Post by: Bravefish on May 17, 2004, 10:30:26 AM
Right I downloaded the show, it cae in .shn format but then i decomped it into .wav and that is how it is stored (no loss of quality) on my comp. I am willing no prob to covert it to mp3 obv there will be some loss of qual but the show is awesome. Velvet revolver are too good.

I am willing to send it to someone who will post it online for others to download.

OMG! these songs are great!! This is one of the worst quality boots I've heard, but you can tell the songs are great! I was naturally worried that they would be middle of the road rockers but they aren't! Every song I've heard so far has an amazing melody and solo! I've only gotten through a couple of songs so far..The quality gets better later on!

How about some song descriptions, comparisons, and lyric excerpts to tide over those of us who wont be hearing it soon?

Did you decide not to download it too?

I want it to be like the first time I heard Illusions.  I want to be awestruck like I was...how many years ago?  It's been a loooooooong time.  :)

Actually Ive got somebody downloading it for me (slow connection  :'( )

But no, Im not listening to the new songs either.  Im only listening to everything Ive heard already (covers, "SMF," "Slither").  Maybe the first 20 seconds of "Suckertrain Blues".  ;D

I also cant remember the last time I heard a CD Ive anticipated greatly without giving in and listening to it before the release, so Ive also decided to listen to Contraband on June 8th.

...Although I just realized Ill be hearing it in 11 days when they come to Philly... ...at least theyll make their impression live and loud, and not on a poor-quality bootleg heard over a computer.

Yes you can: here's a link where you can download a plug-in for Windows Media Player: http://www.rit.edu/~cxp6014/Download.html (http://www.rit.edu/~cxp6014/Download.html)

I might try to describe the songs later on tonight (I'm @ 69% of the whole show right now and I still have 90 min. to go), if it's not already done.

If you install the plug-in I gave the link for, it should work with Windows Media Player. There's also a plug-in for Winamp.

Im listening to this shows "Slither" (Thanks to the Top-Hatted One  )

First off, it should be said that the sound quality here makes the El Rey bootleg look a studio recording.

Its similar to the El Rey version in that it has the post-solo breakdown...unfortunately, it doesnt have the El Rey finale.  Still sounds like a great performance from everybody, and a very good rendition of the song - but the El Rey "Slither" still stands as the best live version of the song.

I just finished the download.

I can't really give a detailed review of every song because as you said I don't think the sound doesn't do the songs justice. We can barely hear the vocals...but I'm not gonna complain because that's the first VR bootleg so it's still pretty cool! 8)

The guitar is awesome...I don't really dig Weiland's voice though.

Great to hear that the guitar sounds awesome. : ok:

How would you compare the riffage/solos though? Is it similar to AFD or more UYI style?

I've just heard it, sounds really good! These guys rocks! Loved all the new songs, esp sucker train blues and falling to pieces (the intro is with some flat guitar, but it goes heavy later).
I'll let the window in bit torrent open for, at least, tomorrow morning.  ;)

Don't let the 1st song fool you. The quality gets better after Suckertrain blues.

My fav out of the newer rockers so far in order:
1. Do it for the kids
2. Headspace
3. Fall To Pieces
4. Illegal I
5. Big Machine
6. Suckertrain

Falling to pieces and you got no right may become my fav songs from the album but with ballads I need to hear the studio versions.

I wish they would play Superhuman, Spectacle, Dirty Lil Thing, You got no right and Loving the alien(sometimes) but they are problably gonna wait til the cd gets released so that contraband is completely spoiled.

Hard to compare...I would say it depends on the song. Some of them are more in the AFD style (but an updated version, I don't really know how to explain) and others in the UYI style. I think Slash totally owns the show.
I would like to add I really like Weiland's voice on "Falling To Pieces" (this song is really cool). "Do It For The Kids" is a good song too I think. They totally rock on the GN'R's cover, especially It's So Easy and Brownstone. It sounds like a good live band, I'm still not sure if I'm gonna get the album but I probably will just to have the songs with a studio sound.

Well at least that leaves a few new songs to be surprises when you get the album!

Heres my initial review/reaction....

Overall its not bad. The funny thing when they play the cover songs from stp and gnr they sound more alive than when they play their own songs. Especially crackerman.

As for the new material:
Not bad. Most of it rocks, but nothing special.

I wont do song by song because I have only heard each song about 2 times. So its not fair. But here is my overall reaction....

The songs that stand out initially are
headspace,ftp, illegal I, and big machine(even though it could come right off any stp album}

Now to the hyped Fall to Pieces- it sounds nothing like scom. in any way. Its a pretty good song. NOt a classic liek everyone is saying. I want to hear the studio version of it though. SLahs is excellent on the guitars. SO you will get great guitars. Idk its def not what everyone is making it out to be though. Ill check it out again

The absolute standout for me was illegalI. I think it is better than ftp or slither. It sounds a lot like zeppelin and janes addiction. Very cool song. great song. I wish the album was more liek this. The song is very loose but tight. Great vibe. definately check this out and dload it

For those who like slither, you will more than likely enjoy the album. For the people who didnt think slither was great then the album will be a downer most likely. Because slither sounds a lot better than most of the new songs they played except for the songs i mentioned above. Descent rockers but nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing unique pretty simple. Musically it sounded pretty good. LIke slash has his great solos and moments in some of the songs. Same with duff and matt. Weiland is good overall its just that if your looking for inspiration or that kind of stuff this isnt the band. Weilands chorus and stuff are good but the verses are average at best. Nothing that fires u up liek the ending to "coma"

As for that "sleazy, straight foward rock" that the band always talks about....Except for suckertrain blues which is like old school aerosmith...nothing comes close to being grimy or sleazy. Its just reg rock.

If i had to say what they sounded more like..i would say def. stp....overall its good. it rocks. some cool songs and parts. but its the same vibe for most of the songs. I read in a review how each song sounds the same and thats correct. There all the same style. Should be a fun album to keep us busy..till the bigs boys come out and play...plus there entertaining live.....

hope this helped...check out crackerman as well. they fukin ripped that song.

Headspace is single material

it could be the 3rd single after Fall to pieces i think
