but if you are a killer guitar player then you might find a band anyway.. but there are WAY to many guitarists out there!!! Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: YaMaGaTa on December 12, 2002, 09:34:41 AM Any of yas play a six string then...? ;D

Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: willy4pres on December 13, 2002, 05:49:35 PM I've been playing guitar for the last 15 years, picked up the bass off and on throughout that timeframe.
Im thinking of buying a new Carvin rig in the near future, something very large, to go with my new Carvin LB75. Your right though, it is easier to find some guys to play with when you play Bass, everyone play's guitar. Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Butch Français on December 23, 2002, 08:49:01 PM I mostly play guitar, but thats because i dont have a bass, whenever I get the chance to play bass I sit and pick on the strings for hours, and LOVE it!! [yes]
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Seb on December 24, 2002, 03:06:44 AM i mostly play guitar but sometimes bassand it's pretty funny to do [hihi]
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: eNgIeS on December 29, 2002, 09:05:39 AM Hey guys
I dont play any instruments, but my mates are thinking of making a band (they both play guitar) & they're asking me to learn Bass. The thing is I dont know anything really about Bass Guitar, can someone just give me a breif run down about whether Bass is hard to learn & play, how much hours of practice do you think you need to become a decent bass player, what is the purpose of the bass guitar (as in what it brings to the music & band, does it mix well with other instruments) or would Keyboard be easier to learn :) (I played long ago but have forgotten now) Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Chris Misfit on December 29, 2002, 02:41:00 PM I play a bit of Bass. Not a great bass player, but I can pull off a few Punk tunes.
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Captain P?l on December 30, 2002, 12:43:41 PM I play a bit of Bass. Not a great bass player, but I can pull off a few Punk tunes. no shit???? you are an awesome bass player! so you know 3 chords? hehe... punk are fun to play sometimes...but kinda easy... you go! Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Jim on January 22, 2003, 07:55:20 AM I have played Bass for a couple of years now
I play a four string Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Aero on January 22, 2003, 08:54:06 AM i have no bass, but i think that it's preety easy... i can play any song in bass when i get one [peace] i just need some time to hear the bass in the song and get it
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Pviljoen on January 22, 2003, 04:58:47 PM well there are songs that you couldnt do that with... but yeah it takes a certain attitude to be a bass player.
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Jim on January 23, 2003, 12:55:40 PM I hate when people who play guitar say "I don't like bass, it's boring, it's piss easy"
I just think what the fuck? Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Miz on January 23, 2003, 04:13:58 PM I don't like bass, it's boring, it's piss easy... [ok]
I don't actually have anything usefull to add, except, its very hard to play with fingers instead of a pick. Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Jim on January 23, 2003, 05:13:19 PM I usually play with my fingers as opposed to a plec.
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Dragon on January 30, 2003, 11:28:06 AM I'm not a bass player but i have played it sometimes. And I have a friend that love his bass. Playing bass can be really easy and really hard. If you only play the bass notes it easy but try to play some funk with all those slaptechniques and pulloffs and all the other things they do to their bass.
Listen to Victor Wooten, that's a guy that can use his bass. Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Captain P?l on February 08, 2003, 07:06:08 PM i agree with dragon..... its all in the kind of music... bands like GNR dont have complicated bass lines.... punk has even less complicated bass lines... and you can make some really kick ass fills with a bass!
also, if you can play like Colonel Claypool [drooling] you're kinda good... *ashamed* i play with a pick [confused] Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Butch Français on February 08, 2003, 10:13:01 PM I like to play with the fingers a LOT better then playing with a pick!
yeah, Claypool rules the bass.........Flea is pretty good too [yes] [ok] Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Evolution on May 27, 2004, 07:15:04 PM yeh i play bass.i have a beginners westfield and have been meaning to upgrade but funds are LOW :) i play with a pick but want to swap to fingers once i develop some strength in my fingers
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Slashly on May 27, 2004, 07:26:24 PM Well, I am a guitar player. But, by luck, I got a bass about 1 and half years ago.I have played bass in a band (true what you say about finding very easy a band that needs a bass player, Captain P?L ).
I play with pick, (I feel more like duff playing with a pick ;)) probably because I?m already more used to play with it, cause im a guitar player. But you really need attitude to play bass !!!! Baby Slash// Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: chineseilusions on May 27, 2004, 10:53:08 PM I play bass but I suck
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Captain P?l on May 28, 2004, 04:48:37 AM i "just" bought my self a new bass! Squire P-Bass.. it rocks :D (and i forgot about this thread)
and i also bought myself a Behringer BX1200 combo amp! it rocks! and its cheap! and it rocks! can shape the sound however you fucking want! as a bass player, how do YOU like the sound? the sound of metal or the really warm rich sound? i personally use the warmest sound i can, mixed a litle with some treeble in there... i need to feel my playing. i like to feel the room shake! and my body quake ;) : ok: Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Evolution on May 29, 2004, 08:31:33 PM im not a fan of a metallic sound.i like a rich wumm : ok:
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: outlawaxl on May 31, 2004, 02:15:01 AM Bass is not as hard as guitar(obviously) 4 strings or 6 to learn?
