Title: Re:Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: Oddy on March 31, 2004, 11:13:21 PM without a doubt i think they're best song is freebird, one of my favourite songs of all time, fucking awesome guitar work as soon as it hits that solo i just wanna .............i dunno jump up and down. :hihi:
yeah i guess sweet home alabama is their most well known song which leads me to another question. Why is it that 90% of people (majority of people i know) think that sweet home alabama was sung by creedence clear water revival? I tell people it was actually lynyrd skynrd and they'll say "who the fuck is that guy?" ::) i guess lynyrd skynyrd should be one of the bands in that underrated thread. Cuz nobody knows much about them at all. ah well its not as bad as ppl thinking led zeppelin is a person...........hahaha..........people  Title: Re:Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: Thumper on March 31, 2004, 11:17:09 PM Free Bird

Let's take LS and Led Zep , two great bands , one is from the southern us and the other is from England. It doesn't mean shit where they're from . LS's influences are Jimi Hendrix,Rolling Stones , The Doors and Neil Young( well, until the song sweet home alabama)

Aerosmith decided to buy their own plane to fly around in for gigs. They checked it out, the pilots were drunk, it was a piece of shit plane. Their tour manager refused to fly in it. Aero's manager were set on buying this plane, because it save a lot of money. Since Aero wouldn't fly without their tour manager with them, they never bought the plane. 3 months later to day the that same plane crashed carrying the members of Lynyrd Skynryd. Title: Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: Rob on June 18, 2005, 03:57:06 AM Wow...that's an amazing story there Mama Kin. Fuckin' crazy how shit turns out sometimes. And Sweet Home Alabama wasn't meant as a shot at Neil Young for his song Southern Man. It was actually a joke. They were pretending they were pissed. The first time Young heard the song he called up the band and told them he got the joke.

Title: Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: Malcolm on August 30, 2005, 08:14:00 AM Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd have called off their touring plans for the next three months so that frontman Johnny Van Zant can undergo surgery for nagging throat problems.
According to a statement posted at the group's website, Van Zant continues to suffer from "acute and chronic inflammation of his vocal cord and development of a large vocal cord polyp." Removal of the polyp will require surgery, and "post-operative rehabilitation will prevent him from performing over the next three months," the statement reads. Van Zant has been battling recurrent throat problems in recent months. In June, the group postponed some shows while he recovered from "a severe case of strep throat," according to a press release issued at the time. Earlier this month, the group scrapped several shows to give Van Zant time to rest his voice due to "significant vocal cord inflammation and swelling," said an announcement issued by the band. Van Zant's condition has forced Lynyrd Skynyrd to call off all of its shows through October, including a stint with The Allman Brothers Band . The Allmans will instead be the sole headliner on the dates that were to feature both acts, according to Lynyrd Skynyrd's statement. The 15-city trek begins June 25 in Cincinnati and wraps July 22 in Biloxi, Miss. The bulk of the dates are in the South and Midwest, but they'll cover some Yankee territory as well, including three shows in Pennsylvania. "We've been trying to go on the road with these guys for a while," Lynyrd Skynyrd singer Johnny Van Zant said. "We've done a few events together, but our schedules haven't worked out before now. We're excited about these shows. It's going to be a high energy, old school meets new school Southern rock concert you don't want to miss." "It's going to be an honor to share the same stage with these guys every night," 3 Doors Down vocalist Brad Arnold said. "Like so many others, I grew up listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd. We've been friends with the guys for years, so it's going to be great to finally get to tour together." Founding Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington added, "We're going to double the pleasure, double the fun and double the trouble on this tour!" I like the idea of this tour but 3 Doors Down should only get an extended opening slot not co headline ?DOUBLE TROUBLE? Rock on!? :peace: I could be wrong on this one, but wasnt Freebird recorded using 3 guitars, (two rhythm, and one lead)? This is actually one of those rock myths. The solo is done with 1 guitar (amazing huh?). Allen