Post by: norway on June 07, 2004, 03:00:04 AM

If you seen the belgium bootleg 02 you know what i'm talking about.
It's high pitched and raspy... IT ROCKS!!!

He is just ripping on the vocals on this one.
I love it.

What's your favorite vocal moment in the new gnr?

This is why I think his voice is better now.  It's the best of both worlds.  He can still do the shredded scream voice, but now he can also tap into his sick upper range, and hit it all with power and clarity.  Amazing.

Some people are totally clueless about Axl's voice.  He is better now.

The screams - yes, awesome!  : ok:  : ok: On WTTJ & LALD

Couple stand out moments for me are HOB The Blues
"What I thought was true before were lies I couldn't see   What I thought was beautiful is only memories"

The way he singed that part at the HOB just pierces me and draws out this ache....  much like some of the notes Slash hits during his solos...

And oh my god...     Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Madison Square Garden *tears*
I was literally in fuckin' awe - he sounded like AN ANGEL... like an angel I tell ya.
Mother- fuckin' orgasmic I tell ya! Like being lifted off your feet - fucking levitated! and sustained outside yourself.  Fuckin' awesome live experience.
Mercy   - Axl has a beautiful, beautiful voice  : ok:
And I believe 100% no matter what is on that album - Axl's voice on it is going to be at the epitomy of his career.  (not sure about my grammer on that one - but, ya get what I'm saying  :D )

listen to the blues from boston, a good chunck of that song axl has the rasp.

Axl may well have developed tones and styles that move forward from AFD style rasp and growl, but absolutely no one  with any sense of logic or actual ears can say that he has the same level of growl or strength in his voice after listening to 2002, compared to 1987 - 1991.

It is simple. I still love the guy, but people like dave who use the ...' oh he was using his...ahem...'touring voice' are just making lame excuses. Axl Rose simply no longer has the passionate voice of an angry young man who doesnt give a damn....cos he's a middle aged man with lotsa money who cares WAY too much about what people think, and is less sure of himself  at 40 than at 20.

Here is something I noticed about Axl and his voice.  I have heard all the bootlegs from the tour and saw him in Boston.
First off, hearing him live his voice is much stronger than hearing him on the bootlegs. Bootlegs don't do his voice justice.  My brother who went with me to the gnr show in Boston heard some of the bootleg versions in the car on the way to the show and like you said disco his voice was not as strong, but after hearing the whole show it said how much better and stronger it was.  So don't go by the bootlegs because they don't pick up how strong his voice is.

Also, Axls voice is much more prominent on the newer songs than the AFD songs. The band also rocks out more to the newer songs than the AFD songs.  I think Axl and the band are bored with the old songs and much more enjoy playing the CD songs.

If you want  to go by bootlegs, listen to riyadh from HOB, his voice is amazing on that song.

When I saw GN'R in Toronto Canada in 2002.

"All the love in the world couldn't save you or the innocence inside.....You know I tried so hard to make you ooohohhohh....OHHHHOHHHHH TO MAKE YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND!!!!".

At the begining of The Blues.....Man if you guys haven't heard it get the bootleg(download etc) and listen.....At that part the crowd give Axl a well deserved applause.

Im not bagging the guy, cos i Think what he has lost vocally he will most likely make up for lyrically and being willing to experiment to more extremes musically.

But I dont think bootlegs have changed in a way that he used to sound quite awesome a lot of the time...just so powerful and wild to nowadays where most of the time he sounds chipmunkesque....and often vocally weak to the point where his normal speaking voice is louder than his singing.

I think comparing old bootlegs to new ones is a better measure than being at a loud concert with god knows what effects, to judge his voice.......and remember the vma's??....to me at no point after the initial scream did he sound anywhere near good, whereas In the 87 version of jungle at the MTV awards he sounded mindblowing the whole time....and it all seemed so effortless.

Like I have said before, Axl has always been hit or miss live.
Just take the toyko DVD vs the France PPV show.
Axl sounds great for the PPV but like shit for the dvd.
The only thing that really matters is how axl sounds on the album.
Listen to him at the end of the SCOM big daddy version or those short studio clips from that ad. Axl sounds great.

now that is spine tingling, eh?  : ok:

I liked the voice he used in Silkworms.... kinda like the Down on the Farm Voice... but much more nasty-like

Ryiah is a great, great showcase for Axl's vocal strength - good pick Dave  : ok:

What's your favorite vocal moment in the new gnr?

