Who here thinks Duff is the worst singer they've ever heard and would have rather not had him sing at all? :hihi:

Well, he is  clearly not one of the best singers out there.He has his own strange style of voice, grumpy,drunken strange fucking  voice.
But I love the way he sigs in So Fine, so I think that time it was good that someone handed him a mic :yes:

Actually I really like his singing. Very different, and maybe not technically great at all, but I like it.

IMO GNR had some of the best backing vocals, and I mean that in a way like I definitely wouldn't mind having any of the guys be lead singer for my band. Whenever I can say that for a backup vocalist, I consider it to be pretty good.

That's just my opinion though, I can definitely see why some people wouldn't like his singing. To each his own.

I loved during the 87/88 era during Out Ta Get Me when Duff would sing the.. "they wont touch me" bits.. that sounded cool.

well perhaps I'm exception but I like his voice. For examble, "So Fine" and "you can't put your arms around a memory" have good impact with Duff singing on those songs.

IMO, So Fine has some of the best vocals in ANY Guns N' Roses song.

As for his singing abilities: punk rockers don't need to know how to sing, they just need attitude.

true... I liked Attitude... but at the begining when he always asks "are you fucking ready"?  he sounds nervous or like hes warning us whats going to come next isnt that great...

but Attitude was a bad ass tune...

For those who say that Duff has the worst voice ever, you obviously haven't heard William Hung (American Idol.. I think). How the fuck did he get a record contract?? He's fucking everywhere.. All over the news and other programs.

I like Duff vocals. HIS VOICE IS PRETTY COOL ON "ATITUDE". He is a much better background vocalist than Robin Finck for exemple. Finck is a desaster, but Stinson is pretty good on background vocal.

Well if you say that about Duff,what about Britney or Enrique? :)  It's true that,compared to Axl,he sounds bloody awful,but at lest he rocks!  Robin does a much better job,though

If you don't think Duff is intelligent, try reading interviews with him.  Considering their sordid reputations, all of the original Gunners are surprisingly well-spoken and eloquent.

And if you're going to poke fun at Duff's intelligence (or anyone's), you could at least spell "allegedly" correctly.

Duff isn't stupid at all. I find him very mature in his head. He is a responsible man, he has a wife, he has children, he takes care of himself  and he even returned at University to study economy and he succeeded!  he is too increadibly HEALTHY after all these years. He does a lot of sport, he is very muscle for a 40 years old man. Duff looks much better today in his 40's than in his 20's. I have a lo of respect for him. And Slash seems to be better too, more open-minded, cooler than before, very respectfull throught the fans. They seem both to be better men. I respect them a lot.

I'm not denying that, it's just that he doesn't give that impression through the album 'Believe In Me'. You have to admit song titles like 'I Love You' and 'Fuck You' are pretty hilarious.. And the content isn't much to write home about, either.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I own Believe in Me as well as Beautiful Disease--bad stuff. Duff's voice can be creatively used in little flourishes, but it doesn't work as a lead or even as 1/2 of a duet. It's just not good enough. Sounds like he has a cough drop in his mouth or something.

my thoughts exactly!! I have to admit that in the beginning of Guns he was more a lush dopehead but he's changed a lot since then, nowadays he reads a lot and all and he's very smart actually... did you know he took a test to go to Harvard and passed? So he can't be that stupid! :P
But I'll be honest, in the 80s he sometimes said some pretty stupid things and the tittles don't sound very high class but still...

But serious now, have you ever heard Beautiful Disease? Songs like Rain or Hope, Hope where he goes so high, that's beautiful!!!! :love: On BIM he was just drunk so his voice was no good, through the entire Guns period he was!!! After that his voice got a lot better!!! Ok, he'll never be as good as Axl or anything but he's not that bad you should go say such things either! >:( And for some songs his voice just fits...like Attitude and even So Fine (however that last one isn't so good I personally think) but something like Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory is no good, I admit, and I'm a huge Duff fan ;)

When used properly, Duff's voice sounds great.  But when his voice doesn't fit the song, it sounds like utter crap.  Obviously his main influence was punk and his voice definately reflects that (sounds sorta like a gruff Billy Joe Armstrong).  Take "New Rose" for example.  The song definately is punk and Duff sounds fantastic on it in my opinion.  It all just depends on the type of song.

No way! Personally I think Duff is a great singer! It just depends what song is being sung... because Duff has a low voice maybe he might not be as good as singing songs with high notes as Axl is, but that doesn't make him crap! Everyone has different tastes and if you think Duff is crap then fair enough that is your opinion, but I think Duff is great!

He should stick to BVs and let Scott do all the singing.

That is funny stuff.  He sounds so HAMMERED through that whole portion of the video.  He also gave a great intervieew to MTV  news in early '91 talking about the Illusion music and why it was taking so long, and he said , "'Cause, Slash....like....he has these.....riffs.....that are...uh......like....these..............................................................
GUITAR riffs!.......and ....uhhhhh...".  He did another one from some party where he was SLOSHED, and the interviewer said "When will it be out?"  Duff actually flinched and gave a cartoony, drunken frown, then gave this shit-eating grin and said 'When it's done!"
Duff was pretty much my favorite non-Axl member then, and these interviews cemented that forvever.

I like Duff's vocals.  They're not particularly good from a technical standpoint, but he has some real emotion in there...he does have that classic punk vibe.

Duff does seem to be completely fucking wasted on his interwiev segments in the Tokyo dome videos.   ;D I wouldn't say he's a bad singer, he was just so damn drunk and high during his time in GNR..obviously that would affect his ability to sing. And he's a punk rocker, not a fucking opera singer..  ::)

We all love Duff, but don't like his singing.  If Duff never sang, the material would have been better.  We just have to "live" with Duff's singing because GNR is such an amazing band.   I would have preferred Axl's voice on all the material Duff sang on.  That would have rocked.  

And you know what, this shows that Axl isn't so much of a control freak after all.  He allowed Duff to sing what he wanted, and that's pretty cool.

I love the song SO FINE... The live versions.. the version on the Tokyo vids.. The versions where Axl sings it..

The studio version is good but not as good as when axl sings it...

Same song but different singer... Duff wrote it and its awsome.. but Axl should have sung it...

2. Duff has a great voice, that deserves to be heard! Imagine Axl all the way through!
Imagine GNR without DUFF, and his vocal ability! His voice stamps a mark on the GNR songs he sings!
Imagine No Duff backing vocals on AFD! Etc.
3. GNR is an amzing band! ALL Including DUFF have talent! {Which again needs to be shown to the whole wide world!}
4. None of the GNR members were control freaks, they just had different tatses that's all- fame drove them apart!
5. Duff wrote the god-damn song, he deserves to sing it!
6. I don't think Axl could sing You Can't Put You're Arms Around A Memory as good as DUFF! Why? Duff is a Johnny Thunders freak! He feel's for JT, and the music played!

7. Duff is a god-damn hottie! Which means when he sings GNR songs on stage you can get another excuse for seeing him with his top off! Duh!

Bottom line- Duff and his cool punk-rock voice rule!

Duff's vocals on 'Song for Beverly' were among the most chilling and heartfelt vocals I've ever heard in my life. Duff's Beautiful Disease album is one of rock's greatest lost albums, in my view.

Oh, and for some more Duff goodness, how about that bit on the Tokyo vids where he says:

"I know what Slash is thinking...in his head..."  ;D

And Duff is the conductor of the band, without question. The band only really lost time or screwed up when Duff did, and he gives out all the cues for when things have to happen, and to be honest as a guitarist you really NEED a bassist who can do that.