Collins had every note memorized and laid it down in the studio. The producer went back and had him play it again, and since he had it memorized he nailed it again except for like 2 measures. Then the producer just doubled them on the album. The producer didn't tell Collins that he was going to double the solo and didn't let Collins play along to the first solo that he had recorded. Mark(Nashville, TN) - Legendary southern rock band LYNYRD SKYNYRD welcomes guitarist Mark Matejka to join Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke as part of the triple-guitar attack. Matejka, politely dubbed with the nickname 'Sparky,' will fill the position previously held by Hughie Thomasson. "It's a dream come true to play with Lynyrd Skynyrd and I couldn't be happier,' says Matejka. 'Having played with Charlie Daniels I feel it's an honor to be back playing in the southern rock tradition." Matejka previously played with bands such as The Charlie Daniels Band, Hot Apple Pie, and Sons of the Desert. ROCK LEGENDS LYNYRD SKYNYRD PERSONALLY REFUND JULY 4TH SALISBURY, MD SHOW BAND FORCED TO CANCEL PERFORMANCE DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER (Nashville, TN) ? Lynyrd Skynyrd has announced they are personally offering a refund to patrons who purchased tickets to the July 4th Salisbury, Maryland show at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium. Refunds will be made available through January 5, 2007 by visiting the Arthur W. Purdue Stadium Box Office located at 6400 Hobbs Road, Route 50 in Salisbury. The show was cancelled due to severe weather complications. In the past week, Lynyrd Skynyrd received word that the promoter halted refunds on July 31, 2006, leaving fans who had not received a refund jilted. ?Our fans are what keep us going,? says Johnny Van Zant. ?When we heard about this, we were all shocked! We have very loyal fans and are also loyal to them.? The band along with The Delmarva Shorebirds and Comcast-Spectacor has decided to donate money to ensure their fans receive a full refund, immediately. In addition, the band hopes to return and perform in the area in the near future. One of the hardest working groups in music today, Lynyrd Skynyrd performs hundreds of shows each year. In 2006, the band performed on the VH1 Decades Rock Live (airing Sept. 1st), were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (March 13, 2006), and has been touring steadily throughout the yea Title: Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: GNRfan2008 on January 03, 2007, 05:37:46 AM Any recomendation on how can I start to listen this band, perhaps a greatest hits? Here is quite complex to buy that kinda albums :-\ As another poster said, "All Time Greatest Hits" is a great selection of their best songs. Amazon.com has it for $9.99 and I'm sure stores like Best Buy have a good price on it too. A fair warning is that "Free Bird" is a LIVE version and the studio version is not included in this package. But this live version is an incredible one. It's over 14 minutes long and kicks total ass. You can download the studio version for free from anywhere. I've listened to that album many times over and over and it's just awesome. "Tuesday's Gone" is also not included in "All Time Greatest Hits." "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" is a track I highly recommend to anyone, especially anyone who ignorantly thinks Lynyrd Skynyrd were/are redneck racists. Another greatest hits package is called "The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd." It comes with the studio AND live versions of "Free Bird," as well as "Tuesday's Gone." It is a two-disc set and Amazon.com has it for $13.99, which is a good price for 25 songs. I personally own the first one mentioned so I can't comment on this one but it looks to be just as good except for more songs included. Title: Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: Malcolm on January 03, 2007, 10:54:45 AM I also recommend that if you get into there older stuff..Viscious Cycle is a must pickup...Its there lastest album and I belive its from 2001 but man it kicks ass...Thats How I Like It, The Way,Red,White & Blue, are all instant Skynyrd classics...And a great remake of Gimme Back My Bullets with Kid Rock

