Title: Rewind with Iann Robinson, 6/3/04 - A little VR mention
Post by: jarmo on June 11, 2004, 10:05:28 AM
Here's a little VR mention from http://www.metal-sludge.com/RewindIannRobinson.htm

13. Who's the most overrated band today and why?

---

I'd like to cut the hands off of everybody in Velvet Revolver to make sure they never make music again, ever.

Once again I have to post one of these because you guys missed it and somebody decided to e-mail me the link.....

I guess you will find, Dave, that it's because we are all dumbfounded as to why the guy said it.  He gave no reasons.  And earlier on in the interview, he bigs up some of the shittiest metal bands ever... so it's obvious that is whole 'thing' is to be a fuckin ass to everyone.  Which is pretty cool and funny... but this quote doesn't really mean much.

If he had said a reason, perhaps more discussion would have occurred...

now.... why was it you posted?

Could it be as simple as the guy just doesn't like VR?  :o

I wonder why he dislikes them so much, but with no reason given, what do you expect?

well I have the album now..bought it about 3 hours ago..

and I have to say that I'm so glad that the band made few awesome songs like Slither, Fall To Pieces, Set Me Free, Loving The Alien, YGNR. I'm so glad that no one didn't cut their wrist..

I guess that the guy hasn't even listened the whole album..

Robinson is an opinionated guy, very specific in his tastes, what's good and bad and whatnot.

His "Point/Counterpoint" with Gideon Yago concerning GNR was brutal as well a couple years back.  He's also voiced his disgust with STP/Weiland for years so this was hardly unexpected...

no replies to this thread? Interesting.

Dave can't understand why VR fans aren't crying like a bunch of little pussies ala the usual nitwit Axl fans crying everytime a negative mention of Axl is made.  See the FooFighters at Rio thread to see them in action.

NO I just find it funny that jarmo had to post this and not anyone else, its just funny that VR fans jump on stuff like this when it has to do with Axl.
That is my point. And again why is someone bringing up Axl in a VR thread? Hmmm

That guy called Alice In Chains songs lame so that automatically puts his musical credibility in the negatives.

I think there isnt outrage over this because nobody respects Ian's possition. He's an mtv gimmick adn nothing more. He is as controvesial and opinionated as mtv tells him to be. His opinion really doesnt affect anything. I doubt kdis that watch mtv will read this and go, " wow, the bald fat nerd covered head to toe in star wars tatoos is cool, I should take his advice about music" come on.

Godsmack are a silly bunch, especially Sully Erna, that guy has a Napoleon Complex like I've never seen. He actually takes what he does seriously, what a joke. I'll grab some two bit singer from up north and have him do lame Alice In Chains type songs, it's not that hard.

He didn't say AIC songs were lame, just that Godsmack are doing lame AIC sounding songs...

Wrong.

Iann was fired from MTV for his opinions/viewpoints and general opposition to how the channel has become.

To say "nobody respects Iann's position" is absurd.  The guy has loads
of cred in the metal community.

Sure the comments about VR were harsh, so what?  It's his opinion.

There isn't any outrage over his comments because what he said isn't a big deal. I agree with many of his comments and happen to disagree with this one and a few others. It's no big deal.

the world makes sense again...

And if any of you want to delete this, Dave specifically asked why no there were no replies and i am answering him. If you think that my post is "off topic", then so is his question.

Yeah, we all know your obsession with Dave.

All I know about that Iann guy is that he was on some Nirvana special and he was saying his generation needed a voice and that voice was Kurt Cobain. I think he also said there was no interesting music in 1991 before "Nevermind" came along.....

This means exactly what it says. The scentence "Bob is doing lame AIC type songs" means just that....that Bob is doing AIC-type songs, which are lame.
This is different from saying that Bob is doing lame  AIC sounding songs.

I'm not sure what he meant to say but that sentence definitely does not mean that Godsmack is doing a lame job at perfroming AIC songs.

Nice and obvious eh?

No..

The adjective "lame" is describing Godsmacks "AIC sounding" songs...Not AICs.  So the context implies that theyre lame because theyre derivitive - not because AIC mad "lame-sounding" songs.  Maybe the transcriber should have put a comma there to help people out.

The guy never said "AIC sounding". Lame could equally describe AIC's type of songs. Any english professors here? Haha just kidding...I'm not going to argue about this...I'm just  going to go listen to some AIC

The guy knows his way around a good sound bite, so apparently he doesn't have to provide reasons for all his opinions.  To me, he's just another one of those "hippier-than-thou" metal fans who claim that Metallica sold out after the Black Album.  Who cares what this geek has to say about the Velvets?

Yeah after Justice for all they sold out. And if you listen to interviews about St Anger they sold out any little bit of anything they had left.

Wow, I'm amazed to hear that coming from a GN'R fan.
Most GN'R fans I know are pretty broad-minded when it comes to musical styles and tastes.

I'm a big Metallica fan, I love them just as much as I love GN'R, and while I don't argue that Metallica definitely changed their style; exploring different musical ground is hardly what I call "selling out".

I suppose next you'll be saying GN'R sold out on the UYI albums, or that Axl is selling out because he wants GN'R to remain modern...
