Tom Waits announces record details

Tom Waits has announced that he is to release his new album, 'Real Gone', on 4 October.

The follow-up to 2002's 'Alice' and 'Blood Money', 'Real Gone' was produced by Waits and his wife and collaborator Kathleen Brennan.

Waits describes the album as "a homogeneous concoction of mood elevators, mind liberators and downers, an alchemical universe of rattling chains, oscillating rhythms and nine-pound hammers".

Among the musicians joining Waits on the album are longtime bassist Larry Taylor, former Guns 'n' Roses drummer Brain Mantia, Primus bassist Les Claypool and guitarist Marc Ribot, who returns for his first full collaboration with Waits since 1985's seminal 'Raindogs' album.

fyi, fortus and brain will be touring together with BT starting around august/september. I think that should be an encouraging sign, no?

True or not does anyone think that these guys have just grown tired of doing absolutely nothing. I mean Brain said his stuff was recorded back in like 00-01. So he has been sitting around for the better part of 3-4 years doing nothing but side stuff. Maybe he is just ready to move on. If this is true the only person to blame is Axl, same thing as with Bucket. If you bring these guys in to be in a band, you've got to expect they are going to want to play the shit they wrote. Telling them to wait years upon years while you continue to screw around is not the best way to run a band as evidence to the fact we still have no new album after all this time.

Josh is playing with the Vandals on the Warped Tour (he was quoted in some news article about that tour), but maybe that's just a temp. gig for him.

I thought Brain is still "on contract" like Buckethead whereas Josh signed out on amiable terms, apparently.

Who cares if he's in the band or not - they can just get another - there up to 3 all ready with CD, one more really ain't gonna matter.

if they are contracted for the next five years, I will believe brain and bucket are still in gnr. If they are running out their contract, that's a different story. From day one I believed brain and bucket were a unit; they couldn't work on their side projects with a divide between them over gnr. Doesn't mean any of them are out, but it makes you wonder if they have any intention of answering to Axl's call when the time comes.

Wouldn`t put much faith in that article. Its not like it was Rolling Stone or a a more credible source. Was just some music journalist who wrote it. He probrally knows a lot less about GNR than we do, since only the hardcore fans have any idea the state of affairs in the world of GNR. He probrally assumed Brain was no longer in GNR because they have not been in the media  since the `02 tour meltdown.   :smoking:

"he?s still recording vocals..."
"they?re still put some final touches..."
"yes, I?m still in GNR..."

do you think tommy?s answer averytime is "yes, I?m STILL in GNR..." ?
"I?m in GNR" is so much better

some sentences to me seams that anytime robin, tommy, brain ... could get away, I don?t know why anymore

Why would you say he's out of gnr? He is just worked on the cd. I believe he has worked with Tom before. They all are working on other things. They do have to make a pay check, you know. By the way check out the Tom waites cd. I have some of his stuff. He's really cool.

Title: brain still in gnr..axl's managment--
Post by: mikegiuliana on August 05, 2004, 09:54:06 AM
Madison posted this to anyone that cares

I don't like to bother Merck very often about rumors, but the rumor about Brain leaving seemed to be taking on a life of its own. So I contacted him, and he confirmed that Brain is still in GNR.
Here's his reply:

"Brain is putting percussion on the album as I write. It is correct that he has played on Tom Waits album in his spare time but GN'R is his priority."

"Brain is putting percussion on the album as I write."

... "as I write"??
So much for a nov. album release...if the record is not even done in august, there's no way it can be released in nov. 2004.

Title: Re: Brain an ex gnr member?
Post by: AdZ on August 05, 2004, 11:22:48 AM
It could still be out.

This is a bad example but on the last blink 182 album they did the percussion very quickly and it was released about 2 and a half months later I think.

Title: Re: Brain an ex gnr member?
Post by: Will on August 05, 2004, 11:33:33 AM
Yeah technically it could, but I don't have a feeling it will be out. When I'm talking about Brain and the percussion part, I'm basically saying it could mean some other band member could need to go back and lay down some bass or guitar tracks or whatever...then they need to master the CD, send it to a CD-making plant, prepare everything for the promotion, etc.

Title: Re: Brain an ex gnr member?
Post by: AdZ on August 05, 2004, 11:36:26 AM
prepare everything for the promotion, etc.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were planning this while band members were tweaking things.

Percussion is different to drumming.. he could be adding weird stuff.. like cannons.

Don't forget about the mixing of the album.  That very well could be a long and arduous process.

You can add percussion to a track as a part of the mixing process, i.e, "I like the sound and the levels here, but can we throw a garbage-truck-backing-up-type-beeping between those two drumbeats?"
You could during mixing just before mixing down.  I do this type of thing with commercials, usually as the final step before mixing down and saving a master.

Yeah, I kinda assumed the mixing process was done for a good amount of tracks already, but you never know. I guessed they could have already mixed a few tracks and do some tweakings on different tracks.

This is a bad sign to me, first the thing with brain, I mean how can the drums not be finished yet, this has been taking to long for one album... Second I don't know what a hairs breathd is with tommy... I know it's soon, but soon is like years with this groups,,, Hope forthe best I guess...ANother thing is no one ever talks about a video or single, this stuff should be done months before the album for publicity..

Just out of cuirosity...what has U2 done yet to promote their album? If it's supposedly due in November, why no 'official' release date, single, or tour announcement yet? There's still some time before them  ad flyers need to be printed. I'm giving it a few more weeks before I get into panic or pissed off mode (if I do at all).