Listen to me: this is one of the best bands ever. Get any one, or all of their first 5 albums, and you can't go wrong. They all are great, with no filler. The present rendition of the band is doing all of the all old songs--this is a band that has been making money off the same songs for 30+ years, and you know what, the songs are still great. I saw them (again) in 2006 and the old songs still have the same magic (if not exactly the same energy). So do yourself a favor and get any of the original albums (1972-1977) and CRANK IT UP LOUD. Fans gorge on Southern-fried rock 38 Special, Skynyrd, Hank Jr. put on a skull-rattling' show Friday, April 13, 2007 By CHRIS WELCH Times Entertainment Writer chris.welch@htimes.com Here's the challenge that more than 6,000 fans faced at the Von Braun Center Arena on Wednesday night: First, they stood for an hour or so of great Southern rock from 38 Special. And that even included a virtually unheard of encore for an opening band when it returned to play "Hold on Loosely." Then they stood another 90 minutes for the amp-blowing, guitar-driven rock from the legendary and recently Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted Lynyrd Skynyrd. That included whipping themselves into a frenzy when "Sweet Home Alabama" came on followed by a 15-minute encore of "Freebird." By this time, many in the crowd were worn out, full of beer, stumbling up the stairs and generally out of it and they still had another hour or so left for one of country's legendary singers, Hank Williams Jr. And all this on a school or a work night. No doubt, there were a lot of bleary-eyed folks reporting to work Thursday morning - or not - after more than four hours of the aptly named Rowdy Frynds Tour. The 20-city tour opened here with three legit headliners. 38 Special, led by Donnie Van Zant, brother of Skynyrd lead singer Johnny Van Zant, warmed up the crowd quickly with hits such as "Wild Eyed Southern Boys, "Fantasy Girl," Second Chance," "Caught up in You" and a medley of songs that included "Back to Paradise," "Somebody Like You" and "Teacher, Teacher." Skynyrd then took the stage and never slowed down. It opened with, as Van Zant says, a song that gives him chill bumps - "Travelin' Man." As he sang, a video showed black-and-white footage of his late brother, Ronnie, singing the same song. The band went into "That Smell" and "Simple Man" - Van Zant's favorite. Skynyrd ran through a medley of its hits, including "Needle and Spin," "Curtis Loew," "Cry for the Bad Man" and "Tuesday's Gone." Van Zant tied an American flag to the mic and dedicated "Red White and Blue" to the troops, followed by "Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze" and "Sweet Home Alabama." (The crowd added its own "Roll Tide Roll" after each chorus.) When Skynyrd returned for the encore, Van Zant said: "What song do you want to hear?" With that, fans raised their lighters, and the group raised the roof with the rock anthem "Freebird." "It was amazing, tantalizing, epic, skull-rattling," said Patrick Billingsley, a high school student who plays in the Cove United Methodist Church Liquid band. "It's one of the best concerts I've seen, which puts them up in the rankings with the likes of Motley Crue, Kiss, Aerosmith, to name a few." At 10:15, Williams had the unenviable task of trying to recharge a crowd that had gotten totally juiced from Skynyrd and 38 Special. Williams came out alone, dressed in a sleeveless Pittsburgh Steelers shirt, and showed the skills of the talented guitarist/musician he is, changing gears and slowing the pace to his country-fied style. He opened with a few acoustic songs, including "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound" and "Dinosaur," before the band joined him for "Country Boy." He followed with "If Heaven Ain't a Lot Like Dixie" and followed with the hit he did with Gretchen Wilson and the Van Zants, "That's How They do it in Dixie." He hollered, "This will be year No. 17!" and kicked into his theme from "Monday Night Football" - "All My Rowdy Friends Are Comin' Over Tonight" as NFL highlights played on a video screen. He also played "Old Habits" and did his best imitation of ZZ Top on the cover of "La Grange." He rattled off some chords from Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever" and Aerosmith's "Walk this Way" before breaking into "Family Tradition," which the audience really got into. Surprisingly, he didn't return for an encore, but maybe that was best - it was 11:15, and everybody was worn out from a great night of music. ? 2007 The Huntsville Times. Title: Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: Malcolm on March 23, 2008, 12:02:43 PM Vintage Tune May Grace New Skynyrd Album
