Title: Anything other than Rock you like
Post by: MadmanDan on July 15, 2004, 04:27:53 PM
OK,it's clear that everyone on this board, including me, is a huge rock fan. But what non-rock bands/artists do you like?

Me,I like pop-rock artists like Robbie Williams or The Corrs and,of course the legendary Frank Sinatra

This is like the musical version of the Confessions thread  :hihi:

okay, I admit to listening to old R&B when I'm in the car.  Stuff like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Jackson 5, etc.

What always strikes me about old r&b is that the vocals are so beautiful, they almost dont need any musical accompaniment to the song.  Their voice alone is enough to make it worthwhile.   No electric guitar in it, but still some undeniably good music.

i like tonnes of old rap. beastie boys, run dmc, nwa etc.  run dmc loved their guitars though......so it's heavily rock influenced.

i love tonnes of reggae too. something about bob marley songs.......what is there not to like? Branched from that is ska stuff i like........like sublime and maybe rancid.

i dunno thats all i can think of so far.

anyone looking for a good new rap album get blackalicious - blazing arrow. Now thats a good rap album. But now rap is tarnished forever thanks to wankers like 50cent etc

"rock" is becoming a very general term referring to music that isn't necessarilly done to please the MTv audience, actually valuable n' played on actual instruments by real musicians. GN'R's music should definteley influence in having more of an open mind to every non-commercial music style.

I listen to every type of music I guess (except the MTV/radio friendly crap which I’m non-interested in). The only type of music I can think of that really doesn’t fit the sorta standards of “rock” music is WORLD music. The rest even if not for being theoretical goes with the same values, ideas and all that.

If I'm honest, I'm listening to Rock music less and less nowadays. I'm just getting into 60's and 70's Soul, R&B and Funk (e.g. James Brown, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Parliament) and also Jazz (only Miles Davis so far, mind) and even Rap (Outkast, Eminem, N*E*R*D and others who steer clear of the cliched 'bling bling' and gangsta imagery and the hackneyed beats).

Of course, I listen to a lot of artists that are often called Rock but who have actually made relatively few out and out 'Rock' songs. (E.g. Elton John, David Bowie, The Beatles, Prince, Roxy Music).

Good point, and in stark contrast to modern 'R n' B' (note the inverted commas) which has increasingly become a show case for how many audio pyrotechnics a producer can cram into one song.

I don't mind Robbie Williams.. he's a good entertainer and some of his songs I can listen to when they come on the radio. Though judging from his albums, there seems to be a massive gap in quality between his hits and fillers.

I'm a Moby fan.. I like the chill-out stuff.. I saw him live in Sydney last year and it was an awesome night.. Moby was on the guitar all night with a band backing up all the electronic sounding stuff.. sounded awesome.. esp. the James Bond Theme.. it actually rocked!

Yeah,I've noticed that too about Robbie Williams. Good singles, mediocre albums!  But some of his songs are really good and he rules live

Other than Rock, I like barroque. I also like Ravel, Erik Satie, Debussy and Stravinsky the great dissonance, Richard Wagner, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, and so on.

Above all, Ethnic music (like Indonesian-Gamelan, Tuva In Mongolian Hoomii singing or Arabic, Spanish guitar) and religious music of the World are the best of classics.

The main genre I like other than rock is classical (Clockwork Orange is probably my favourite movie).  So I love Wagner and Mozart, and of course a little bit of the old Ludwig Van.  I love listening to that music while driving...there's something simeltaneously soothing and exciting about those huge soundscapes they create.

I used to be a lot more close-minded - "hey, turn that shit off!  Why don't you guys listen to some REAL music like Guns N' Roses?!"  But now I listen to things with an open mind - a good song is a good song.  So I like a lot of older pop stuff by Michael Jackson (say what you will, that guy is a pop genius), Prince, and ABBA.  I listen to some old school rap like Run DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, 2Pac, and I like what Eminem and 50 Cent are doing.  I like listening to jazz occasionally, even if I don't recognize any single artists at all.  Jazz to me is just background music.  Blues I'm not too big on, since all the songs sound pretty much the same.

I like Elvis and Buddy Holly is one of the songwriters I most admire.
