 :)Even though i was totally traumatized at the Buckehead concert last night, it was cool to see Brain up close and personal.  He is an amazing drummer, and I think he is much better than Matt Sorum. What does everyone else think? I just want to start a discussion, not get anyone upset and I am in a lot of pain right now so please be nice to me. :beer:

I havent heard the new CD yet....Ive only seen him play on Guns live and he was good but id say Matt. :peace:

i think Brain Offers a lot more than sorum. He plays just about anything and plays it very well. he has an excellent sense of groove. i think he can bring things to a band that sorum could never bring cuz Sorum, even thought a great musician, is just  a Rock N' Roll drummer and i haven't seen him play much else. and ever since its five o'clock somewhere came out i haven't really listened to any of his stuff that was actually amazing. he has some very nice work in VR; but i still think it's not as good as his previous work.
as for brain... he plays with primus, that's another league on it's own. he's in the band cuz of Josh Freese recomended him when he had to leave so if he thinks Brain is good for the job... who am i to think otherwise.
but then again i don't know much about drumming. i just like brain better.

P.S. the intro to YCBM is different cuz brain wants it different. i think that it wouldn't surprise anyone to assume that he can actually play that intro just like sorum. any professional drummer can...  actually, any drummer who puts his mind into it. but since Brain has the chance to create something new i think he chose not to copy the intro and twist it a little. some may hate it, some may like it... but it's just his aproach to the song

I'm biased as to having seen sorum 4 times, but sorum wins

I've been playing drums for 15 years and have seen Brain since he was in the limbomaniacs, allthe way through Primus and then with GNR.  Brain destroys Sorum.  Matt's solid as hell but Brain is by far the best drummer that Axl has ever had behind him.  At the Vegas show he played the end of Paradise City one handed.  On the live version of Tommy the Cat with Primus he does an extended solo and starts this amazing fill, when the camera pans behind the set it shows he's doin it with one hand while drinking water.  Matt Sorum is exceptional but Bbrain is way way better.  The YCBM intro that Brain does is acctually harder because of the way he plays it, if you watch him do it you'll see.  Musically, before the exit of Buckethead, the new version of GNR was a better musical cast that just needed some more live shows to gel the way the old band did.  Hopefully this fuckin cd comes out so they can get on the road like they should and come together the way they should.  Check out some Primus videos, even if you know nothing about drumming, you can see Brain';s technical skill.

I've taken a liking to Brain, i was never fond of Sorum.

Hell yeah but Freese isnt gonna sit by waiting, he's a great studio drummer, and is excellent in APC.

Matt's also played in the cult so that's why i say Matt

I have to say for all the talk of Brain being better he is yet to prove it in his stage show and in the recent recordings.  Some of his ending are dubious to say the least, in the live shows in 2002 axl didnt seem to know at time when to drop his hands at end of some songs! His interpretation of of some of steven adlers grove is nowhere nearly as good..the adler trademark bass drum/cymbal triples are gone and replace by a few snare hits...sounds like crap.  Most of the new songs keep the same double beat throughout..very boring and sounds like a drum machine.  Many people slate guitarist etc but I think the drummer is the man who hasnt raised the stakes.  Matt sorum, was never a fan so nothing more to add on him.

I've been playin drums for 11 years and when I started all I played was GN'R. Matt was definately my drum idol. Compared to steven and Brain I think Matt kicks the fuck outta all of em now. The way Matt changed the Drumming for the AFD songs was way better then Brain and Steven. I found Matt more interesting behind a kit compared to the other 2. Even at the VR show I went to, Matt played a drum solo, much smaller then he did when he was in GN'R and without double kickers and it still went off.
Even tho he is an uppity prick, he rules at drumming.

I would say matt but thats unfair cause I havent heard much about brian, only a couple of concerts.

just saw the video were brain does his thing. nothing special about it. i'm a drummer for 14 years years now and that's very easy stuff he plays right there. matt is way better imo. he can play great and original drum solos and plays very loud and tight to the rythm.
not that brain is a bad drummer though, but sorum kicks his ass.

yeah dude! i think that comparisson is thebest way to describe the way that brain plays the drums.... if you see his face, he does it with passion, with rage...

i watched the paris 92 video. i like matt more cuz he is a rock drummer. too much funk in brains drumplay for me.

if you think Brain cant handle YCBM your're crazy he just play's it different, just like with brownstone everyone makes a big deal about that, he is just mixing shit up a bit

Anyways I haven't heard too much of Brain. He was good at RIR 3 but damn that YCBM intro...bleck. If he can play it "as good or better than Sorum" as everyone is saying, then he needs to get off his ass and do it!

OK,   Matt Sorum is the most succesful GNR drummer ever (made most records,  done biggest tours..),  now plays with Slash and Duff in VR.

and whoever says his sound sucks, listen to Primus - Antipop, the drums sound friggin great on it! you can hear the hi-hat (and everything else) so perfect, I get chills from the guys hi-hat techniques.

Edit:  just saw the Praxis thing you posted....a-friggin-mazing! better than anything Ive ever seen Sorum do! does so much with so little, it's a gift...Brain = amazing! :yes:

Technically blaahblaah.. I prefer Matt more 'cause he simply sounds better. I don't care about those technical things..

mmm I dont like Brain, and the way he plays some original GNR songs, he just screws those songs,  and YCBM intro sucks BIG TIME! thanks to Mr. Brain.

I would definetly take Matt.  I think he gave a shit about the band and he seems like cool guy and  good drummer.  I don't think Brain gives a shit about GN'R.  Some of the comments he makes are absolutely stupid.  Fuck Steven, he sucks all around.

he messed it up in Rio I guess. even though I think it was more Buckethead and Fincks fault cos I think they played it too long and Brain had to stall.
