the other qualities that make him so exciting and entriguing)

Its a voice...
one of our most personal attributes
he's been blessed

Bruce Dickenson

Bon Scott
Tim Armstrong

Trent Reznor
Dan Weyandt
Chino Moreno

All guys I like just as much as Axl. Maybe they are not technically better in range and such but I love their voices

Robert Plant was pretty decent too, wasn't he? (I hear he still sings great) :D

He was offered the spot to sing for Inxs too after Hutchence died.....  he turned that down also

Check out their appearances on Leno or Letterman from a month or so ago. Scott just wasn`t hitting the notes. (I`m sure they`re floating around somewhere you can download) Also have seen a few clips of them live. Seems like he has more bad days than good days live.

Shannon Hoon. Tragic loss to the music world.

Robert Plant.... still sounds good, but he doesn`t have the vocal range he had back in the Zeppelin days.

as frontman, Axl Rose is one of the most genius of all time, but as a singer, I gotta make a list about "who is better":

Sebastian Bach
Bruce Dickinson
Jonnhy Solinger
Mike Pathon
Robert Plant
Steven Tyler
Jorn Land
Freddie Mercury
Justin Hawkins (I'm kidding... :hihi: )
.
.
.

But take a general vision, I think Axl is so mutch better then all of these guys I said before (except Robert Plant, Sebastian Bach, Steven Tyler, Bruce Dickinson, Freddie Mercury and Jorn Land)

If you listen to most of Mike Patton bands like Fantomas and Mr. Bungle, you can understand why Patton turned down VR.  Pattons music compared to VR is a completely diffrent monster.  Mike Pattons voice is almost an instrument in itself with some of his bands.  Its easy to think of him as a one hit wonder(epic), with a nasely voice,  but his voice has significantly changed since then.  This dudes got some fn pipes.  Check out some later FNM, as well as Tomahawk and Mr. Bungle to see his vocal progression.

Axl has the best voice of all time. And no I'm not just saying this b/c he is my favorite. He has so many different voices, no one can touch him. His vocal range is just unbelievable. I can't wait for the new album b/c Axl needs to show everyone how to belt it out right. I just cant even imagine how great his voice is gonna sound.

"On 'Chinese Democracy,' Axl delivers more soulful singing. You really get to hear some different tones in his voice which don't lend themselves to traditional bluesy riff-rock. And the lyrics are a lot more in-depth, with deeper sentiment and emotion than some of the earlier stuff."? Tommy Stinson

This quote gets me pumped for this album a lot. I cant fuckin wait.? Axl rules!!!!!

Anyway, here is my top 5:

1. W. Axl Rose
2. Robert Plant
3. Sebastian Bach
4. Steven Tyler
5. Layne Staley

Maynard James Keenan is the best singer in the world today. Bar none.

I like Mike Patton. He was great but seeing him with Tomahawk last year or the year before I was very disappointed. His music is too experimental nowadays (although I haven't heard him sing on the Fanotoma's album)

Sebastian Bach Is fucking amazing!!! He definately is not a "screetcher" his voice barely ever cracks and goes into falsceto (sp?) Amazing, amazing, amazing vocal range. I think he was actually doing opera before "the project"

Scott weiland, IMO, is the best singer/songwriter of the '90's (except maybe Cobain) and he has an awesome vocal range too, I don't know why everyone slams his talent all the time.

I hate Chris Corn-Hole I wish he would've stayed out of the music scene, he can't do anything but scream, and he is annoying when doing it.

But seeing Axl in T.O. on the last tour. He is the Man! he nailed every note. I was blown away he's the best singer (besides Maynard) I've ever seen. But you can't really compare the two of them they have totally different styles.

Bret Michaels and Poison were pretty fucking good live too!

Yeah, he can really sing with a true clean voice with amazing range. But to my surprise he can really go into that raspy screeching angry voice, which he does very very well. Last time I heard of him, he was doing broadway.

Maybe he is't given enough recognition here but I have to admit, I just can't get into his voice. He might be talented, but to me, he sounds very unoriginal and bland.

I've been dling FNM, and some of these songs are awesome. Thanks! "Easy" is a great song. Never really listened to Tool or Perfect Circle, other than what's on the radio. Can anyone suggest the best songs?

Also, anyone ever listened to Mark Lanegan? I have only heard his duet with Layne Staley and liked it alot.  If anyone's a fan, can you suggest some of your favorites?

That's cool, its your opinion. personally I've liked him since day 1. From 'core' to his solo stuff to all the cameo's he does to VR. I just think he is amazing. The really great thing is he doesn't just contribute to the vocals but the music in general. (I read an interview w/ Slash and Duff and it said he pulled the songs apart and restructured them for his lyrics). I know its not the place to start arguing about this, but, Madagas there are not many musicians in the '90's with Scott's talent and then it is all a matter of personal opinion. I think he rules. After G'n'R "died" in the early '90s STP and Tool were my fav bands. Hell Tool may even put on a better live show than G'n'R. STP Fucking rocked live too!

Really the way to go about it is to listen to entire albums because Maynard creates an atmosphere for each album that can't be broken down into singles. thats why you don't hear more than 1 or 2 singles from each album. You have to listen to the entire albums to fully appreciate him. My sugestions for albums to listen to are, ALL OF THEM!!! Maybe not opiate though. it's short and kinda rough to listen to. But after you've heard the rest of the the albums you'll wanna hear Opiate then you'll appreciate that album more.? ?:) Maynard Rules : ok:

?nema is probably my favorite Tool song I'd also recommend Hooker With A Penis, 46 and 2,  Lateralus, Sweat, and Hush. Opiate is their best album
3 Libra's is my favorite A Perfect Circle song others worth checking out are Renholder, Judith, Magdalena. I don't have their new album so I can't really say anything about it

I've never heard anyone sing in a way that I get goosebumps everytime I hear the song. It's amazing!!!! He's amazing.....

I love Lanegan's work - I think Troubled Times by the Screaming Trees is Mark at his best

Nice to hear you like Patton in Faith No More -
Try getting:

Mr. Bungle Travolta (or quote unqoute - same song)
Tomahawk - God Hates a Coward
Lovage-Book Of The Month
Faith No More- King For A Day
Faith No More - Gentle Art Of Making Enemies
Faith No More - Kindergarten

Great Patton Material
And that's just an introduction....I travel to see Patton whenever possible - it is my real big musical addiction
