Title: To the fools who compare Gn'R and VR
Post by: Thorned Rose on May 12, 2004, 10:34:11 AM
I think it is a total waste of time. We have heard 2 studio songs from these people. All the songs enlisted on Contrband have been written by Weiland... obviously IZZY wasn't good enough or they are saving them.

You can't compare these bands guys... they are different bands with 3 of them from the other.

Slither is equal to Nightrain or My Michelle.

It isn't a great song but it is a good song with a good chorus that is effective.

Slither is #4 in the U.S. on the Modern Rock Chat... soon it will climb into the top 10 on the top 40 I'm sure.

You Got No Right sounds excellent. All good reviews... guys that bash VR... stop please.

VR is the reverse of the new Guns N Roses. Sorry but it is true.

Forget Gn'R until the death on the leaves. VR is active and well. Plus they are not a flop. Contraband will debut #1 for sure.

VR is what Gn'R could've been.

Shouts to D!!!

I don't think that Weiland wrote all the songs as you said   ;)
he just wrote melodies and lyrics as far as I know

Weiland didnt write all the songs.  Some songs were already written and he wrote the lyrics and some melodies. He also wrote some songs with the band. I

I do think the album is going to be very successful. I don't think it is very likely that a bands first album reaches number one though.

And I do agree that Slither is Equal to or better than some tunes on Appetite and definately better than alot of Illusions & Lies tunes. But I am not sure why you would be comparing when the title of your topic was "To the fools who compare Gn'R and VR".

Anyway I am pumped for this band so far they rock.

Much as I hope VR's album will do well, I don't think it will hit #1.  Too much pop and rap shit dominating the charts for that to happen.

Are you retarded?

No, just a VR nonbeliever.  And being an ardent Axl supporter doesn't hurt either.   ;)

As starchild pointed out, Weiland is the lyricist, not the songwriter.  There is a difference... Confusing, isnt it?  But that's the way it is.

So what are you doing just now?  :P

I like Slither - it's a great car song.  Nightrain, however, is one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME.  And let's not start the chorus argument again, please.

VR is the reverse of the new Guns N Roses. Sorry but it is true.

In many ways it is - this band actually does something! gasp!  But that is a comparison, isnt it?

I will be a happy camper once June 8th rolls around.  I am eagerly anticipating all the songs.  I also want to see if Weiland really is that good or not... I dont know yet.

I fucking envy you guys.. .you VR fans.. I read about the album and your all excited about the new tunes and the upcoming shows...

I wish I could get as excited about it as you guys are (I have tried) but even in the early days i was always an Axl Rose fan and he was the one i wanted to see and hear and watch and follow..

Dont get me wrong I like the old members alot but I just dont get excited about VR like you guys do...

I wish Axl would fucking do something to excite me again.

Im gonna lay off the Slash and Duff, Matt bashing (yes i have bashed them) and let you dudes enjoy it.

I just hope that during the Howard Stern and Letterman things all you VR fans are getting they just lay off Axl..  leave it alone.. yes we know what hes not delivered and has promised....

anyways I just wanted to tell you guys that i fucking envy the VR fans...

guess ill go back to the main board and discuss stupid shit like Axls hair or Fraudulant Ebay auctions...

I agree, VR will be very big, i dont think it'll make No1, it's a style of music that todays audience is not into but that very well may change.

Of course i'm just thinking about this, VR will be a big band no denying but they won't be the type of band that will change the world and change the scene like say the beatles when they came out or GNR or as much as i hate to say NIRVANA. But what they will do is influence a new generation of old style rock thats GOOD with a mix of today's technology etc etc.

In a few years i think there will be a 1 big band who will change the scene from the rap and r&b shit we have to rock n roll, and they will have hundreds of new bands vying for top spot of the new generation rock bands.

And their influence will be VR. VR is a band that will do great things but it needs a whole scene of bands like them to really make an impact on the world. That will take time(if it happens). If Contraband is a big success as i'm sure it will be the follow up album will create hundreds of new bands trying to be the next big hard rock band. In turn changing the style of music thats fresh from rap n manafactured pop to rock n roll. Of course i'm just thinking this but it's a big chance VR may help do this. And i pray they do : ok:

Ive disliked nearly everything you post, but I applaud your honesty here.  Good post...