A previously unreleased song featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd's original lineup may surface on the Southern rock band's next studio album, which is expected out in early 2009. Guitarist Gary Rossington tells Billboard.com that he recently unearthed the song, "Cottonmouth Country," from the archives. "It has Ronnie Van Zant singing and Leon (Wilkerson) on bass and Bob Burns is on drums," Rossington says. "It's a cool track, pretty cool lyrics -- it's about the swamps. And we never put it out with (producer) Al Kooper on the first or second album. We just kind of let it sit there and never finished it. It's pretty well done, but the recording isn't as good as it could be. So we might put that out as a bonus track -- a whole new Skynyrd song nobody's heard." As for the rest of the album -- Skynyrd's first of new material since 2003's "Vicious Cycle" -- Rossington says that he, frontman Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Rickey Medlocke have been spending time in Nashville working with songwriters. "We're not doing a country album," Rossington says, "but Skynyrd's always had a little bit of country blood in us. That's where we come from." He says the group has at least 20 songs ready for consideration and hopes to hit the studio in April or May. The group hasn't yet determined who will be producing, though Rossington says the band members will likely co-produce with whomever they choose. Skynyrd has plenty else going on at the moment. It recently released a deluxe edition of "Street Survivors," the 1977 best-seller released shortly before the plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines. Skynyrd is also gearing up for another leg of the Rowdy Frynds Tour with Hank Williams, Jr., and .38 Special, which begins April 4 in Hershey, Pa., and to be part of Kid Rock's Rock N Roll Revival show on May 15 at New York's Madison Square Garden and subsequent dates later this summer. Title: Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: Malcolm on January 28, 2009, 07:32:19 PM LYNYRD SKYNYRD keyboardist Billy Powell died Wednesday morning at his home near Jacksonville, Florida. The cause of death has not been revealed. He was 56.
Orange Park police told WJXT-TV, Jacksonville, Fla., Powell called 911 just before 1 a.m. complaining he was having trouble breathing, but paramedics arrived to find him unresponsive. It is believed the musician suffered a fatal heart attack, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of his death, Ross Schilling, a publicist with Vector Management, told WJXT. Powell had skipped an appointment with his cardiologist Tuesday, police said. Powell's death was confirmed on the band's web site. "A great loss ? beloved pianist for the LYNYRD SKYNYRD band, Billy Powell, passed away last night. We will post more info shortly. The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you," reads a message posted on the site. Powell joined LYNYRD SKYNYRD in 1973 and stayed with the band until 1977 when he survived a plane crash that killed singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and other crew members. He suffered critical injuries, but was the only band member able to attend the funerals. He joined the Christian rock band VISION in the 1980s. Powell reunited with LYNYRD SKYNYRD in 1989 and remained with them until his death. Guitarist Gary Rossington is now the only surviving original LYNYRD SKYNYRD member. This is really to bad, he looked like he was doing great when i seen him from front row in Toronto this summer with Kid Rock...Skynyrd kicked major ass Title: Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Post by: CIAT on March 20, 2012, 04:17:23 PM Bump for this epic epic band

"Last Of A Dying Breed" reunites the band with producer Bob Marlette, who helmed "God & Guns".
"It was great to get back in the studio with Bob for this new album," said Gary Rossington. "We kind of went back old school this time. All of us playing together in the studio as a band, tracking songs and creating licks. We had a lot of fun and the music really flowed for us, so that's when you know you are on to something good. We can't wait to let the fans hear these songs and play 'em live." Led by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), along with longtime drummer Michael Cartellone, LYNYRD SKYNYRD have recorded an album that continues the tremendous legacy that began over 35 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, a legacy that was halted for a decade after the 1977 plane crash that killed three bandmembers, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet they rock on. Joining LYNYRD SKYNYRD will be bass player Johnny Colt, an original member of THE BLACK CROWES, who has also played with TRAIN and ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA. When asked about receiving a phone call from Rickey Medlocke on behalf of LYNYRD SKYNYRD to join the band, Johnny said, "What else do you say to Medlocke, Rossington and Van Zant? We're talking southern rock royalty. We're talking LYNYRD SKYNYRD. The only thing out of my mouth was when and where!" With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American rock anthem "Sweet Home Alabama" having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers LYNYRD SKYNYRD remain a cultural icon that appeals to all generations. |