At the 2002 VMA's during Paradise City Axl lets out an angry "YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!" and follows up with a "LOOK OUT!"  Both sounded very old school Axl and still gives me goose bumps.

Me too....

The "new" voice is fantastic....

I like his voice back in 88 and 93.....

92 suck most of the time.....

Title: Axl has never been great live
Post by: JamieG on June 07, 2004, 07:17:38 PM
Dave is right, the only thing that matters is how he sounds on the albums and he sounds great. He's the best because his voice is so unique.

But the truth is he's never sounded great live. I totally disagree with people who say is voice isn't nowhere as good as it was years ago, implying that it was great back then.

It wasn't, it never was even during the prime years of GNR. He's fine and does a great job when he sings the softer, slower parts of songs like Madagascar, but the raspiness that makes his voice so great on the records, isn't there live. Take a song like Yesterdays, the rasp he has in that song, I think it's impossible for him to sound the same live.

Title: The Blues live -- what is going on?
Post by: JamieG on June 07, 2004, 07:26:16 PM
Since we're talking about live performances here, I'll ask a question I've been wondering about since I got the downland.

On the download of The Blues that I have, I think it's from Rio (but it's been so long I forget).....in the middle of that song after the little solo, you hear someone, and I think it's Axl, yell out in a normal speaking voice "OK, NEVERMIND!" and then like a second later Axl continues singing "Don't know what I should do..."

Does anyone have a clue what is going on there and what that was about? The voice sounds like Axl's normal voice, but he sings like a second after he says that, so I'm not sure. And it certainly doesn't sound like it's part of the song, so is he talking to someone on stage and didn't realize that the mic picked it up?

It just sounds strange when you listen to it and I've always wondered what that was about.

What hapened there was that Dizzy?s  piano was too high, so Axl made signs to the mixing guy so that he lowered the piano. But the mixing guy didn?t understand that and made nothing about it, so Axl says :Ok, nevermind!!And then you see Dizzy laughing!!
That?s what hapened there

Ah, OK, thanks. I figured it was something like that. I'm impressed by how quickly he was able to revert to his singing voice.

It's funny when the only thing you have of a song is the bootleg and that's what you always listen to, because you get used to the way it sounds. When I saw them live, and they did the Blues, it's like hey, the "OK, NEVERMIND!" part is missing!

Slashly, thanks for explaining that this time. About once a month I have to post the same explanation... but people insist to say it's because of his ear piece (which happens in the begginig). Anyway...

About Axl?s voice, just listen, and then tell me what you think:

Knockin on Heaven?s Door, Osaka - His screams by the end. Just U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E how he hits those notes!

Madagascar, Osaka - "Forgive them they teared down my soul, and bless them that they might grow old, ooohh a dream that?s forgetten may know, that it's never, oooh ooh, tooooo late..."

Madagascar, Albany - "If we ever find it?s true, that we had the strength to chooooooo oh ooooose. I?m free of all the chainssss we had together, oooh ooohh"

It had to do with his ear piece. The piano was too high in his ear, he wanted it turned down.

Sorry Dave, but I insist, if you watch RIR video, you'll see it's got nothing to do with the ear piece.

Earpiece beggining.

Piano after.

Had a thought  -  how the fuck to you like that he sounded so fucking good they couldn't believe it was live!  they said (some/Howard Stern did anyway I believe) that he was lip synching!  hahaha!

I believe we are going to be blown away by the studio vocals...

The earpiece is to hear his own voice in all that gig level volume. This way will the singer keep in tune. (Johhny rotten played without earpice)  ;)

Axl sounds better on the screams nowadays compared to the 90's. But he has lost some of the full time rasp in the non stop singing, anyway hi IS better from an neutral view too.

We all know the studio version of ycbm. He fucke up this song live in the 90's and did it better justice in 02.

He lost some and has gained some.

ps. Belgia 02 bootleg rocks the most

All I want to say about this is:Listen to the Hollywood Rose demos and early Guns N' Roses demos, ofcourse his voice has changed,if you have sang as much as Axl has on tours it will change the voice, ofcourse he is also older, but I think his voice still sounds great

I lot like the past better, but noone can his voice is gone worse.

Listen to axl in belgia 02. In the "you know were you are"-part or outa get me.

He still has his raspy, highpitched wrencing way of singing

AND IT ROCKS!!!
