Title: Axl Rose's self fulfilled prophetic writings?
Post by: Miz on March 20, 2004, 05:25:43 PM
You live your life like it's a coma, so won't you tell me why we'd wanna,
With all the reasons you give it's kinda hard to believe...
But who am I to tell you that I've seen any reason why you should stay,
maybe we'd be better off without you anyway...?

You've got a one way ticket on your last chance ride,
got a one way ticket to your suicide,
you've got a one way ticket and there's no way out alive.

With all this crass communication that has left you in the cold,
it isn't much for consolation that you feel so weak and old.
But if home is where the heart is then there's stories to be told,
No you don't need a doctor, no-one else can heal your soul.

You've got your mind in submission, got your life on the line,
but nobody pulled the trigger, they just stepped aside.
They'll be down by the water while you watch them waving goodbye.

They'll be calling in the morning, they'll be hanging on the phone,
they'll be waiting for an answer but you know nobodies home,
and when the bell stops ringing it was nobodies fault but your own.

There were always ample warnings and there were always subtle signs,
and you would have seen it coming but we gave you too much time.
When you said that no-ones listening why did your best friend drop a time?
Sometimes we get so tired of waiting for a way to spend our time...

Discuss.

wait, are you actually saying that the Coma lyrics are prophetic to Buckethead leaving the band?? you're not serious about that, are you?

People, lyrics work on many levels. So many of you deconstruct various songs and think that by "you", Axl MUST be referring to Slash leaving, Izzy, whatever...Most poetry (lyrics as a subset) is not that specific.

Axl's lyrics always describe a certain disconnect, an isolation and lonliness, a disappointment and disillusionment, betrayal, the loss of love. These are all human themes that relate to his/your/everyone's life in a variety of ways, which is why saying "this song is talking about this specific thing" is, no offense, really boneheaded.

Coma is about his emotional state at the time he wrote it and about the factors that led to that state which will appear over and over in his life. Its really that simple.

Basically alot of GNR lyrics can be interpreted in a variety of ways to mean something different to someone.  That's the great thing to show the versatile song writing skills of mr. rose.

I highly doubt that's what he's saying, so no need to act so horrified.

There is a sense of fatalism in the lyrics, and this appears several times in the UYI albums including Izzy's 'Pretty Tied Up' and 'Dust N' Bones'.  Both these songs, and 'Coma' have a dark humor to them.  They're desperate, yet funny.
Prophetic?  We'll just have to wait and see if Axl ever wakes up from his self-imposed coma.  It's his last chance ride.

What about that 14 Years song?

"Well it's been 14 years of silence... 14 years of pain... something something... years that we'll never have again."

Yeah, I'm para-phrasing :)  It's been awhile.  Please forgive me!

Um, that IS what he's saying, hence the term "prophetic"... And many of you here listen to the lyrics and have this literal interpretation of them and that's just wrong. sorry. i understand how music can have many meanings to many people, but when you are discussing the meaning to AXL (what HE meant when he wrote them), then you are incorrect.

And i agree about the fatalism, that is essentially what i am saying as well. It underscores nearly ALL his music, where the common themes of life continue to reappear, and THAT is what his songs are about. Sure, certain experiences inspire certain songs (like Get In The Ring), but the vast majority address the cyclical nature of life, not the day that Slash left the band.

Um, that IS what he's saying

Failure to communicate...

I was referring to Miz, the poster, not Axl, the rockstar.  I dont think Miz intended this discussion to be about Buckethead.   After all, the title of this thread has the word SELF in it, self meaning Axl of course.

I believe the 'prophetic' part comes from the current coma-like state of Axl's public existence.  But only Miz can clarify what he meant.

Well, Izzy also wrote "Double talkin' jive, get the album motherfucker, cuz I got no more patience." Maybe he foresaw Axl was going to have a hard time releasing CD?