However youre forgetting one thing - nearly every one of us is an Axl Rose fan, whether it seems so or not.  Im anticipating the new album as much as anybody, however Im too tired of being let down.  So like everybody else , I just wait for Axl to stop disappointing and finally remind us why we care in the first place.  In the meantime, everything feels very negative andf thats reflected in our posts.

Too bad you cant get into VR...hopefully that changes

Its a great time for fans of the ex-members, and if youre a fan of both GNR and STP, its even better.  All this VR stuff is very exciting, and it makes it feel like all these after the GNR break-up have finally paid off.  And right now is the most exciting part...promotion for the upcoming album, "secret" shows (by which all accounts are incredible), videos, radio singles, festivals, the beginning of a national tour (in an intimate club environment), bootlegs, acoustic performances, etc.  Its too bad not everybody can share in the excitement.

Thanks dude, but like Booker said, many of VR fans are still Axl fans, I know I am, but Axl hasn't released or done anything of late for me to get excited about, and Slash, Duff & Matt have.

I hope you come around to VR cause man, I f**king love them now and I anticipate this album probably even more than CD.

Kockstar, I believe that's the most maturity I've ever seen you display on these boards during the short time I've been here.  I hope that once you hear Contraband you will love it.  And then, you too, will be a VR fan and you won't have to envy us anymore.   And I agree with the others who has responded in that we all wanted Axl to release Chinese Democracy, but I just don't see it ever happening at this point.  Might as well jump aboard the VR bandwagon and forget about it.  This band kicks ass.

I also want to see if Weiland really is that good or not... I dont know yet.

Random, you never heard STP?

If I answered yes or no, would you be satisfied - or does your question intend to probe deeper?  I cant tell, so I will answer twice for your convenience.  :P

Short answer:  I was in high school in the mid 90's so I am definitely aware of STP.  I've listened to Core and Purple and I enjoyed them both.  But quite frankly, their music was overshadowed in many respects by the giants of the 90's including Pearl Jam, RHCP, Pumpkins, Green Day, and others.  Perhaps you dont agree, but this is how I saw it.  I felt that Weiland was good but in a very average sort of way!

Long answer:  (feel free to skip this)  ;D

Someone on this board once compared Axl to Mike Tyson - they have the power to greatly thrill, and to greatly disappoint.  The key word being greatly.  Axl's performances can transport me to either extreme.  I've watched some VR bootlegs (never any STP), and I ask you is this Weiland at this best?  Is this the best he can be?

Well, I think he's good, but it wont make an STPJoe out of me.  In some ways, the VR board made me realize what an Axl fan I am.  I see people there react the same way to Scott as some people do for Axl on this board, and it amuses me to no end.  I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I understand why Axl inspires devotion, I dont understand it with Weiland though.  They are seeing something that I fail to see.

I admit that I do see Weiland as a means to an end (to a certain degree as someone else said), but I dont mean that to belittle him or his talent.  I am honestly waiting for Contraband to see just how good he is.

Good post, Random...

Well, youre right - I dont agree.  I felt STP was easily one of the decades best, and the decades best when it came to singles.  Nearly every one of their singles (up to Shangri-La-Di-Da) is a classic to me, and I must not be alone since they are still rock radio staples.  In fact, aside from Metallica, theyre one of the most played bands on the radio, still.  I hear STP songs as much or more than even GNR.  Thats from "Wicked Garden" all the way to the acoustic "Plush".

As for Weiland himself, I feel hes grown a lot since the first album.  Hes very diverse stylistically, almost to a fault ("Wet My Bed" is god-awful...it makes "My World" look like a classic), but the variation of lyrical and singing styles makes him interesting to me.  Hes also an occasional thief, whether its intentional or not - some of his lyrics and vocal melodies will give you deja vu (however any Pearl Jam/Veddar comparisons are invalid).  And lyrically he can fall flat from time to time.  But these are realtively minor complaints that you could make about nearly any frontman.