I dont own a bass but everytime im in the guitarshops i always go plug in a play the display Bass guitars... I was able to play the SCOM bass line just in 30 seconds of sitting down the first time with a bass.. yeah bass players are full of attidute look at Rob Trujillo Gene Simmons Sixx Flea Duff Jason Nestead those are some bad mother fuckers in my opinion... Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Skeba on May 31, 2004, 03:39:10 AM Bass is not as hard as guitar(obviously) 4 strings or 6 to learn? That is just about the most ridiculous thing I've heard on this board. Bass playing can be easy yeah, but once you drop the pick and start really playing, it becomes a shitload harder. Out of the players you listed Flea can be called a bass player. Maybe Rob too, I'm not that familiar with his work. But you go and listen to Victor Wooten and tell me that is not as hard as Satriani's or Vai's or who ever's work on the guitar. Besides. Ask any guitarplayer if they had their 2 highest string clipped off and if it would be easier to play the songs they've been playing now that they only had 4 strings to learn. Trust me, it is not. Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: outlawaxl on May 31, 2004, 04:17:57 AM I found it easier... just my opinion..
Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: AdZ on May 31, 2004, 10:10:53 AM No way is that shit easier.
It's hard as hell, playing like Flea is hard as hell to begin with. If you could play slap bass with your first few times playing a bass, that would be phenomenal. But you couldn't, it isn't easy. Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Butch Français on May 31, 2004, 01:12:58 PM I see I already have replied to this thread, don't remember doing it....but it's been months though ;D
bass players? yeah Ive got one of those wacky characters in my band.. and playing bass is hard, maybe not to begin with, like "oooh I played an E!!! damn that was easy!" but you know, there are soooooo much more to learn than just doing the easiest things. it is that way with most instruments from my experience. : ok: Title: Re:Bass players? Post by: Captain P?l on June 01, 2004, 05:15:00 AM outlawaxl, you play guitar? or anyother instrument?
im sure a bass player can play the guitar intro to sweet child on guitar after 30sec.... so just 'cuz a part is easy dosnt mean the hole genre is easy... playing AC/DC may be easy. but playing primus, maiden, metallica, red hot chilli peppers, queen of the stone age and such aint that easy.... and there are 5strings basses too.... by the way, slap bass is only cool for 20sec's... it get's boring and dull real fast. sure, you have to be good to do it, but i rather stick to my pick.... only use finger on slower songs like Dont Cry, Patience and that kinda songs... : ok: Title: Re:Bass players? Listen to almost all newsted era songs and you hear: Guitar-Guitar-Drums, you hardly hear bass!!! Baby Slash// Title: Re: Bass players? Post by: Is he struggling? on December 27, 2004, 02:21:56 PM I've been teaching myself bass for about a month now. I tend to find using fingers muchn easier than using a pick.
A lot of rock and blues basslines are pretty easy to learn, but many are often difficult to master (i.e. using hammer ons, pull offs, slapping and other techniques. Quote im not a fan of a metallic sound Dude, I really feel sorry about Jason Newsted, I?ve never heard his bass!!! Listen to almost all newsted era songs and you hear: Guitar-Guitar-Drums, you hardly hear bass!!! Baby Slash// You can hear a lot of great Newstead basslines on the Black album (especially 'Sandman' and 'Misery') although yes, IT was often very difficult to pick out the basslines on most Metallica records. Actually, there is often the same problem on the Cliff Burton albums too. Title: Re:Bass players? Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam recorded 'Jeremy' on a 12 string bass. and if anyone say playing bass is piss easy, tell them to download something live with Primus. they will probably realize soon after seeing it that what they before used to call bassplaying is the same as knowing a couple of chords on a guitar. :peace: Title: Re: Bass players? Post by: D on December 28, 2004, 11:45:31 PM some bass is easy just like some guitar is easy
if u pick the root note only on bass its easy, just as if u play 3 power chords in a song on guitar there is difficult bass lines there are easy bass lines on my songs sometimes i really shine on bass and some i just kind of use the bass to give my songs a fuller sound and dont do much with it. i love runnin through fills on bass in my songs, sometimes i try to use counter rhythms on bass to fit in with my guitar i think its easier learning to play bass than it is guitar. not saying bass is easy, but u can be a passable bass player and even join bands quicker than u could tryin to be a guitar player. actually when i use to give guitar lessons, i would start the people out on bass just to give them a fill of playin notes and movin their fingers they all learned guitar pretty quickly afterwards. |