Scotts greatest skill (Ive posted about this before) is his vocal melodies.  Hes really got a gift when it comes to that.  Most of the melodies he came up with in STP were flawless in my opinion.  Verses, hooks, bridges - he shines whebn it comes to melody.  And while his lyrics range from clumsy to great, theyre almost always interesting.

I've watched some VR bootlegs (never any STP), and I ask you is this Weiland at this best?  Is this the best he can be?

Theres only been two VR bootlegs (thus far).  Weiland was damn good at El Rey.  Was he at his best?  Close to it maybe, but Im positive he can do better (sounds like he already topped himself at the Roxy).  I dont care for his humping movements, but Scott can perform like a motherfucker.  I loved the finale to "Sex Type Thing" when he flailed the trademark bullhorn like a chainsaw.  He dances, collapses to the floor, climbs on top of shit, poses, interacts with the audience and band, crowd-dives and generally injects a lot of energy and passion into his performing.  And he does it while singing almost perfectly.

Smashbox wasnt the typical performance (two ballads at a fashion show - not the best way to gauge a frontmans capabilities), but I still feel he did a great job.  He sounded great and performed very well.

Thats fine, I understand that.  I can personally understand both, and hopefully Scott lives up to expectations with this album and makes a lot of new fans.

I admit that I do see Weiland as a means to an end (to a certain degree as someone else said), but I dont mean that to belittle him or his talent.

I dont know.  I think Scotts appeal to a different audience was surely a plus when factoring his role in VR, but I believe it ultimately came down to his talent, and theres no doubt in my mind he was the right man for the job.  Save for Axl Rose himself, theres honestly nobody else Id rather see front this band.

Have to agree with alot of what you said there Booker - Scott Weiland is one talented exciting Singer/Songwriter.

My personal Fav STP album is No 4,  I just really love that album.

I Hope in VR - he doesn't shy away from the performer he is/has been.

Granted judging by the people's reaction on this site to any hint of Flamboyancy sends people into spasms lol So the sight of what he has worn on stage on occasion will totally knock them out lol   But that's what rock should be! IMO  Should be balls to everyone - excite some, confuse others..

I hope he allows his talent to come through on the album(s)

And adding to that; I hope Slash and co' don't shy away from trying out different styles, ballads ect aswell as the Bluesy rock it will make the band something  exciting not just for GNR/STP fans.

You are right. You can not compare these bands.

GnR haven't done much.

VR have taken the bull by the horns and are getting ready to kick some major ass. An album, a tour, videos, great communication with their fans, you name it.

So no, you can't compare them at all. :hihi:

My personal Fav STP album is No 4,  I just really love that album.

"Atlanta" is amazing - most likely their best non-single song.  I suggest anybody whose STP exposure has been limited to the singles/first album to at least download this song.  "Down" is a brutal rocker, and "Sour Girl" is a classic.

stp's last 2 albums get overlooked. They didnt do well commercially but I listen to them all the time. Booker is finally right, Atlanta is such a cool song. I love it.

Anyways I think its funny when I read the vr vs gnr stuff. Its only natural that its going to come up but why cant we enjoy both? Why does it have to be 1 or the other. I have always been an STP fan, and seeing weiland front a band liek this should be fun. Im gonna enjoy vr. They are gonna be my appetitizer so to speak. They will occupy me till the main course comes.

"Lady Picture Show" is definitely lovely...And a great example of Scotts melodies.

STP were extremely consistent and they developed a lot since Core.

Other post-Core/Purple songs to check for...

"Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart" (Probably my favorite STP track - Brilliant, swirling guitars...Surreal, distorted vocals...Beautiful hook and nasty guitar solo:  : ok:)

"Seven Caged Tigers"

"Big Bang Baby"

"Sour Girl"

"Glide"

"I Got You" (Chances are youll love this - very Beatles-esque)

"Days Of The Week" (Another highly melodic, pop track)

"Wonderful"

"Too Cool Queenie"

"Song For Sleeping"

"Hello, Its Late"

Along with "Down," that might be their best rocker since Purple.  A good note to go out on.

Great song, I think I'll listen to it...now..while waiting on an STL review.
